Should the U.S. Military Intervene in Taiwan? A Soho Forum Debate
Should the United States use military force to deter China from invading Taiwan?
That was the subject of this month's Soho Forum debate, which took place in front of a full house at the Sheen Center in downtown Manhattan.
William Galston, a senior fellow at the nonprofit Brookings Institution and a former policy adviser to President Bill Clinton, defended the resolution. He argued that the U.S. should use all the tools at its disposal to deter foreign powers from engaging in conflict with their neighbors, with the ultimate goal of preventing an outright war such as the one we are witnessing in Europe.
Peter Van Buren, who spent 24 years working as a diplomat for the U.S. State Department, took the negative. He argued that Americans rarely have the context or understanding to intervene productively in foreign conflicts, and that more often than not, what looks like deterrence to one party looks like provocation to the other. Invoking the many years of experience he gained as a State Department diplomat stationed in Asia, he stated confidently that there would be no invasion of Taiwan by China either soon or in the distant future.
The debate was moderated by Soho Forum director Gene Epstein.

Ukrainian soldier bodycam shows rocket launcher taking out Russian tank
DRAMATIC bodycam footage shows the moment a Ukrainian soldier takes outa Russian armoured tank using a handheld rocket launcher in Mariupol.
The Ukrainian troops, from the notorious Azov Battalion, have been forced back to a sprawling steel plant with a network of subterranean tunnels where soldiers and civilians have been taking shelter under a relentless barrage from Russian forces.
The video shows a soldier holding what appears to be a Javelin-style anti-tank missile launcher and firing a rocket at a Russian armoured vehicle that lands a direct hit. The soldier then quickly ducks back inside a building to safety and can be heard saying "Yes!" as the footage ends.
Russia claims to have overtaken most of the city with only the last group of defenders located at the sprawling Azovstal steel plant.
The city of Mariupol has been besieged since the beginning of the Russian invasion, on 24th February. It is regarded as key to the Russian invasion plan because its capture will contribute to providing Russia with a land bridge from its borders to occupied Crimea.

The Myth of Cuban Health Care #doctor #medicine #cuba # truth
Reason is the planet's leading source of news, politics, and culture from a libertarian perspective. Go to reason.com for a point of view you won't get from legacy media and old left-right opinion magazines.
----------------
"If there's one thing they do right in Cuba, it's health care," said Michael Moore in a 2007 interview. "Cuba has the best health care system in the entire area," according to Angela Davis, "and in many respects much better than the U.S."
"One thing that's well established in the global health community is the strength of the Cuban national health system," said Clare Wenham, a professor at the London School of Economics.
Claims like these have appeared in hundreds of documentaries, newspaper articles, and magazine features over the years celebrating the supposed marvel of Cuba's health care system. It's a testament to the effectiveness of the Castro regime's propaganda apparatus that this myth, so deeply at odds with reality, has persisted for so long.
"The Cuban health care system is destroyed," Rotceh Rios Molina, a Cuban doctor who escaped the country's medical mission while stationed in Mexico, tells Reason in Spanish. "The doctor's offices are in very bad shape."
"People are dying in the hallways," says José Angel Sánchez, another Cuban doctor who defected from the medical mission in Venezuela, tells Reason in Spanish.
According to Rios, Sánchez, and others with firsthand experience practicing medicine in Cuba, the island nation's health care system is a catastrophe. It's exactly what you'd expect in a country impoverished by communism.
In the 15 years since the release of Michael Moore's 'Sicko,' which celebrated Cuban health care, everyday citizens have been armed with smartphones and social media, empowering them to tell the truth about what it's really like in Cuban hospitals.
So how did the Castro regime's propaganda machine manage to fool so many for so long? According to Maria Werlau, executive director of the Cuba Archive, the answer lies with Cuba's foreign medical missions, which are teams of health care professionals dispatched to provide emergency and routine care to foreign countries.
Rios participated in the medical mission in Sierra Leone in 2013, where health care specialists from around the world came to help contain the Ebola epidemic. The members of the mission were told that when they returned to Cuba, they would be received as heroes. Rios says that, while he did receive a stipend that went to cover his living expenses, medical personnel from other countries were generously compensated.
In a 2020 report, Human Rights Watch said the Cuban medical missions "violate [doctors'] fundamental rights," including "the right to privacy, freedom of expression and association, liberty, and movement, among others." It noted that "many doctors feel pressured to participate in the missions and fear retaliation if they do not..."
After the mission in Sierra Leone, Rios was redeployed to a military base in Mexico. One day, he was sent with a group of doctors to buy some phone cards so they could connect with their relatives back home. He decided to make his escape. Rios found a job at a Mexican pharmacy and started saving money to pay a coyote to bring him into the U.S. He was picked up by border officials, and taken to an immigrant detention center for 42 days. After his release, he could join his family in Miami.
The medical missions are primarily a way of selling Cuban health care services abroad. So what's health care like for those living on the island?
Julio Cesar Alfonso is the president of the Miami-based Solidarity Without Borders, which helps Cuban doctors who have escaped. He says that there are two health care systems in Cuba—one that is used by the majority of regular citizens, and another that is reserved for tourists and the Cuban elite.
Sánchez thinks that, as the Castros' health care myth crumbles, ordinary Cubans are beginning to realize that they are not threatened by foreign enemies, as the regime propaganda machine has claimed for decades.
"The only enemy of the Cuban people," he says, "is the Cuban government."

