Thought I'd bring you all along with me for another drive through some of the burn area from the Alexander Mountain fire up here in Cedar Park in Drake. I also had the opportunity to help some neighbor friends clean up their yard a bit, they had the fire literally creep up to the edge of their house. Thankfully all they lost were a few cedar trees. Gave it a go with the little electric toy, then had to get the ol chainsaw up and running again. Day 5 of the Alexander Fire (7.2.24) .. Thought I'd press my luck this time and tried to interrogate a couple police officers manning the mandatory evacuation checkpoint leading into the main access road into the Alexander Fire area above Drake, CO. Afterwards I thought I'd do a little reading on the Colorado state laws (or ordinances) and how they stack up against the Supreme Law of the land, the US Constitution. Day 7 of the Alexander Fire (7.4.24) .. So we had to get our "papers" or credentials in order to return back home once the mandatory evacuations were reduced to voluntary, and FEMA finally declared there's no longer a state of emergency going on up here. So as usual, I had to voice my opinion. But all's well that ends well, we're back at home. Day 4 of the Alexander Fire (7.1.24) .. Took a little walk through the old burn scar area of the Cameron Peak fire we went through not too long ago. Red slurry still clings to many of the out buildings and even an old tire swing. So they mistakenly dropped some of the stuff in the St. Vrain river above Boulder while trying to fight to Quarry fire. Whoops, that could be bad. Ever wonder where slurry fire retardant comes from? Day 3 of the Alexander Fire (7.31.24) .. I take a drive back down to Drake to see what I can see, and wouldn't ya know it? Palisade Mountain is still burning! I talk to the police officer manning the checkpoint to the access road (Storm Mountain Rd) and he discourages me from hanging out too long, and definitely isn't up for the idea of letting me do any sightseeing. But somewhere along the drive down there I go over some of the response for our local authorities, and questions are already being raised of whether this was yet again a result of an arsonist. At least that's the first thing that came to my mind, when I heard we had not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 fires burning within a matter of days of one another. Including a few freak structure fires like the one up in Estes Park. Am I spotting a pattern or am I just paranoid? You decide! Let me know in the comments!!! Day 2 (Part 2) of the Alexander Fire (7.30.24) .. After much foot dragging throughout the day, I finally got my marching orders in the form of some big flames torching the top of Palisade Mountain! As much as I wanted to hold out there, and am now still regretting leaving with reports of under staffed firefighters and neighbors pitching in to save homes .. I reluctantly left. But not before capturing some more EPIC shots of the fire burning over Palisade! For all of those sending their prayers and wondering what became of us, we're camped out up above Glen Haven right now, still on mandatory evac but a safer distance from the fire. Day 2 of the Alexander Fire (7.30.24) .. After a nice clear cool night without smoke and minimal spot fires over the ridge, the smoke blew up again today. Firefighters were doing more door to door checks, and suggested I pack up and move out with the fire now reaching Cedar Cove only a mile away! So I guess it's time to take things a little more seriously .. I end up spending the rest of the day cooking breakfast, sipping on some iced chai, water the garden (not sure why) and eventually getting some of my essentials packed up in the car. So as of today there are multiple fires raging across the foothills from Loveland, to Lyons, to Golden .. Sure makes you wonder if these aren't intentional. Authorities say this, the largest of Colorado's current wildfires is under investigation. So stay tuned for part two when the fires finally crest the top of Palisade Mountain! So I decided to take out the new drone for a spin during all the mandatory evacuations up here near Storm Mountain in Drake. It was a crazy day filled with ups and downs, and a whirlwind of emotions. Even almost lost the drone at one point flying too far with a low battery! But we all made it through, allbeit we sleep in different beds, it's nothing but clear cool skies tonight. * One correction at 1:32 mark, the California wildfire or Park Fire is actually up to 370,000 acres! Just another day up here in the Colorado Rockies .. We were shook from our comfort bubble again this morning to a large plume of smoke just over the ridge. Shortly after the calls went out the from Larimer County Sheriff's Office warning us of Mandatory Evacuations. Last update, the slurry bombers are battling it out, and firefighters on the ground are trying to come up with a plan of attack. Starting a new series I'm calling the "Nightwatch Book Club", cute isn't it? Where we'll be going through some books I find not only thought provoking but empowering, something we can apply to our lives going forward in these insane times. I recently heard of this book during an interview with combat correspondant Michael Yon. And after reading through the first few chapters on my own, I was struck by much much the topics in this book run parallel with the psychological experiment we've all been put through over the past few years. So I thought I'd put it out there in an entertaining, thought provoking format. So here it is! This book was written by Joost A. M. Meerloo, M.D. Instructor in Psychiatry, Columbia University Lecturer in Social Psychology, New School for Social Research, Former Chief, Psychological Department, Netherlands Forces in 1956. This book consists of 18 chapters, and I'm planning on releasing a new chapter every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday night in the coming weeks. So I hope we can all get through it cover to cover by Thursday Sept 3rd! I know it's a long wait, but hopefully you'll follow along with me it's worth it! Here's a quick overview: The Rape of the Mind represents one of the earliest and most notable studies of social control, political conformity, and menticide. Dutch physician and psychoanalyst Joost Meerloo, one of six children, but the only one to escape the Holocaust, had experienced firsthand the myriad of thought-control tactics employed by totalitarian states when he wrote The Rape of the Mind in 1956. In these pages Meerloo undertakes a systematic analysis of methods for brainwashing and control, exploring such subjects as coercion, mass delusion, false trials, mental contagion, sematic fog, the use of fear, and other techniques for mass submission, among much else.
