Overview of model hot air engine build from castings

Very early Myrick engine circa 1903, no serial number.

Hot tube ignition, propane fueled, 3 hp

Flame licker vacuum engines pull a flame into a cylinder during the suction stroke. A slide valve plate on the front of the engine closes at BDC and the cooling flame creates a vacuum which pulls the piston towards the head. At about the halfway point in the return stroke, the slide valve opens allowing the remaining gasses to be expelled.

I was asked to get this model engine running for a friend. Had to make new pistons and replace all the wear points like the con rod bearings. It was made by a talented local model engine enthusiast many years ago.

Finished model made from raw castings. Flywheel size about 4”.

Sold as a kit or completed engine about 1906. Features make and break ignition from a piston-tripped mechanism. Running on propane. Also can be set up to run on gasoline with added fuel mixer.

One of the last engine designs to come out of the Myrick factory around 1918 before they merged with Luther Co. Features ball bearing crankshaft, hit and miss governing, Wico L magneto and propane fuel.

Looking for info on the maker…unknown at present. We believe this to be either an early auto or aero engine. Made around 1905 based on use of 1/2-12 fasteners. This is a three-port, two cycle engine where the piston skirt valves the charge going into the crankcase. The flywheel end of the crankshaft has a tapered section for the flywheel to mount. The flywheel is probably not correct as we have no clue what was originally on it or if it was a propeller as used on an airship or aero plane . May also be an early auto engine as evidenced by the mounts. Use of so much aluminum in the crankcase is unique for that time period.

Palmer model B marine engine adapted by factory for pump jack use. Early (circa 1908) ignitor marine engine on factory pump jack. Two cycle, low tension make and break ignition. Complete restoration including all bearings, rings and water jacket repair.

Made from a Brunner air compressor. Uses an unusual flip-flop cam mounted to the crankshaft which skips opening the exhaust valve every other revolution. Also has a cross head extension on top of the piston which is the thing which protrudes from the cylinder head. Hot tube ignition.

Duro pump engine made circa 1910-1920. Made my the Duro company of Dayton, OH, but many were rebadged by Stover. This is the later style with the larger base. Jump spark ignition…some were fitted with a Wico EK mag.

Made from rough casting set about 2014. Two inch bore by 2.5” stroke, hot tube ignition, propane fueled.

I started with the base, cylinder and water pump. ALL other parts made from castings I machined using patterns I made. Always a treat to run it..

Flywheel is about 4” diameter. Made from a Meyers casting set. All fasteners made from 303 stainless hex stock. Second run 12/2022.

Using BBQ coil to keep pilot flame burning. Also increased fuel pump bore.
