Biden 'stunned' by Iranian protests.
CNN) President Joe Biden said Friday he was "stunned" by how Iranians have reacted to the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, saying the nation has been "awakened" by the women-led protests and won't be quieted for "a long, long time."
While visiting Irvine Valley Community College in California, Biden made brief comments on the ongoing protests in Iran following ahead of his formal speech, saying that the US stands with the women of Iran. Southern California has traditionally had a very large population of Iranian immigrants.
"Iran has to end the violence against its own citizens simply exercising their fundamental rights," Biden

Flu 'gathering speed' across US as health officials
CNN) US health officials are becoming increasingly concerned about this year's flu season -- and are already seeing signs that the virus is spreading.
As the 2022-23 flu season gets underway, one high school in California is facing a "high number of absences" among students due to possible flu cases. Flu activity in the United States often starts to increase in October and usually peaks between December and February.
"We can confirm that there is a high number of absences at Henry High School due to probable Influenza," Samer Naji, a spokesperson for the San Diego Unified School District, said in an email to CNN on Thursday. There were about 1,000 absences Wednesday, out of 2,600 students.

Justice Department formally appeals appointment of special master in Mar-a-Lago documents case
CNN) The Justice Department officially appealed the appointment of the special master, who is overseeing the review of documents seized from former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate, in a brief filed with the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday.
The Justice Department centered their brief on sweeping criticism of lower court Judge Aileen Cannon's actions, arguing she had no authority to interfere with their federal criminal investigation. The Justice Department is asking the federal appeals court to invalidate Cannon's order and end the special master's review of documents.
"District courts have no general equitable authority to superintend federal criminal investigations," the brief said. "[I]nstead, challenges to the government's use of the evidence recovered in a search are resolved through ordinary criminal motions practice if and when charges are filed. Here, however, the district court granted the extraordinary relief Plaintiff sought...."

Liz Truss ditches another big tax cut and fires her finance minister
London(CNN Business) UK Prime Minister Liz Truss has fired finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng and ditched a big part of her discredited economic strategy in a desperate bid to rescue her month-old premiership.
At a Downing Street news conference, Truss said she was scrapping plans to reverse a rise in business taxes, a move that will save £18 billion ($20 billion), after a revolt by investors and members of her own Conservative Party worried about the impact of soaring government borrowing at a time of decades-high inflation.
It was the second climbdown on a key policy this month: On Oct. 3 the government ditched its plan to slash the top rate of income tax, just over a week after it was announced.

1. January 6
The House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack at the US Capitol voted to subpoena former President Donald Trump during Thursday's public hearing. The committee argued in its final hearing before the midterm elections that Trump was directly involved in the bid to overturn the 2020 election, with the panel presenting new evidence that Trump knew he had lost but had a plan to declare victory no matter the election result. The panel also showed previously unseen footage of congressional leaders taking refuge amid the violence as the panel detailed Trump's inaction during the attack. The committee is now working to present a final report by the end of the year on whether to make any criminal referrals to the Justice Department.
2. Parkland
The Parkland school shooter has avoided the death penalty after a jury recommended he be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the February 2018 massacre at Florida's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School -- a move that left some of the victims' families disappointed and angry. "This jury failed our families today," said Fred Guttenberg, the father of 14-year-old victim Jaime Guttenberg -- one of the 17 people killed in the shooting. The jury's recommendation Thursday came after a monthslong trial to decide the gunman's punishment. A judge is expected to issue the gunman's formal sentence on November 1. Victims and family members are expected to speak before the sentence is delivered that day.
3. Raleigh
Five people -- including an off-duty police officer -- were killed and at least two others were wounded in a shooting Thursday in Raleigh, North Carolina, police said. The shooting unfolded around 5 p.m. in the neighborhood of Hedingham and an hourslong ordeal ensued as authorities worked to apprehend the suspect. The suspected shooter, a minor, was taken into custody four and a half hours later, police said. "Tonight, terror has reached our doorstep. The nightmare of every community has come to Raleigh," Gov. Roy Cooper said during a news conference. "This is a senseless, horrific and infuriating act of violence that has been committed." There have been at least 531 mass shootings in the US so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
4. Ukraine
In a near unanimous vote earlier today, an assembly of European lawmakers voted overwhelmingly in favor of Russia being declared a "terrorist" regime. A total of 99 out of 100 members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe voted in support of the resolution. Only a Turkish MP from the Republican People's Party abstained. Also today, Russia hit the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia following a week of deadly strikes on civilian targets in the country. Additionally, Russian officials said their air defenses had shot down rockets in the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine.
5. NASA
Four astronauts are scheduled to splashdown off the coast of Florida today, capping off a nearly six-month mission at the International Space Station. Rough weather has forced some delays, but NASA and SpaceX say the astronauts are still expected to return home at 4:50 p.m. ET. The spacecraft that will bring the astronauts home typically has seven potential landing zones -- just off the coast of Pensacola, Tampa, Tallahassee, Panama City, Cape Canaveral, Daytona and Jacksonville. This mission, called Crew-4, has marked a historic first on the ISS, as Jessica Watkins became the first Black woman to join the space station crew for an extended stay. Also aboard the mission are NASA's Kjell Lindgren, Bob Hines and Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti with the European Space Agency.

