नीलगाय एक बड़ा और शक्तिशाली जानवर है। कद में नर नीलगाय घोड़े जितना होता है, पर उसके शरीर की बनावट घोड़े के समान सन्तुलित नहीं होती। पृष्ठ भाग अग्रभाग से कम ऊँचा होने से दौड़ते समय यह अत्यंत अटपटा लगता है। अन्य मृगों की तेज चाल भी उसे प्राप्त नहीं है। इसलिए वह बाघ, तेन्दुए और सोनकुत्तों का आसानी से शिकार हो जाता है, यद्यपि एक बड़े नर को मारना बाघ के लिए भी आसान नहीं होता। छौनों को लकड़बग्घे और गीदड़ उठा ले जाते हैं। परन्तु कई बार उसके रहने के खुले, शुष्क प्रदेशों में उसे किसी भी परभक्षी से डरना नहीं पड़ता क्योंकि वह बिना पानी पिए बहुत दिनों तक रह सकता है, जबकि परभक्षी जीवों को रोज पानी पीना पड़ता है। इसलिए परभक्षी ऐसे शुष्क प्रदेशों में कम ही जाते हैं।
