After the shooting, Grayson discouraged his partner from getting a medical kit to help Massey, stating that it was a headshot and there was nothing they could do. However, they eventually attempted to stop the bleeding. Grayson later told responding police that Massey had come at him with boiling water and that he shot her in self-defense. However, Massey's family and their lawyer, Ben Crump, disputed this account, stating that Massey needed help, not a bullet to her face. Massey's father, James Wilburn, demanded transparency and accountability from the county court system in their investigation and prosecution of the shooting. Grayson is facing life in prison for murder.
