Mining for "Diamond" Crystals at Douglas Lake in East Tennessee!
Hi! My name is Nicole, and in this video, I’m looking for “Douglas Diamonds,” which are very much like Herkimer Diamonds. They’re both quartz crystals but they can form in a shape called a “hexagonal bipyramid,” which resembles the octahedron formation of natural diamonds. That’s how they got their nickname. Make sure you watch until the very end, and you will see the crystals that I found when they’re all cleaned up.
I took this trip to Douglas Lake on November 29, 2023 but waited until I got back from the Tucson Gem and Mineral Shows to finish the editing. I apologize for some of the blurry footage of my collecting, but the sun was so bright that day that it was hard to see what I was filming. If you can go on a partly cloudy day, that’s probably going to be your best bet. Even with a cloudy sky, the crystals will show up nicely against the red dirt.
The location where this was filmed is known as “the boat launch.” It’s free of charge and open to the public. It is government property, though, so there are rules to follow. You can surface collect or dig down about six inches. Anything more than that could get you fined and asked to leave by a park ranger. I usually just walk around and pick up the crystals when I find them. There’s no need to be greedy.
Collecting can only be done when the lake level is lowered in late fall through about the middle of March. Some of the locals start going up there in October, but I seem to find my best crystals after a good rain in January or February. The timing can vary a little from year to year, so I use this handy website to watch the lake levels.

Tucson Gem Show 2024 – Shopping for Crystals at The Red Lion Inn & Visiting Gates Pass!
I’m a GIA graduate gemologist and founder of Gemaura, LLC. In this video, I’m touring and shopping for gems and crystals at the Globex Gem and Mineral Show, located at the Red Lion Inn, 222 South Freeway, Tucson, AZ 85745. This is just one of over 40 venues that make up The Tucson Gem, Mineral and Fossil Showcase in Tucson, Arizona. My goal for this video was to give you a “flavor” of this show, instead of a comprehensive look at everything I saw, so I hope that you enjoy this format.
This video also includes clips and photos from the Gates Pass and Saguaro National Park area. It’s a beautiful part of Arizona, and I always take the time to visit the area when I’m in Tucson for the gem show.
