Aurora Borealis-The Universe album -Jordan McClung (New Age Music)
Where does the Aurora Borealis come from? It starts at our Sun. The energy from our sun converts hydrogen to helium. This light and energy comes from the core of the Sun called convection cells causing magnetic fields. This energy pushes up to exit from its surface slowing down the eddies of hot gas, causing the surface to cool causing sun spots. The electrical charged gas is called plasma, which stretches like a rubber band and breaks causing billions of tons of plasma are expelled from the sun called a solar storm. The solar storms (also known as solar winds) can reach 4 million miles per hour traveling through space.
It takes around 6 hours to blast past Mercury, and about 12 hours by Venus. And about 18 hours to reach Earth. The Earth has a magnetic field that is coupled together that deflects the solar storm. This causes the gas like stream to come down on the day side of north and south poles stretching down over the night side of the poles like a rubber band. The rubber band breaks causing the gases to travel up the magnetic lines towards the poles on the night side. This generates the light on the gases that we see as the Aurora Borealis.
When composing this music, I wanted to convey a kind of electrical sound or energy with a little bit of a victory written into it. The Earth has a great beauty and without this magnetic field the Earth would look a lot like the planet Mercury. What a great way of protecting itself with this marvelous shield. I hope to you may hear that in this short but powerful piece.

Jupiter-The Universe album -Jordan McClung (New Age Music)
Jupiter is fifth and largest of the planets it is known as the Roman King of the gods. Not only is it the biggest of the planets in our solar system, it has enough room to fit all the planets in our solar system and have room to spare. The Earth can comfortably fit in well known storm as the Big Red Spot. The vastness of the Jupiter can also fit about 1,300 Earths comfortably. Jupiter is 485 million miles from the Sun and mostly made of gases; about 86 percent hydrogen and 13 percent helium and has no surface area. It spins so fast that it bulges at the equator. A day on Jupiter is less than 10 hours (9.9) and takes about 12 years to orbit the Sun. With its enormous magnetosphere giving it a huge gravitational pull, it is a like a small solar system in itself pulling any or everything that enters its realm.
There are at least 69 Moons and all are extremely different with their substance such as ‘Io’ (pronounced eye-oh) being close most actively volcanic, Europa looks like it is cracked like an egg shell covered with ice, Callisto being filed with craters from many years of bombardment and Ganymede at -240 degrees and more than 40 miles thick on its crust Ganymede is the biggest moon in the solar system, all being very distinctive. There are also small rings that orbit the planet, not very visible as other planets. There are even Aurora’s around the poles.
There are storms on Jupiter and enormous pressure. The temperatures on the mantle level are about 18,000 degrees Fahrenheit. And the further you go toward the center it becomes a seething level of metallic hydrogen which makes up a lot of its magnetic field. Without Jupiter the Earth and surrounding planets may cease to exist. Because of its great magnetic field it is considered as the solar systems vacuum cleaner. It will take comets and space debris and either sling shots it out of the way or it devours that object in its path. July 1994 the comet Shoemaker Levy 9 came too close and impacted into Jupiter.
This piece was written for its monstrous and powerful size and vastness. There are a number of orchestra instruments and various instruments added to give it the richness and depth. The intent was to describe an aggressive massive high energy and somewhat unpredictable power that Jupiter would portray with a majestic presence of supremacy as being the King of the planets.

Saturn-The Universe album -Jordan McClung (New Age Music)
Saturn is named after the god Saturnus, the god of agriculture and harvest. It is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second largest is the most photogenic planet in the solar system. It is about 890 million miles from the Sun and takes about 29 years to make one orbit. It is made up of 75 percent Hydrogen and 25 percent Helium. It is about 74,900 miles in diameter and can fit about 765 Earths. Unlike Jupiter it is so buoyant if there were enough water it would float. Like Jupiter it has no solid surface. We do not really know the rotation of a day, the cloud tops rotate about 11 hours. There are 8 rings and are lettered from A-G and span from tip to tip about 200,000 miles across and are very thin about as thick as a 1 or 2 story building and like looking at a sheet of paper in comparison.
There are at least 82 moons, Titan being its largest moon is bigger than Mercury and Pluto. The Cassini/Huygens spacecraft took 7 years to reach Saturn. The Huygens probe was sent to Titan and discovered it has an atmosphere and solid ground similar to Earth. With Saturn’s other unique moons like Enceladus being only 300 miles across water and water ice geyser vapors shooting out from its surface forming the E ring. Others like Mimas which looks like a familiar Death Star, Iapetus and many others with their shapes and sizes.
This piece was written for its serene and beautiful settings. Saturn being the second biggest planet, I wanted to allow a more majestic and richer quality with lower orchestral and other various instruments without competing with Jupiter which is without comparison.

