Liars, Gaslighters and Manipulators - Irreverend Episode 116
Church of England revs but not as you know them Jamie Franklin and Thomas Pelham crack into the big stories of the week: Matt Hancock's WhatsApp messages reveal that they weren't following "the science" after all but were lying and self-aggrandising all along (we did mention something about something about this some time ago), the "Fat Sex Therapist" suggests that sexual predators such as Bill Cosby could be served by a "sex positive" attitude to consensual date rape, a drag night in St James' Piccadilly, and, in our email of the week, a riposte to the pro-Russian email from last week's episode, arguing against Russia and in favour of Ukraine's cause in the ongoing war. That and much much more as always in this week's episode!

- The Nashville school massacre of Christians and the "Trans Day of Vengeance"
- The weak response of the UK criminal justice system to grooming gangs and the lack of help for victims.
- The Archbishop of Canterbury's message of support for Ramadan and Manchester Cathedral's hosting of an Iftar meal.
- Rogue clergy in the Church of England set up a rival deanery chapter to distance themselves from mainstream CofE over the latter's endorsement of gay relationships.

The Book of Vision with Robin Monotti Graziadei
For this special episode the Rev'd Dr Jamie Franklin was joined by Robin Monotti Graziadei, the producer of the new film 'The Book of Vision' starring Charles Dance and Lotte Verbeek, directed by Carlo Hinterman and executively produced by Terrence Malick.
The Book of Vision is about healing, medicine and the human soul. It tells the story of a real Prussian doctor from the eighteenth century whose approach was medicine was one of listening and developing a human connection with his patients. This approach is contrasted with the emerging modern idea of human beings as machines that simply need to be tinkered with in order to produce health.
Robin and Jamie talked about the relevance of the film's themes to the response to Covid-19 and what that response revealed about society's understanding of healing, health and medicine. They also spoke about the importance of a holistic approach to health that involves not only preventing ourselves from becoming ill but cultivating and nourishing our souls as well as our bodies.

Inclusive Language for Vicars - Irreverend Episode 118
Church of England revs Jamie Franklin and Daniel French get together to put things to rights, talking all the big themes of the week. This time:
- We ask "Is Daniel as inclusive as the Oxfam Inclusive Language guide?" (Spoiler: he's definitely not)
- MP Ben Bradshaw attempts a parliamentary takeover of the Church of England by forcing a change in the doctrine of marriage through political means.
- German Roman Catholic bishops go rogue and announce full gay marriage come what may from the Vatican.
- In other Vatican news, the universalistic Abrahamic Family House has now opened in the UAE. Fully endorsed by Pope Francis who apparently signed a document saying that the existence of other religions is an expression of the will of God.
- Dutch farmers trash WEF stooge Mark Rutte in shock election result.
- Christian lecturer sacked by Methodist theological college for "homosexuality is invading the church" tweet.
- Email of the Week which details persecution of Ukrainian Orthodox Church by Ukrainian government.
And, after Daniel had to go, Jamie goes on a lengthy peroration about the importance of taking responsibility for your actions, inspired by his take on the manager of Tottenham Hotspur's behaviour this week.

Of Nazis and Narnians - Irreverend Episode 117
Controversy this week as terrorist watchdog puts CS Lewis children's classic on its far right white nationalist blacklist. Also on the blacklist is Suella Braverman, whom popular BBC sports presenter and covert socialist Gary Lineker compared to the Nazis. North of the border, the ostensibly Muslim candidate for leadership in the SNP Humza Yousaf wants to make it legal to terminate babies up until the point of birth.
Church of England reverends Tom and Jamie discuss all these stories, give you a brief update on what life as a young vicar is like, do some quickfire Question the Revs and much more. All in this week's episode of Irreverend: Faith and Current Affairs!

Buddha, Christ and Covid with Michael Hooey
Michael Hooey is a former Buddhist who reconverted to Christianity during the Covid-19 crisis. This was caused at least in part because of his disillusionment with the Buddhist community's flaccid capitulation to the madness that overtook society.
In this special episode, Church of England Rev Jamie Franklin discussed with Michael the appeal of Buddhist spirituality for people in the post-Christian secular West, points of similarity and difference from Christianity, Michael's experience of Buddhism during the Covid-19 crisis, the question of whether all faiths are equally valid and can lead to God, and why Christianity holds a more satisfying answer to the ultimate questions than Buddhism. Michael is a perceptive, intelligent and experienced commentator and this is an important conversation for anybody with an interest in world religions and Christianity.

