The youngest one turned 14, but 51 of them were 18-years-old ones and never turned 19. In January 1943, the Young Guard was defeated by the Germans. Most of the Young Guards were captured and executed after severe torture. Five of them (3 boys and 2 girls) were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union (posthumously) - Oleg Koshevoy (18 years old), Ulyana Gromova (turned 19 two weeks before death), Lyubov Shevtsova (19 years old), Sergei Tyulenin (18 years old), Ivan Zemnukhov (19 years old)