Gravity-The Universe album -Jordan McClung (New Age Music)
Of course most of us know in 1687, English mathematician Sir Isaac Newton made this discovery. This however is another important part of the universe while trying to not go into a lot of technical detail. In a short description, it is a natural thing in which mass is brought together, in other words a way in which objects from the tiniest atom or element are brought together. They are drawn to each other like a magnet.
I wanted to mention this piece being one of the most common and important parts in a brief description to the universe. Musically this can be quite a challenge, and the idea here is mostly to convey a type of story than an actual or literal description. I would hope that the music may have a way in which the listener may be drawn toward it.

Random Fire - In Motion album - Jordan McClung (New Age Music)
Random Fire by Jordan McClung (New Age Music) There is always a situation where there is something that needs to be done concerning those trying to destroy our well being. SAM's or a Surface to Air Missile detect and follow heat or radar signatures that will lock on to what is and will continue until it reaches it's target. This was a tricky being limited with footage, was fun project. From the award-winning music album 'In Motion'... it's really about the music... enjoy!

Spring Flow- Solace album -Jordan McClung (New Age Music)
Have you ever gone out for a walk through the forest or a nice pathway with lovely scenery with something captivating? There are a number of things that would make one feel uplifted by the feel of a natural location.
With water bubbling and flowing from a spring down the hill to the lake below. There are great sounds in nature, but nothing like a 'Spring Flow'.

The Moon-The Universe album -Jordan McClung (New Age Music)
We look outside on a clear night and what may look like a spotlight in the sky is the moon. It is a close companion to the Earth, also known by the Romans as Luna. The Moon is a quarter of the size of the earth. It has also been known as a double planet because of its size. The Moon is 234,000 miles from the Earth and it takes 3 days to get there. The diameter of the Moon is 2,160 miles and a day length is 27.3 Earth days. This is because one side of the Moon permanently faces the earth. For example like a tether ball tied with rope from a pole at the center.
The Moon has no atmosphere and no air making the sky is always black. Because there is no atmosphere there are constant meteor impacts that leave craters as big as 700 miles across. The gravity is 1.6 of earth’s making you lighter to move across the surface with a bounce in your step. If you were to stand on the moon the temperatures are extreme at 270 degree during the day and -240 degrees Fahrenheit at night. The moon causes the rise and fall of the oceans tides. This is caused by the moons gravity pull, which also keeps the orbit of the Earth balanced for its seasons as it goes around the sun.
On July 20th 1969 on the Apollo 11 mission Man for the first time set foot on our cosmic neighbor the moon on the spot known as the Sea of Tranquility. Unfortunately the quote of astronaut Neil Armstrong’s statement has been revised and misquoted saying that there was a dropout in the transmission leaving out the letter “a”. This changes the meaning of the astronaut’s original statement. The original recording is clear. There is no error in the transmission. The original historic quote is “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” The astronauts had brought back 48 pounds of Moon rock and dust. Without the Moon the Earth would not stay in balance as it needs to be. The lunar soil is made up of 30 to 60 percent glass which is one of the reasons why the moon reflects a lot of light and is so brilliant in the sky at night.
When writing this piece I wanted to portray musically something distant and yet majestic being an icon that goes hand in hand with the Earth. When looking at it up in the sky, it has yet a romantic side to it and has been a beacon to many over the course of time. It has a cosmic and an orchestral feeling of taking you on a journey to the Moon.

