Bulls are moved to a new farm to build more rest period.
Bulls are moved to a new farm to build more rest period. We moved the bulls to the ram farm to give us an extra month of recovery on the bull farm. By strip grazing the bulls tightly we will also put some pressure on the autumn olive trees that are encroaching on the pasture.

Isaac puts 800,000 lbs stocking density on Sericea Lespedeza with cow/calf mob with 30-minute moves.
Isaac puts 800,000 lbs stocking density on Sericea Lespedeza with cow/calf mob with 30-minute moves. Isaac spent the whole day with our cow/calf mob and moved them 15 times to get maximum animal hoof & grazing impact on the Sericea area of our pasture. The cows did a great job of eating and trampling everything in each temporary paddock strip. It will be interesting to see what this area looks like with 60 days of recovery.

With the rain comes a jungle of green leafed Shrub Lespedeza! If you're looking for a fodder tree for sheep or goats, check out planting some Shrub Lespedeza. Once established it does not need to be replanted as long as you do not overgraze it.

Brushogged pasture versus non-brushogged pasture after 4 days of consecutive rain.
Brushogged pasture versus non-brushogged pasture after 4 days of consecutive rain. The grass pastures look like the spring flush just hit us in August! Unbelievable what happens when you leave a good residual of forage protecting your precious soil. The rains were captured where they fell on the pastures. Minimal runoff and an explosion of new green grass blades accompanied by fresh earthworm castings for natural fertilizer. It just doesn't get any better than that!

What a difference a good rain makes!
What a difference a good rain makes! With our recent rains, the cow mob is excited to have some new green grass to forage on. You can tell there is excitement in the mob to reach the new paddock. Nothing like the sound of running water in the creek after going months without rain!

This is the perfect Gama Grass field residual to leave after grazing.
This is the perfect Gama Grass field residual to leave after grazing. Never graze Gama Grass shorter than 8" or you may weaken the plant. Gama grass stores most of the plant nutrients for survival in the first 8" above ground. Gama really shines bright in droughts with roots extending 20 feet into the soil profile. Gama Grass is a native warm season grass that thrives in summer heat.

When droughty conditions continue to persist, make sure you leave adequate cover on your soil.
When droughty conditions continue to persist, make sure you leave adequate cover on your soil. Your focus needs to be on protecting your soil from sunlight when day temperatures hit 100 degrees. With the excessive dry conditions our forage is much more nutrient dense than when we get tons of rain.

Cattle drive to recovered farm in a severe drought.
Cattle drive to recovered farm in a severe drought. With no rain and the excessive heat wave we are focused on keeping a good canopy of forage behind as we rotate the cow mob forward. We are achieving excellent animal performance with our 3 moves per day in extreme heat. Another plus for owning 1000 lb red South Poll cattle that can thrive in heat and fescue pastures.
