The Carteret County Amateur Radio Society participated in the April 2023 County Emergency Services hurricane drill. The mission of our field volunteers was to provide the county EOC with real-time information concerning conditions at transmitting stations across the county. The amateur radio clubs drill consisted of three separate emergency nets. The first net, designated remote volunteers provided the EOC with Field Status Reports and practiced use of the WebEOC and the operability of the WinLink system, the second net invited all amateurs in the area to participate in the drill by providing Field Situation Reports to net control via our local repeater from their field station or QTH. The third net was a simulation of a local repeater-down scenario where volunteers communicated via simplex and relayed traffic from weaker stations to net control.

ARRL Field Day ARRL Field Day is the most popular on-the-air event held annually in the US and Canada. Carteret County Amateur Radio Society held their 2022 Filed Day at the town park in Newport, NC.

All the nice chess boards I could find were expensive. So I made mine from oak and maple.

The J-37 Morse key ... During WWII, the Korean War, and even into the Vietnam era the U. S. Signal Corps designated many of their Morse keys with a "J-" and a number. The real workhorse key during those years was the J-37 "Mae West" key. There are many more glamorous wartime keys around, but the keys that carried the bulk of the action were the J-37 keys. The J-37 key is unusual because, with the addition of different bases and connections, it became part of other more special purpose keys. I found this one at a yard sale for ten bucks.

I was looking for a convenient antenna that I could throw in my GoBox. The solution I came up with was a easy-to-stow, roll-up J-Pole I made from 450 Ohm ladder line. It rolls up conveniently and can be stored in my GoBox and deploys easily by throwing a small rope over a tree limb and hoisting it up as high as possible.

All the nice Morse keys I could find were expensive. I built mine out of brass stock from McMaster Carr and red oak for a base.

I found a cool calabash gourd pipe in a local antique shop for only $40 but I didn't have a way to store or display it without lying it on its side. So I made my calabash pipe stand from red oak.