Quasar- The Universe album (What is a Quasar?) - Jordan McClung (New Age Music)
What is a Quasar? They are a super massive black hole. It is a super solar system sized galaxy with high points of energy that are contained inside them. When black holes gather more and more materiel, they get very very bright and the brightness qualifies them as a Quasar.
Quasars were discovered by radio telescopes that found what they saw as blobs in their view called an occultation. Which means it is an object that is hidden by another object and passes between the observers. This was the brightest of the blobs that were discovered called Object Number 273 in the Brand New 3rd Cambridge Radio Catalog or 3C273 for short. Two galaxies merge and grow when driving gas into the galactic core. There are two types of Quasars, one is called the Red Quasar (that is in the image) That has a lot of collects material around it. It also absorbs UV light and dust. The Blue Quasar has no dust in the center of the disk and it out shines the host galaxy.
The gases descend into the gravitational well and increase in speed and swept up into a massive whirlpool around the well of the black hole which is called an Accretion Disk where the energy of motion is turned into heat. The heat of the disks glow so bright, that we can see Quasars at great distances. Some of the gases are swallowed causing the black hole to grow. This energy can be pooled in the center causing the energy to shoot out from the poles of the Quasar. Of course this can become more technical and scientific. There is still much to be discovered about these massive Quasar phenomenon, they are not too common in our local universe but have proven to be the most powerful energy yet discovered. There is still much more on these theories to be discovered.
When composing this piece, I wanted to display a sense of mass and cosmic power because of the size and complexity of this huge phenomenon. I wanted to give it structure of moving a huge spinning mass in a cosmic and yet majestic way.

Atmosphere-The Universe album (Mars Rover Landing) -Jordan McClung (New Age Music)
All the planets have a different type of atmosphere around each planet or space object. Organizations like NASA/JPL and other organizations have been trying have made many attempts in getting to the surface of Mars because the atmosphere is not quite dense enough to be an atmosphere and yet too thin to slow down an object or spacecraft properly.
For a spacecraft to get to Mars it takes about 8.5 to 9 months to arrive from the Earth. There is a two year window that is a race is to get everything ready for the launch due to a slower and elliptical orbit of Mars. Even traveling at the speed of light, in order for the radio signal from ground control to get to the spacecraft is about 7 minutes. Ground control would describe this as the ‘7Minutes of Terror’ meaning the spacecraft had to at one point take over and go through a landing sequence by itself with no help from the ground. Therefore there was a waiting period not knowing if the spacecraft arrived or malfunctioned and crashed on the surface of Mars.
Even though there have been many failed attempts, there have been other spacecraft that have arrived safely such as the Viking missions in the 1970’s. Other missions followed such as Pathfinder in 1997 being the first robot rover then Spirit and Opportunity in 2004. There have been other missions that followed like the Phoenix Mars Lander in 2008 to study the poles for water and ice. Later the spacecraft and rover science laboratory Curiosity arrived in 2012 and has been active on its surface for many years. Other missions are scheduled to follow.
This piece was particularly written for this getting to the planet Mars and the challenge of getting to the Martian surface. There is a short animation available describing how the spacecraft traveled and arrived to the Red planet. I have written the music as timely process of traveling through space with an intense arrival to co-inside along with this short animation piece.

Earth-The Universe album-Jordan McClung (New Age Music)
What more do you need to know when you walk outside to take a breath of fresh air? The Earth does however have a solid core of iron a nickel and a molten outer core, and of course a mantle to which we reside. Water covers about 70 percent of the globe with the air one-fifth oxygen and four-fifths nitrogen.
The Earth has of course a 24 hour day spinning on its axis with a 23 degree angle or day and night would be always the same. Also with this axis when moving around the sun this allows us a variation for the seasons and temperature. A year is 365 days with the 23 degree axis there is a slight variance a throughout the year the change is greatest especially over the period of 6 months. With this axis, the equator and poles with rising hot and cold air which gives us weather and temperature changes. With the Earth’s rotation the air is forced to move east and west
In composing for this piece, I wanted to portray the Earth as a beautiful wondrous place in which it is. It has a rich orchestral sound of the many treasures that the earth offers in its own light. In spite of some of the more serious and harsher climates and the atmospheres of the other planets, I wanted to bring to you some of the pleasantness of the Earth to this listening experience.