Astronauts returning home from space station splash down off Florida coast
CNN) Four astronauts boarded a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule and returned home from the International Space Station on Friday, bringing an end to their nearly six-month stay aboard the orbiting laboratory.
The astronauts — NASA's Kjell Lindgren, Bob Hines and Jessica Watkins as well as Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti with the European Space Agency or ESA — shared goodbye hugs with other astronauts on the space station and strapped into their spacecraft around 10 a.m. ET.
The Crew Dragon spacecraft left its docking port at the ISS around noon ET and made a gradual trek home toward the edge of Earth's thick inner atmosphere. Then, the capsule lit up its thrusters again to orient itself as it began its reentry. This step began to slow the spacecraft from its orbital speed of about 17,500 miles per hour (28,164 kilometers per hour). A heat shield kept the astronauts protected as the fiery swoop back toward Earth heated the spacecraft's exterior to more than 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit (1,650 degrees Celsius).

Jury decides conspiracy theorist Alex Jones should pay nearly $1 billion in damages .
CNN Business) - Far-right talk show host Alex Jones should pay eight families of Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims and one first responder nearly $1 billion in compensatory damages, a Connecticut jury decided Wednesday, capping a wrenching weeks-long trial that put on display the serious harm inflicted by the conspiracy theorist's lies. With its punishing award, the decision could shrink or even doom Jones' Infowars media empire, which has been at the center of major conspiracy theories dating back to former President George W. Bush's administration and was embraced by President Donald Trump. The decision marks a key moment in the years-long process that began in 2018 when the families took legal action against Jones and his company, Free Speech Systems, the parent of the fringe media organization Infowars. Jones baselessly said again and again after the 2012 mass shooting, in which 26 people were killed, that the incident was staged, and that the families and first responders were "crisis actors." The plaintiffs throughout the trial described in poignant terms how the lies had prompted unrelenting harassment against them and compounded the emotional agony of losing their loved ones. Plaintiffs in the trial included family members of eight school students and employees, in addition to one FBI agent who responded to the scene. The three cases were all condensed into the single trial. Christopher Mattei, an attorney for the plaintiffs, urged jurors to award at least a half a billion dollars for having permanently mangled the lives of his clients. The figure, he said, would represent the more than 550 million online impressions Jones' Sandy Hook lie allegedly received online. You may say that is astronomical. It is," Mattei said. "It's exactly what Alex Jones set himself up to do. That's what he built. He built a lie machine that could push this stuff out. You reap what you sow." The decision in Connecticut comes two months after a separate jury in Texas determined that Jones and his company should award two Sandy Hook parents who sued in that state nearly $50 million. Later this month, the judge in that case will consider whether to reduce the punitive damages awarded under Texas law.
While Jones initially lied about the 2012 shooting, he later acknowledged that the massacre had occurred as he faced multiple lawsuits. But he failed to comply with court orders during the discovery process of the lawsuits in Connecticut and Texas, leading the families in each state to win default judgments against him During the latest trial, families of the Sandy Hook victims offered emotional testimony, telling the jury in haunting terms how Jones' lies about the shooting had permanently altered their lives and compounded the pain of losing their loved ones. p Jones, who was cross-examined by the plaintiffs' attorneys, but chose not to testify in his own defense as was originally planned, sought to portray himself as a victim of an elaborate "deep state" conspiracy against him. a particularly explosive moment in the trial, Jones tangled with an attorney for the plaintiffs, accusing him of "ambulance chasing," before descending into an unhinged rant in court about "liberals."The judge overseeing the case admonished Jones several times during his testimony, warning him even at one point that he could be held in contempt of court if he violated her rules moving forward. Jones has attacked the judicial process, even acknowledging in court that he had referred to the proceedings as those of a "kangaroo court" and called the judge a "tyrant." He has already indicated that he plans to appeal.

Trump employee tells FBI that Trump directed boxes to be moved at Mar-a-Lago after subpoena served
CNN) - A Trump employee has told the FBI about being directed by the former President to move boxes out of a basement storage room to his residence at Mar-a-Lago after Donald Trump's legal team received a subpoena for any classified documents at the Florida estate, according to a source familiar with the witness' description. The FBI also has surveillance footage showing a staffer moving boxes out of the storage room, the source told CNN. The witness account of Trump's actions after the subpoena was served in May coupled with the footage could be key to the federal criminal investigation that's looking into a range of potential crimes, including obstruction, destruction of government records and mishandling of classified information. FBI agents executed a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago in August and seized thousands of documents, including about 100 marked as classified. The FBI also subpoenaed the Trump Organization for surveillance video from the resort. The Trump employee initially denied handling sensitive documents or boxes at Mar-a-Lago, according to the source. But the FBI developed evidence that prompted investigators to go back to the witness, who revised their story to say Trump had given instructions to move the boxes, the source said. The Washington Post was the first to report on the witness account.

Saudis aren’t weaponizing oil like Americans claim, top official says
Saudi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel al-Jubeir said his country partnered with Russia to slash oil production in order to stabilize markets and denied that there were political motives behind the decision, which has enraged US leaders and sparked calls to rethink ties with Riyadh.
“We’re trying to make sure we don’t have erratic swings in prices,” al-Jubeir, one of Saudi Arabia’s top diplomats, told CNN’s Becky Anderson on Wednesday. “Our track record has been clear — we have always worked assiduously to maintain stability in the oil markets.”
Last week, OPEC+, the oil cartel led by Saudi Arabia and Russia, agreed to slash production by 2 million barrels per day, twice as much as analysts had predicted, in the biggest cut since the Covid-19 pandemic.
