Oakville high school at centre of teacher attire controversy receives bomb threat
An Oakville, Ont. school went into lockdown for the entire day after it received a bomb threat on Wednesday. Oakville Trafalgar High School has been cleared to reopen, but the threat is causing a lot of concern.
Global News has learned that the threat is connected to a teacher who had gained international attention for their appearance.
The teacher was previously pictured wearing large prosthetic breasts in class. After the images went viral back in September, the school board conducted a dress code review. And just last week it was ultimately determined that the teacher wouldn’t be subject to a dress code while in class.

Buffalo blizzard: New York governor warns of "major storm," declaring local states of emergency
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared an emergency on Tuesday in parts of the state ahead of what she called “a major, major storm.”
“As of 10 a.m. this morning, we are under a state of emergency in the 11 counties that have been identified as most at risk," said Hochul.
“This is considered an extreme event, an extreme weather event. That means it's dangerous. It also means it's life-threatening.”
She added that some areas in the state “could possibly see anywhere from four to six feet total between now and Sunday.”
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm watch for the Buffalo area, warning that multiple feet of lake-effect snow could cripple the city and surrounding area.
Hochul urged New Yorkers to “stay off the roads, be safe.”

China calls Xi-Trudeau confrontation "quite normal"
After a rare public confrontation between Chinese president Xi Jinping and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during the G20 summit, the Chinese foreign affairs ministry responded by saying it was "quite normal" and that it shouldn't be interpreted as Xi criticizing or blaming anyone.
Another reason the confrontation between Xi and Trudeau is so remarkable is it's a rare glimpse into Xi's personality from a leader who's normally highly choreographed.
The rare display of annoyance by the Chinese leader was likely sprung from reports that Trudeau had brought up "serious concerns" about alleged spying and Chinese "interference" in Canadian elections.

Canada's inflation rates hold steady in October as economists expect another rate hike
Some better than expected news today about the cost of living in Canada — despite the high price of gasoline, inflation is holding steady in October and some grocery prices began to level out.
Economists were expecting worse, but inflation still remains hot at 6.9 per cent for the second month in a row.
Some items are seeing price increases due to exacerbating factors. Lettuce rose over 30 per cent during the month of October, partially due to a key California region being hit with diseased crops in a growing season already impacted by drought and extreme heat.
With inflation still elevated, money markets expect yet another rate hike from the Bank of Canada in December.
Global's Anne Gaviola reports.

Brazil election: Bolsonaro calls on protesters to end blockades on nation's roads
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro called on protesters on Wednesday to put an end to blockades they had set up on roads across the nation in the days since the presidential runoff election.
"I'm just as upset, as sad as you. But we have to keep our head in place," he said, calling demonstrations welcome as part of democracy but the blockades on the nation's highways are making ongoing demonstrations illegitimate. He called on his supporters to choose other ways to demonstrate.
Authorities said they were making headway in their efforts to clear blockades, but there are still concerns the demonstrations were disrupting fuel distribution, industrial activity and food deliveries. Bolsonaro has not conceded his loss to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, though he said he would follow the constitution, indicating a transition was likely to take place.

China urges Canada to stop "unreasonable suppression" of Chinese companies
China's foreign ministry on urged the Canadian government on Nov. 3 to stop the "suppression" of Chinese companies to provide a "fair, just and non-discriminatory" business environment for its domestic firms.

The three firms ordered to divest their investments are Sinomine (Hong Kong) Rare Metals Resources Co Ltd, Chengze Lithium International Ltd, also based in Hong Kong and Zangge Mining Investment (Chengdu) Co Ltd.
The government ordered the divestiture after a "rigorous scrutiny" of foreign firms by Canada's national security and intelligence community, Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne said in a statement.

Russia changes course on Ukraine grain deal after conversation with Turkey's Erdogan
Russia announced on Wednesday that it would renew its participation in an agreement allowing Ukraine to export grain via the Black Sea, just four days after suspending its role in the deal.
The U-turn followed a phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday, and repeated conversations between their defence ministers.
Russia had suspended their participation on Saturday after it blamed Ukraine for a drone attack on Moscow's fleet in Crimea. Kyiv has not claimed responsibility and denies using the grain program's security corridor for military purposes.

Ontario NDP members kicked out of legislature amid debate over education workers' strike
Several NDP MPPs were ejected from the Ontario legislature on Wednesday as a debate over the government's response to contract negotiations with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) descended into chaos.
#GlobalNews #USA #UK #Biden #America #US #Today
The government has said it would return to the table if the mediator asks, and had wanted to hear if CUPE’s new offer was “reasonable.” But Stephen Lecce said Wednesday any new proposal must include cancelling a strike planned for Friday.
The 55,000 workers such as early childhood educators, educational assistants and custodians plan to walk off the job, despite looming legislation that would make it illegal. CUPE has not indicated whether the strike would go beyond Friday.
The Ontario government has introduced a bill – and is hoping to pass it this week – to impose a contract on the education workers and ban them from striking upon threat of steep fines.

Eighty-four per cent of Canadians are worried that inflation will make everyday things less affordable, with women and young adults aged 18 to 34 especially worried about making ends meet.
Vice-President of Ipsos Sean Simpson said the polling included a snapshot of young families and 60 per cent of those with children were more concerned about putting food on the table, compared to 40 per cent of those families without children.

Canada raises immigration targets, aims for 500,000 new immigrants per year by 2025
The Canadian government is planning a massive increase in the number of immigrants entering Canada, with a goal of seeing 500,000 people arrive each year by 2025.
Immigration Minister Sean Fraser revealed the new targets Tuesday, saying the move is necessary to ensure Canada’s economic prosperity.
The new plan puts an emphasis on increasing the number of immigrants who will be admitted based on their work skills or experience over the next three years.
Previously, Ottawa’s immigration goals planned for 401,000 new permanent residents in 2021, 411,000 in 2022, and 421,000 in 2023.

Canada’s ER crisis: Doctors urge governments to find solutions for “dangerous” wait times
Emergency room doctors say patients are experiencing “dangerous” wait times in ERs across the country and they are calling on federal and provincial governments to stop pointing fingers and work together towards a solution.
One of the biggest concerns is significant nursing shortages, which have led to bed closures in emergency departments and within medical units in hospitals. This means fewer available beds and personnel to care for patients at a time when hospitals are seeing an influx of sick Canadians.
Additionally, many Canadians have no choice but to go to ERs as they are unable to access primary care thanks to a national shortage of family physicians.
Health workers already burned out from working flat-out during the last two-and-a-half years of the pandemic are now left short-staffed amid a surge in patients due to waves of COVID-19 continuing and an unusually early start to the respiratory virus season.
As Heather Yourex-West reports, doctors say long wait times have put patients’ lives at risk.

At least 100 killed after 2 car bombs explode at Somalia’s education ministry
At least 100 people were killed and hundreds more were wounded on Saturday when two car bombs exploded at Somalia’s education ministry, next to a busy market intersection.
Although no group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, Somalian President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud blamed al Qaeda-linked group al Shabaab and warned that the death toll was likely to rise.
Saturday’s attack was the deadliest since a truck bomb exploded at the same intersection in October 2017, killing more than 500 people.
The first of the explosions hit the education ministry around 2 p.m. local time, while the second hit as ambulances arrived and people gathered to help the victims.
Al Shabaab militants, who are seeking to topple the government and establish there own rule based on an extreme interpretation of Islamic law, frequently stage attacks in Mogadishu and elsewhere in the country. But the group typically avoids claiming responsibility for attacks that result in a large loss of life.