Cold Facts and Empty Churches - Irreverend 105
Church of Englands revs Daniel French and Jamie Franklin sit down to discuss the key cultural theological issues. This week: the MET office usefully informs us to wear jumpers when we go outside because it is cold, Matt Hancocks quits the Commons to "communicate better with the public", the Church of England mission statistics show a shocking lack of bouncebackability as attendance numbers for 2021 show a decline of 30% (or about 250,00 people) from pre-Covid levels and we review the disturbing story coming out of Oxfordshire that residents are going to be divided up into "zones" and banned from using their cars to travel between zones for most of the year. Question the Rev this week sees some interesting queries about evolution and Christianity and whether there will be suffering and/or free will in heaven.
All of this, banter, laughs and much much more in the week's episode of Irreverened: Faith and Current Affairs!

Why Machines Will Never Rule the World - With Dr Jobst Landgrebe and Professor Barry Smith
Church of England vicar Jamie Franklin sits down with eminent thinkers Jobst Landgrebe and Barry Smith to discuss the pair's recent book 'Why Machines Will Never Rule the World'. Contrary to the bombastic predictions of Elon Musk and Klaus Shwab, there will never come a day when human beings create an artificial intelligence that is equal or superior to themselves. We can all relax on that front because such an endeavour is a mathematical impossibility. In this conversation, we explore Landgrebe and Smith's argument in detail whilst touching on the true nature of human intelligence, free will, the extent to which emotion has a physical basis, demonic possession, mankind's need for religion even in a secular context and the definition and implication of complex systems for viruses and climate change. Strap yourselves in because this one goes deep.

Church of England vicars Daniel French, Jamie Franklin and Thomas Pelham to talk about cancel culture as Australian Christian Andrew Thorburn has to resign as CEO of Essendon football club because of his church’s “unacceptable” views, and as British Catholic Caroline Farrow is arrested in front of her children whilst making Sunday lunch for writing offensive tweets. We also talk a little bit about the mini-budget from an economic and moral perspective and answer your questions in the Question the Rev, including one on whether or not the Bible says the earth is flat. That and much much more in this week's edition of Irreverend: Faith and Current Affairs!
Our scripture this week is taken from Matthew 5:43-48, "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you."
(Rev Jamie apologises that his microphone was turned up too loud this time. This mistake will not be repeated!)

Victimhood and Grievances - Irreverend Episode 108
Church of England vicars Tom Pelham and Jamie Franklin sit down to discuss the big stories of the week in both Church and State. This week: the Archbishop of Canterbury doubles down on the Church of England transgender affirming guidance to primary schools and announces that the Church will funnel £100 million pounds into reparation funds for historic links to slavery: righteous dealing or woke virtue-signalling at a time of grave financial need for front line churches and clergy? Prince Harry is denouncing the family and institutions from whence he came. What currents in modern thought and behaviour does he embody and is he is a paragon of wounded virtue or simply an ungrateful opportunist who is willing to sell his own family out for money?
We offer some scriptural on the men who built their houses on the rock and sand respectively, answer a Question the Rev on God's appearances in Scripture and much much more!

Clown Church - Irreverend Episode 102
Church of England vicars Daniel French, Thomas Pelham and Jamie Franklin sit down to tackle the most pertinent stories. This week: COP27 crisis talk continues as the Archbishop of Canterbury says that the world is (still) close to the point of no return whilst the ex-archbish, Rowan Williams, leads a delegation of "faith" leaders up a hill proclaiming ten new commandments for climate repentance. Meanwhile, the Diocese of Ely have asked academics at the University of Cambridge to tell them how to make money out of their church buildings and the University have responded by telling them to turn them into literal circuses. Also, in wider news, it turns out that the scientific study into a church choir Covid-19 "super spreader" event that was used not only to ban singing in church but to restrict indoor gatherings more generally was - you guessed it - based on flimsy evidence. Colour us shocked to the core in this week's offering of Irreverend: Faith and Current Affairs!

