There’s a popular term out there #traumabonding, yet when it comes to violence against women, that is Not strong enough. #stockholmsyndrome is more appropriate.
There may be some difficult messages to hear; but basically, if you want to STAY out of what is more likely a life-threatening situation, you are going to need to first go through the Fog Of War, and then radically change your perspective if who you are and what value you place on your life.

HOW Can I Recover from Abuse, Trauma, Violence?
Sometimes stories help us understand concepts. Check out this video where I give a real-life example of how someone experienced uncovering and interrupting a belief attached to cigarette smoking, that related to childhood abuse and the need to feel safe.
This video is a dive into the fact that when it comes to Emotion (subconscious mind/deeply rooted beliefs) and Logic (conscious, executive functioning that you activate when you use willpower), EMOTION wins every time, eventually.
So, one answer to “How can I recover…” is, tap into the subconscious, emotions, and beliefs/perspectives. If you can interrupt and break those, and then harness emotion to the new belief that is healing; that can be extraordinarily effective.
I’ve experienced it, personally, with clients, as have many of my colleagues.
Willpower, logic and determination can take us far. Emotion and changing beliefs at the core can put you in a different stratosphere!

How Long Will it Take to Heal from Abuse?
First of all, everyone is beautifully unique. No two people are the same, nor do any two people have the same experience.
Women who have experienced childhood abuse, childhood sexual abuse and/or partner violence as adults, can have similar experiences and similar questions, however.
A common theme/question is: How LONG will it take to heal? And also…
-To stop feeling angry
-To start having better relationships
-To finally enjoy intimacy
-To stop feeling guilty or ashamed
-To stop being chronically victimized…
This may be a tough pill to swallow, and depending on where you are ‘at’ at this moment, feel like a bridge too far to cross.
The Simple Answer Is: It IS up to you!
That is the simple answer, not the easy answer.
There is no panacea, no one size fits all to recover from the many emotional, physical, mental and spiritual impacts that violence and abuse can have on us.
Yet, as an adult who desires to have a different experience in life – to feel more peace, calm, strength, health, intimacy….and the list goes on, you have a decision to make.
The decision is the first step.
The next is to open your mind to the possibility that your experience of life has everything to do with your perceptions and beliefs.
The blows the time clock wide open; and this can be a place where massively, rapid and lasting changes occur.

Unfortunately, those who experienced abuse as children bear the weight, anguish, confusion, and brunt of horrific acts. Yes, there can be affects into adulthood,
BUT, there are ways to heal and recover so that you can:
-Experience more self-love, confidence, and sense of who you are as a human being
-Have better relationships
-Enjoy intimacy
-Improve your mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health.

Master your Emotional State
What if you could Master your Emotional State? Good news: there are simple and quick ways you can train yourself to do this.
A combination of changing the Internal Words & Pictures we hold in our minds, plus changing our physiology can give you more mastery over your emotional state.
Why is it that two people can have entirely different experiences of the same external event?
It all has to do with the internal interpretation (words and pictures in our minds) + physiology.
Athletes and performers who are at the top of their game understand this and work with their perceptions and physiology.
Try this little experiment:
-Bring to mind a recent moderately stressful event you experienced
-Remember how you felt about it, what happened, and stay there for a moment.
Now STOP!
Immediately:
-Plant your feet firmly on the ground
-Stand up & stand tall
-Place your hands on your hips
-Pull your shoulders back and broaden your chest
-Raise your head and breathe deeply
-Adopt the “Superwoman” pose.
Now, turn your attention back to how you feel about that former stressful event. There is a 99.9% chance that your perspective has changed.
This is a small example of how you can start to dynamically, actively and intentionally change your emotional state.
The more you do this, the more you realize you are indeed in charge of your state. Once you start to KNOW this, all sorts of phenomenal healing, growth and change can take root.

Alternate Nostril Breathing (Anuloma Viloma) is one of my favourite yogic breathing techniques to regulate, relax and calm the nervous system.
This one is best done before bed; yet any time of day can give you a ‘feel good’ boost.
One thing I’ve noticed with clients, friends, family, myself (and all humans for that matter), is sometimes we can struggle to add in these little things in life that can make a great impact to our overall health – such as 5 minutes of alternate nostril breathing, 30 minutes of walk and/or getting up from the desk and computer frequently, taking the time to focus on just 1 thing instead of multitasking, and tearing ourselves away from our phones to connect with humans IRL.
Living in modern society can make it challenging enough to be well. Add into that, the residual impacts of childhood abuse or domestic violence.
We are all worthy of health, peace, connection and joy.

Physical Strength = Mental & Emotional Strength
The research is in and has been proven time and time again Exercise is one of the best remedies for depression and anxiety, physical movement and strength can help people heal.
Particularly for women who have experienced childhood trauma, SA, domestic abuse; working with the body can be a shortcut to healing the mind and emotions.
Think, for a moment how you feel emotionally when you’re momentarily debilitated by a cold. Now, ask yourself – doesn’t it make sense that when we feel stronger, healthier, more flexible, agile and energetic that that will have a knock on effect on our spirit?
I just had a conversation with the woman who founded Left, Write, Hook. Check them out – an amazing program integrating creative writing and boxing to help woman recover from CSA. They also worked through the university to study participants progress — very impressive.
‘The Body Keeps the Score’ Brain, Mind and Body in the Healing of Trauma written by Bessel Van Der Kolk, MD is perhaps the first and most robust wide-reaching book on this subject matter.
And, I will throw back to an article I write a couple of years ago about my direct experience using martial arts training as a healing method from a DV relationship.
They all go together and for people who have experienced abuse, violence, DV, CA, CSA in particular, paying attention to and nurturing and strengthening the body is essential!

Beliefs, Perception & Truth
There is a Truth and that is that your Perception of Life will impact your experience.
The way that that happens is through your beliefs.
Here’s the thing though: most of our beliefs were set at very young ages, when our ability to make sense of the world was forming.
This is one reason why people who experienced abuse as children, can struggle as adults. The beliefs they formed of themselves were misinformed. Children internalize abuse as the ability to comprehend the abuse of adults literally threatens their sense of survival. Thus the ‘blame’ is misplaced and all too common effects of Childhood Abuse include feelings of fear, anxiety, guilt, shame, low self-esteem, and the list goes on.
Fast forward into adulthood – if those core beliefs aren’t interrupted, extracted, and changed, life can be rife with challenges.
Take the example of a woman who was abused as a child, being in a relationship with a violent partner.
She very likely internalizes the blame, feels unworthy of more, and her subconscious is working against her in keeping her in a dynamic of what feels familiar. Not good, or healthy, but familiar.
Here are some Truths to consider:
-As an adult, your beliefs are yours to change
-Nothing from the past, can ever truly hurt your soul, who you are as a human and spiritual being.
-There ARE ways to change your perceptions and beliefs, thus change your entire experience of life.
I know this because I experienced this personally.
I know this because I’ve seen clients, friends and colleagues do this as well.
It does come down to a choice and taking steps to change your perceptions and beliefs.
I heard some truths at a time that I needed, and it radically changed the trajectory of my life. I hope that someone hears this who needs to and knows that it is possible.

Women’s Safety – Awareness, Avoidance & Distance
This is a follow-up to a story I posted regarding a violent assault against a woman in public in Calgary, Alberta. It is true that most violence and abuse against women and children takes place in the home or is committed by people they know.
However, it’s always good to remember basic safety and self defense strategies. Stay safe out there and remember to be aware of your surroundings and do your best to avoid and put distance in between you and anyone you feel threatened by – in public, and at home!