Elon Musk LAUNCHED The World’s FIRST-EVER Reactor Powered By AI!
Elon Musk LAUNCHED The World’s FIRST-EVER Reactor Powered By AI!
A major, eye-brow-raising breakthrough in science! Nuclear fusion, which used to be quite an unachievable project for years, has become possible. All thanks to the genius entrepreneur, Elon Musk! He disclosed an unprecedented reactor powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to carry out the fusion successfully. But how would this science fiction happen in real-life? What’s the secret?
If you're a musk fan and don't want to miss anything about this incredible person, then smack the subscribe button and hit the bell icon so that you will be notified whenever a new video is uploaded. In today’s video, we are going to talk about the first nuclear fusion reactor powered by AI, which is revealed by none other than multi-billionaire genius Elon Musk.
The interior of a Tokamak nuclear reactor, a doughnut-shaped tank meant to confine a nuclear fusion event, is filled with a unique form of pandemonium. Finding smart ways to control and confine that plasma will be key to unlocking the potential of nuclear fusion, which has been mooted as the clean energy source of the future for decades, noted Elon Musk. Hydrogen atoms are smashed together at unfathomably high temperatures, creating a whirling, enrolling plasma that is hotter than the surface of the sun.
The science behind fusion appears to be sound at this time. So there's still a technical problem to solve. We need to be able to heat and hold this substance together long enough to extract energy from it. That's where Elon Musk kicks in the picture.
He's been working on a cooperative research effort with the Swiss Plasma Center to create artificial intelligence (AI) for directing nuclear fusion reactions in stars that are also driven by fusion.
Fusion reactions occur when the nuclear force drawing two or more atomic nuclei together overcomes the electrostatic force pushing them apart, fusing them into heavier nuclei. The process is endothermic for nuclei heavier than iron-56, necessitating an energy input. The heavier nuclei, which have many more protons than iron, have a stronger repulsive force. The process is exothermic for nuclei lighter than iron-56, releasing energy when they fuse.
Because hydrogen has just one proton in its nucleus, it needs the least amount of work to fuse and produces the highest net energy. According to Musk, “Hydrogen is also the easiest fuel to fully ionize because it only contains one electron. The strong force works only over short distances, up to one femtometre, or one proton or neutron's diameter, but the repulsive electrostatic force between nuclei acts over greater distances”.
The fuel atoms must be supplied with enough kinetic energy to approach each other closely enough for the strong force to overcome the electrostatic repulsion to initiate fusion. The "Coulomb barrier" is the amount of kinetic energy required to get the fuel atoms close enough together.
This energy may be obtained by either speeding up atoms in a particle accelerator or heating them to extremely high temperatures.
The electrons in an atom are taken away when it is heated over its ionization energy, leaving just the nucleus. Ionization is the name for this process, and an ion is a nucleus that results. As Musk explained, Plasma is a heated cloud of ions and free electrons that were previously bound to them. Plasmas are electrically conductive and magnetically tunable because the charges are separated. This is used in many fusion devices to confine the particles while they are heated.
The mere gravitational mass of hydrogen atoms is enough to bind them together. And they triumph against their foes.

Elon Musk Just REVEALED Russia’s Most POWERFUL WEAPON!
During Russia's invasion of Ukraine, billionaire Elon Musk has done everything he can to assist the country. During the situation in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the activation of Russia's nuclear deterrent forces. Elon Musk expresses his strong opposition to Russia's use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine revealing its nuclear nukes. Wanna know more? Let's find out.
Hey guys! Welcome back to our channel Elon Musk Evolution where we tell you all the latest news about Elon Musk and his multi-billion companies. In today’s video we are going to tell you about how Elon Musk revealed Russia's most powerful nuclear weapons.
But before we get started, make sure you subscribe to our channel and hit the bell icon so you don't miss any of our incredible videos.
Tesla's CEO is keeping an eye on Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which has been universally condemned. According to both his critics and supporters, Elon Musk is not your normal CEO. The former regard him as irrational, criticize him for being uncontrollable, and are concerned about his unpredictable conduct. The latter, on the other hand, praises the fact that he is never where you expect him to be. More than a week after Russia's invasion of Ukraine began, the billionaire has proven that he is a CEO in his own right, one who does not compete on the same level as his peers.
After starting military attacks against Ukraine, Vladimir Putin ordered the Russian nuclear forces to be placed on high alert on February 27, 2022.Elon Musk strongly opposed Russia using nuclear weapons against Ukraine and says that Russia will have to face the consequences of its action and it will lead to disastrous conclusion on both sides. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian ambassador to the United States alleged last week that Russia employed illegal weapons such vacuum or thermobaric bombs.
Putin on the other hand remarked,"Senior officials of leading NATO countries make aggressive statements against our country,""Therefore, I order the Minister of Defense and the chief of the General Staff to place the containment forces of the Russian Army in a special mode of combat duty."
Although it is unclear what "special mode of war duty" implies in practice, Elon Musk believes it is a clear provocation to the West. It could also be a symptom of Putin's dissatisfaction with the fact that, four days into the invasion of Ukraine, his forces have yet to conquer any city and have suffered substantial casualties, according to him.
Tobias Ellwood, head of the Commons Defense Committee, stated that if Putin's forces failed to make a breakthrough in Ukraine, he may employ low-yield tactical nuclear weapons in the "worst-case scenario."
Mr Ellwood stated that Western allies must now consider how they would respond if the Russians used unconventional troops.
“He could certainly use other weapons systems which haven’t been really tested or that we aren’t really used to,” he added. Chemical weapons, as well as low-yield tactical nuclear weapons, would constitute the worst-case scenario. Musk says that we need to think about what we would do if we were in that situation.
Putin's threat should be taken seriously, according to Pavel Podvig , a top expert on Russia's nuclear deterrence.
