How Earwax Proves We’re Stressing out the Whales
A whale's earwax is built up in layers and even tells its age like a trees rings. But scientists have discovered the wax holds much more information than its age. Pollutants and hormones become trapped within each layer of wax throughout a whales life. By measuring the presence for these in the wax, a history of a whales health can be made.

How Time Travel Is Possible, and May Already Be Happening
Technology that allows us to travel time doesn't exist, but it might be possible according to theory. Famous scientist Albert Einstein theorized that time is relative depending how fast you travel. For example, the faster you move in space, the slower you move in time. But to travel a significant amount of time, you'd need to travel close to the speed of light...

The Science Behind Hangovers: What Actually Causes Them?
When alcohol reaches our liver to metabolize, it produces the highly toxic chemical acetaldehyde. Our bodies combat this with acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, a naturally ocurring enzyme. But drinking too much can overwhelm these enzymes, leading to a build up of acetaldehyde. This may result in a hangover, nausea, fatigue and even loss of intelligence.

Ten Of The World’s Most Interesting Cultural Rituals
There are cultures all around the world that we are not familiar with. Unless you have gone out of your way to learn about these other cultures, you are probably completely oblivious to what goes on with other people. Most people probably are only familiar with their own cultures and maybe the cultures present around them. All around the world, people from different cultures are eating different things, dress and talk differently, and do different practices. Some might wear certain robes or dresses, or some may cut their hair in a certain way, or have interesting body piercings. What may seem unusual to others, is the norm for some group of people. They in fact, might think the way you act or do certain things is strange, when you consider it normal.
This video discusses 10 of the world’s most interesting cultural rituals. There will definitely be things in here that will shock you, but it is very interesting to see what is going on in other parts of the world!
Coming in at number 10 is something called El Colacho. This is an annual festival in which men dress as devils and jump over babies that are lying in the street! This festival is held in Castrillo de Murcia, Spain and dates back to the 1600s. It is meant to absolve the babies of sins; the babies were born in approximately the last 12 months since the last event.
The next ritual on the list is known as sky burial. This is practiced by Tibetan Buddhists who take their dead ones to the top of a mountain to be feasted on by vultures. They do this to honor nature with the passing of their people. Monks are very spiritual and because of that, a lifeless body is not that sacred since it is just an empty vessel. They give it back to the elements by placing the body on the mountain top. The dead corpse is either scavenged upon and goes back to the living things, or decompose naturally, and goes back to nature.
A very interesting ritual on this list is called Kanamara Matsuri. It is actually known as the “Penis Festival” and is basically what is sounds like. A festival of penis inspired things, parades, snacks, penis shaped things, etc. This would be unusual to see a phallic shaped float being paraded down the street! This event is meant to bring fertility and prosperity. It is also supposed to bring harmony to relationships, and this event is practiced in Kawasaki, Japan.
Another interesting ritual is Sokushinbutsu, which is the live mummification process done by monks. They have a very strict diet of only pine needles and seeds which keep them from decomposing since they keep them dehydrated. They get extremely skinny and boney, and they look like a living mummy. They must be extremely dedicated to practicing this!
There are more rituals in this video that you should check out. They are quite surprising and some are pretty shocking. It is interesting to learn about other cultures in the world and see the things they practice. This video does a great job showing you some interesting practices!

Floating Pipe Will Clean Up 90% Of Ocean Debris By 2040
Ocean debris is a major problem we have right now in the world. There is so much littering that goes on, and people are not helping to keep the waters clean. This video discusses a pipe that is planning to clean up the ocean debris. This is such a great video and very informative to watch. It is amazing how inspiring others and their inventions can be. Someone was fed up with all the water debris, they decided to make a change. This floating pipe, will eliminate up to 90% of ocean debris by the year 2040. That is still quite some years ahead, but that is what it takes to clean up the major mistakes we as humans have made. Hopefully this will help spread awareness about the big issue of people polluting the waters with waste and debris.
There is approximately 150 million tons of trash in our ocean. People continue to litter our oceans and it is a major problem that isn’t discussed often. The way things are going right now looks bad as it is expected the amount of trash in the next decade to triple. There is already 150 million tons of accumulated trash in our oceans, and it is going to be tripled in 10 years. That is so shocking and disturbing. There are so many people on the earth right now that it is almost expected this could happen. Especially when most people are not doing anything to stop their habits of throwing trash in the ocean. Not only is this lifestyle unhealthy for aquatic life, but it pollutes the oceans and therefore the food we eat that lives in them. All the chemicals contaminate the ocean and poison it.
There is a 2000 foot long pipe that will hopefully solve this issue. This pipe is called Wilson and it will help clean up the trash in the ocean. This pipe is shaped like a U and it drags a net behind it at as well. The net and the pipe will move and collect floating debris from the oceans.. It uses its U shape to wrap around the trash and collect it at the bottom of the U. This will collect the trash both in the net and the U of the pipe! Once all the trash is collected in the U and the net, a boat will come and collect the trash and dispose of it. The trash will be collecting for a few months then it will be disposed of so the process can start all over again. It kind of acts like a giant dust pan, waiting for you to empty it!
The trash that is collected will then be recycled and turned into other useful things for us. The first task for Wilson will be the great pacific garbage patch which is a giant patch of garbage that is between California and Hawaii. Wilson will do a big dent in this patch while it is there for 6 months! Wilson seems like such a great idea and it will surely help out the terrible situation we are in!

Sicilian Town That Is Frozen In Time
In this video we have the pleasure to discover an old Sicilian town that’s been abandoned for over 50 years. Poggioreale (in the Sicilian language: Poggiuriali) is a small town and a comune in the province of Trapani, western Sicily, southern Italy, located in the Belice valley. The landscape shown in this video is breathtaking. The hills in the background are very green and the sky is very blue, decorated by shiny white clouds. The reason for this abandoned beauty is that in 1968, the Sicilian town of Poggioreale was hit by a strong and deadly earthquake. This natural disaster resulted in more than 200 people losing their lives and thousands were left without a shelter. The town, or what’s left of it, is still standing up to this day and reminds us of that horrible day when people died and a lot were put in critical situations. Instead of trying to rebuild the town over the ruins, another village was built not so far away from the location of the first one.
The local population was not happy about that decision and they preferred to move away before the new village was finished. The result of this is a lot of memories and history have been left behind. The new town was not really accepted, much of the population of the town hated it. The reconstruction process lacked the old look of Poggioreale, and that’s why the population was really mad since their favorite place had been changed forever, and not in good ways. Slowly the area saw its population decreasing, as a direct results of the events that occurred in this tiny village.
The result of all this is a ghost town, where only stray dogs are just living there, and the houses can be bought for such low prices. The population of Poggioreale are hoping for a change. The ghost town that they are left with could be turned into a tourist destination. They could talk about the events that took place in the village as well as make money, which could lead to an actual reconstruction of the village, one that the residents would accept.
Nevertheless, it is still a really good location if you wish to explore an abandoned site. Today, it is the original Poggioreale that is proving most attractive. Thousands of tourists visit the “ghost town” every year, wandering among its roofless homes, visiting the ruins, while having the green hills by the side. If you decide to head over to this tiny Sicilian village, you need to respect the history. Do not explore places that are closed to public, no matter the reason. It is still a place where people were living for decades and their history was taken away from them by a natural disaster. Respect the place, do not leave rubbish upon visiting. If you believe that the city will revive from its ashes one day, then you need to give it t proper amount of respect.
