Tom Neale – The Voluntary Castaway
Thomas Francis Neale was a New Zealand bushcraft and survival enthusiast, who, unlike the other castaway stories I have here on my channel, chose this himself.
He spent much of his life in the Cook Islands, a total of 16 years, in three sessions – living alone on an island of the Suwarrow atoll, the first two of which were the basis of his popular autobiography An Island To Oneself.
Even though being a father of 4, or maybe even 6 children, he was an absentee father, following his dream to the bitter end.

What was it like to be a Woman in Ancient Egypt?
In the ancient era most women were considered secondary citizens and where ruled by their men.
However, there was one place that stood out and went in the opposite direction, namely ancient Egypt.
Because Women in ancient Egypt had some special rights other women did not have in other comparable societies. They could own property, choose their own profession and were, at court, legally equal to men.
So what was it like to be a woman in ancient Egypt?

The Bounty Mutineers Descendants New Home - The History of Norfolk Island
In 1856, as Pitcairn Island faced overcrowding, its inhabitants were relocated to Norfolk Island, forever changing the island's destiny.
Today, Norfolk Island boasts more descendants of the mutineers than even Pitcairn itself, a fact shrouded in a remarkable tale of human migration.
Yet, Norfolk Island's rich history is not confined to this unique lineage. Nearly half of its current population can trace their roots back to the Pitcairn mutineers, with one-third hailing from the Australian mainland and one-fifth from New Zealand.
But amidst the stunning landscapes and warm community spirit lies a darker past. Norfolk Island has been the site of not one, but two penal colonies, earning it the ominous nickname 'Hell in the Pacific.'
Here, the British would send their most undesirables, to be penalized in a most dreaded way, and dying on this “God forsaken island.”
It had several prison uprisings, and when guilty were told that they were to be hanged; they fell on their knees, thanking God that their time finally was up.

Vice-Fuhrer Rudolf Hess Strange Flight to Britain
In 1941, one of the strangest events of World War 2 happened, when Vice-Fuhrer Rudolf Hess, flew to Scotland, jumped out of a plane in a parachute, before landing close to the Duke of Hamilton’s estate.
He insisted that he had an important message for the Duke, but was quickly arrested and spent the rest of his life in prison, before he was found hanged in his cell, aged 93.
Shrouded in mystery, the story of Rudolf Hess’s daring flight has spawned endless speculations of why one of the most powerful men in Germany did this.
Had he really come alone? Had someone sent him to Scotland, or had someone sent for him? Or was this simply the act of a man that had lost his mind?

The Vikings in the Middle East
The Vikings sailed, plundered and became rulers almost wherever they came. They demanded tribute or “danegeld” as it was called, in order not to attack the unfortunate people who got a “visit” from them.
But, when the Vikings came all the way to the Middle-East, they interacted with the Muslims and Persians in a different way than they had done with most of the other people they had met.

Spartan Women - What was it like to be a woman in ancient Sparta?
Spartan women are some of the most fascinating women in history. Due to the men’s absent from the city, usually being busy going to war with someone, women were in many ways the true rulers of Sparta.
They had more rights and enjoyed greater autonomy than women in any other Greek city-state.

Meet Caterina Sforza - The Fearless Renaissance Woman Who Went Into Battle 7 Months Pregnant
In 15th-century Italy, the cunning Caterina Sforza ruthlessly defended her family's fortunes at any cost.
When enemies laid siege to her fortress, captured her children and threatened to slit their throats, she stood on the walls of Imola and lifted her skirts, calling out to them to do it, because she could always make more children.
Sforza had already outlived a father and a husband who died at the hands of an assassin. She witnessed the brutal murders of her lover, and when enemies threatened her power, Caterina rode into battle, 7 months pregnant.
In the final years of her life, she confided to a monk:
"If I could write everything that happened, I would shock the world”.

The Mutiny on the Bounty and Life at Pitcairn Island
The Bounty had a single mission in support of an experiment: it was to travel to Tahiti; pick up breadfruit plants; and transport them to the West Indies, in the hopes they would grow well there and become a cheap source of food for slaves. In 1787, Lieutenant William Bligh was selected to command the Bounty, the first crewman he recruited was Fletcher Christian, a friend with whom he'd sailed before.
But from the very start, the mission got in to trouble and was delayed for several weeks. The raining season in Tahiti would delay the gathering of the plant with several months if they did not reach Tahiti in time.
This would later have dire consequences for the ship and its crew.
So what really happened?
