Protesters were seen holding both Palestinian flags and signs, while counter-protestors held Israeli flags and Israeli-American Council signs. A post from UNLV’s Student For Justice in Palestine, which organized the rally, states, “We DEMAND that our university DISCLOSES and DIVESTS!” Counter-protesters could be seen holding signs, saying, “Israel = Peace, Hamas = Violence,” and “Educate, Don’t Indoctrinate!” Similar protests continue to pop up across the country, including tent encampments of protesters calling on universities to stop doing business with Israel or companies that support the war in Gaza. The ensuing police crackdowns echoed actions decades ago against a much larger protest movement protesting the Vietnam War. There have been confrontations with law enforcement and more than 1,000 arrests. In rare instances, university officials and protest leaders struck agreements to restrict the disruption to campus life and upcoming commencement ceremonies.

The Las Vegas groundbreaking ceremony of Brightline West is happening Monday morning, April 22. FOX5 confirmed with a Brightline representative that Secretary Pete Buttigieg will make remarks celebrating the groundbreaking. Brightline founder and chairman Wes Edens and federal, state, and local officials from California and Nevada also plan to be at the event.The ceremony will be held at the future Brightline West station site for the high-speed rail connecting Southern California and Nevada. The station is set to be located near Warm Springs and Las Vegas Boulevard. Officials say there will be a stop in Victorville with a final stop in Rancho Cucamonga. Its estimated completion date is the summer of 2028.

A pickaxe wielding man was arrested early Sunday morning after a reported fight led to a barricade situation in North Las Vegas, police said. 51-year old Efrain Chavarin faces charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and obstructing an investigation. Officers responded to reports of a physical altercation between neighbors at the 1100 block of Stone River Dr. near Civic Center Dr. around 10 p.m. on Saturday. During the incident, one of the neighbors armed themselves with a pickaxe, according to the North Las Vegas Police Department (NLVPD). When responders arrived, the man armed with the pickaxe went back inside his residence and refused to come outside and speak with officers. Police said due to the prior physical altercation, the man arming themselves with a pickaxe, and now refusing to coming come outside; the NLVPD Detective Bureau and SWAT team responded to the scene. The man eventually came outside of their residence and was taken into custody by NLVPD around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 21.

One person was arrested on Saturday after waving a firearm at multiple vehicles in the northwest Las Vegas valley, police said. Officers responded to the area of Sahara and I-15 around 12 p.m. after reports of a vehicle seen brandishing a firearm at multiple other vehicles in various locations. Police said the vehicle failed to stop and engaged in a short chase. The 'pursuit intervention tactic' immobilized the vehicle to stop it from driving further. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police took the suspect into custody.

Las Vegas police are investigating a crash that killed at least two people in the east valley on Wednesday night. According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the crash happened on Boulder Highway, south of Dalhart Street around 7:37 p.m. Police determined that a 2014 KIA Rio was traveling northbound on Boulder Highway at a high speed, while several pedestrians were waiting for a bus at a nearby RTC shelter. The crash occurred when the KIA left the roadway and struck several fixed objects that it carried into the shelter, striking several pedestrians and projecting them onto the roadway. Three pedestrians were transported to UMC Trauma Center by ambulance for injuries they sustained from the crash. One sustained life-threatening injuries, and the other two sustained serious injuries. Two additional pedestrians – identified as a 42-year-old man and a 14-year-old teen – were pronounced dead at the scene.The driver of the KIA – identified as 64-year-old Cynthia Phelps – displayed signs of impairment following the crash, and was taken into custody on DUI-related charges. Police say she was also treated for minor injuries. “The pedestrian deaths marked the 49th and 50th traffic-related fatalities in the LVMPD’s jurisdiction for 2024,” LVMPD noted in a release. “This case remains under investigation by the LVMPD’s Collision Investigation Section.”

The suspect in a mutli-day barricade in Henderson was ultimately found dead, according to Henderson Police. The barricade began Friday afternoon in a residence in the 200 block of Callen Falls Avenue, near Galleria and Water Street. On Saturday afternoon, HPD advised that the barricade was still ongoing, in a video posted to social media. HPD Sgt. Daniel Medrano said officers were involved in a shooting at about 8:45 a.m. Saturday morning with the suspect; however, no officers or the suspect were hurt.On Sunday morning, HPD said the suspect was located deceased and police were reopening roads in the area. “I feel like they’re doing the best they can right now because of what this individual has, long-range rifles, and they don’t want to see him use them to hurt anybody or kill anybody who is innocent here,” said a neighbor Saturday. The Red Cross of Southern Nevada was also assisting 20 residents displaced from six units in the complex that sustained damage during the police response. Police said they would release more information on the barricade in the coming days.

A woman attempting to move her broken-down car on a northwest Las Vegas road was struck and killed by another vehicle, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police. The collision was reported around 6:47 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Ann Road and Tropic Mist Street, just east of Jones Boulevard, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said in a statement. Investigators believe a white Kia Soul was disabled on the westbound side, and a woman was trying to move the car when a group stopped to help her. At some point, a 2012 Hyundai Veloster heading west on Ann crashed into the rear of the Kia and then the woman, running her over. Police say the woman, a 58-year-old Henderson resident, died at the scene. The driver of the Hyundai, identified as 29-year-old Cody Hill, showed signs of impairment, according to LVMPD. He failed field sobriety tests and was taken into custody. Jail records indicate Hill is facing a charge of DUI resulting in death, a felony, along with two misdemeanor counts. His first court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

The Clark County School District said in an email that its police department is "looking into rumors and the school was placed on lockdown out of an abundance of caution. A Las Vegas patrol vehicle was involved in a three-vehicle crash on Monday night that left two people injured. According to a report from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded to a report of a crash near the intersection of Desert Inn and Paradise just before 8 p.m. Police said that a marked patrol vehicle was heading north on Paradise when a white sedan failed to yield to a traffic control device, striking the patrol vehicle.
