NASA NASA is a division of the US government (note 1). It is in charge of the American space program. It was established in 1957, and yearly spending is expected to total $16 billion. Along with managing the space program, NASA is in charge of both long-term civil and military space research. Since the Soviet Union's demise, other organizations around the world view NASA as the leading space agency. The agency was established on October 1, 1958, as a civilian, non-military organization for the advancement of peaceful scientific research. One of the organization's founders is former US President Dwight Eisenhower.