Thou shalt not dissent - Irreverend Episode 92
PLEASE NOTE - This episode was recorded before the sad death of Queen Elizabeth II. Our condolences are with Her Majesty's family and all who mourn. We will certainly discuss our great monarch's passing on next week's show. May her soul rest in peace with God after her long years of devoted service.
Church of England reverends Daniel French and Jamie Franklin sit down to talk about the big things in our culture and the church. Today, a discussion on anger and forgiveness for one's enemies, retrospective on Lockdown in the light of the new Frankfurt Declaration (https://frankfurtdeclaration.com ), Liz Truss becomes Prime Minister and "controversial" Roman Catholic Therese Coffey becomes Health Secretary, the Rev'd Dr Bernard Randall looks to his diocese for support after being fired from his post at Trent College for promoting Anglican doctrine - guess what happened next?, will the CofE continue to support the Net Zero agenda when pensioners start freezing in the dark this Winter because of it?, and we revisit the question of whether or not there is a moral way of refusing to pay exorbitant energy bills. That and much much more on this episode of Irreverend: Faith and Current Affairs!

In this episode of Irreverend, hosted by Rev Jamie Franklin, we look at football as social engineering, including political messaging in the recent women's Euros final and the decision by Premier League clubs only to "take the knee" at specific important moments during the upcoming season. We also review recents comments by Liz Truss to the effect that if she becomes Prime Minister she will not implement any more lockdowns. Further to this, we assess Jeremy Corbyn's opining that more should be done to bring about peace in Ukraine - is this as shocking and revolutionary as some are taking it to be? All this, your questions answered in Question the Rev and more in this episode of Irreverend!

"Replant the traditions..." w/ Dr Yoram Hazony - Irreverend Episode 95
Church of England vicars Jamie Franklin and Daniel French sat down to chat about the big stories in the news: the Queen's funeral (again), "far-right" evil fascists taking power in Italy, building Benedict Option style communities for the transmission of the faith and what to do when your deanery synod is populated by eco-loons.
Before all that, however, Jamie was privileged to be joined by distinguished political philosopher Dr Yoram Hazony, chair of the Edmund Burke Foundation and author of the new book 'Conversatism: A Rediscovery'. Topics included what is like to live a conservative life, the pitfalls of liberalism and Neo-Marxism, why nationalism is central to the conservative vision, whether or not Dr Hazony is a relativist, the appeal of Jordan Peterson and much much more!

Winter Blackouts, Nuclear War, Covid Loneliness and More - Irreverend Episode 97
Church of England Rev Jamie Franklin engages the huge issues of the day from the perspective of the Christian faith: Was the sexual revolution a good thing? How should we respond to the shaking of Western civilisation as nuclear war and power outages threaten our well-being? What should we say to people who are still terrified of Covid? All these questioned answers (probably not comprehensively), your Question the Revs tackled and much much more in this week's Irreverend: Faith and Current Affairs!

Armbands at Dawn - Irreverend Episode 103
Church of England vicars Daniel French, Thomas Pelham and Jamie Franklin sit down to talk about the most important issues in church and society. This week we begin with some reflection upon the two "beasts" of Revelation 13 and how the imagery of persecution, faith and endurance is relevant to Christians in the twenty-first century, especially pertaining to persecuted Christians in nations such as Qatar, Iran, Tunisia and Morocco who are represented at this year's football World Cup. From the serious to the silly, we discuss whether the Church of England was correct to issue guidance saying that churches should not schedule their carol services for the same time as the World Cup final and we take in the somewhat questionable claim that elite western footballers have been silenced because they were threatened with yellow cards if they wore rainbow armbands out on the field. (All will be explained.) What does the moral and philosophical incoherence on display by footballers, journalists and western institutions reveal to us about ourselves and how can the Christian faith speak to this confusion? In Twits on Twitter, it can be no other than FIFA president Gianni Infantino's bizarre soliloquy, in which, in order to justify the questionable decision to stage the World Cup in Qatar, he claims that he "feels" like he is various things such as a Qatari, a gay person, disabled and a migrant worker. We didn't understand either.
In Question the Rev, questions about Bible translations, ex-NHS staff becoming lay preachers and whether or not the country should be officially Christian or secular from a political perspective. All that and more or course in this week's episode of Irreverend: Faith and Current Affairs! (Chapter timings available below.)
