As many people as there are that seem to hate on this game, I hope there’s some folks out there who like it. the music is a vibe, I mean it had to be. The first game set the bar really high cos the music in FFX really showcased what the PS2 was capable of in turns of cinematics and Audio Effects, Nobuo Uematsu gave the sequel songwriters a tough act to follow. It was arranged by Noriko Matsueda and Takahito Eguchi and they really pushed the EDM angle into every track. I feel like you could freestyle spoken verse in the breakdowns between the hook, but these lyrics are the ones that hold most meaning to me. I wonder if this one will be “controversial” 🤔 No I’m not trying to glorify self harm, even so- it’s something a lot of teens with trauma go through when they’re in pain but it’s not something they are allowed to show, like a deeply buried personal secret they alone must carry- like a scar on the inside nobody can see. These days with the internet so widely available, and helplines and charity organizations ready to help- I can imagine that it would be easier to reach out… of course there’s also ways that abusers can stifle the whistleblower. I get it. But if you’re in a bad place: you should really talk to someone. I felt like I couldn’t, but the only number I knew was for Childline. And that would only solve like a third of the problem… that and when social services did show up I wasn’t aware of why I was being taken away and manhandled into a car. Felt like I was being punished for speaking up. So I lied to them and told them I made everything up. So now who’d believe me after that? It’s just me and my scars. What’s one more unspoken secret on top of The Big One? Might as well carry that one too…

Looks like we’re all gonna have a bad time… Been kinda rattling this one around in my brain since I first heard this absolute banger and wanted to learn how to play it on like every instrument. This time a throwback to sonic Spinball on the sega Genesis with this track from the first level Toxic Caves and an idea I had kinda loosely fleshed out when I was about 12. I was kinda getting to a really edgy broken mindset about people making their own assumptions and talking shit about me, meanwhile nobody else listening to me unless i literally hurl a chair at a teacher and call them a ignorant b*ch Yeah. Abuse at home was getting so bad- The bullying at school was getting ridiculous. Nowhere felt safe. Teachers were on the bullies side and I was constantly getting punished for their shit. Making a stand and putting a chair in the air was my attempt to showcase that people had literally no clue what I was dealing with. And I was done with keeping these words in my head any longer. If my life was gonna be short I wasn’t gonna leave without making sure everyone had a taste of it. If you were gonna beat me up for a rumor you heard from some toxic tart with a bidet for a face then you better be beating me up for something I ACTUALLY said or did, and then I know why I’m fighting back. Getting blindsided by a kid with a compass is cheap. Fight me head on, and do it cos I ACTUALLY did something to offend you. But yes. I told that girl her face was like a bidet. NOW you can send your goons to fight me. Their jabs are weaker than my stepdad anyway.

This Sonic song leads into the Trauma years series quite perfectly, once you get all the songs in order everything becomes clear. The super secret secret is now hidden in the narrative throughout the songs, putting the timeline together will make some answer’s clearer if you care to detangle the threads. But my story is now told. Every Sonic song I wrote those lyrics for all those years ago have all been posted. (There aren’t any sor Sonic Chaos, Triple Trouble, Sonic CD, Knuckles Chaotix, 3D Blast, etc because I hadn’t played those as a child: those wouldn’t be canon to retroactively add them now) if I feel so inclined I might add them. But I feel like adding non-canon lyrics would be adding false threads to the timeline. I don’t wanna make it harder for anyone who actually wants to know my story.

Well, the fun times were short lived huh? One minute you’re trying to talk yourself up to Swing with your baby at the school dance One Special Night -next you’re looking back at the past like Oh god, go back! I’ve made a mistake! And now there’s a super secret secret you have to carry to your grave. It’s so wild that my whole life I’ve been planning to go back in time and change my past that even young me was trying to figure out a way. I even came up with a special passphrase that Future Me would have to say to little me so I could make sure he was real if I had to trust him… something that would only make sense to younger me so that I don’t grandfather paradox myself out of existence. But then again, would that be so bad?

Let’s figure out if you can figure out where this one goes in the timeline… each song has a specific time period associated with it. Or maybe one it’s thematically related to? Hmm 🤔 So this song went hard for me back in the day, I still think it slaps… for the worst zone imho on Sonic 1 on the Genesis: it has no right to be as good as this on the Master System. This song was kinda giving me that whole big Jazz Swing Band kinda vibes, and parts of it were sorta inspired by the music my grandfather used to play on the old records- and this very odd Claymation music video that my mom played for me- “Reet Petite” by Jackie Wilson. Idk why I was into it- looking back: it’s bloody nightmare fuel. But the song is a bop. There’s other lyrical inspirations sewn throughout the narrative here, but I’m just jammin… don’t mind me.

Let’s get back to the more silly songs from my childhood instead of the depressing angst of the Trauma Years series… Was in two minds about posting this one tbh. Feels like an incomplete set without it… but at least it’s not as bad as the Hilltop Zone lyrics. I feel like this one was inspired by something one of the younger brothers of my school friend said while we were hanging out one time. Never give me a song and a prompt… it will end up with something like this. This rhyme going around in my head was about all I could do to keep myself from controller hurling rage while climbing the sodding never-ending waterfall of doom.

Let’s go back in time a little… Before the trauma really kicked in and reminisce about a simpler time… When walking to school with my friend Charlotte was possibly one of my simpler, yet happier memories. Friends often have their ups and downs but like, 30 years is pretty good. It was harder to make my school route work when she moved, but on mornings where I could make it in time to walk together definitely made it better. Unfortunately there was a point where I was taking detours around my detour to avoid people who wanted to beat me up on the way to school. That’s why it was difficult to make it in time… While I was worried about many things, at least when you were with me I didn’t have to think about them too much. Thanks for everything Chick.

This is catharsis… finally getting to put this together, it needs words. Not that I’m a great singer, but my words have made it off paper at least. (It’s only taken like 26 years) But this feels like the perfect way to end the Trauma Years of this Wierd Gaz Yankovic Project. Thank you for coming along on this rollercoaster through my memories as well as enduring the ups and downs of my past. I’m going back to Sonic 1 on the Sega Master System next for some fun and lively tunes to just call it a complete set but I didn’t wanna leave it with a bittersweet taste after all these hard to swallow memories. Hey y’all, abruptly switching gears on you with a bit of a Tonal shift with the penultimate song of the Trauma Years project… But I promise It’s canon to the timeline. When you’re at the end of your rope and things look the darkest- isn’t it so jarring to feel the shift in your heart when someone reaches out and grabs your hand right as you’re about to go over the edge? That’s kinda how it felt… Building up and up to catastrophe. Fighting for your life every day, trying to make it through one more- but thinking “what’s the point? I’m either gonna die by virus if my stepdad doesn’t end me first!” things were looking bleak. But then someone caught me right before I was about to hit the canvass… And I was like: No, this person is worth surviving for. If not for myself… for her. My reason.

Like you’re starting to think you’re the crazy one? Everyone at school knows you’ve had enough and you’re throwing hands, but the quiet kid suddenly snaps back and he’s the psycho? Y’all made this. Meanwhile you’re getting beaten the piss outta you at home, and everyone in your hometown tells you what a great and upstanding bloke your stepfather is- and they won’t even hear of his misdoings behind closed doors. So it’s all like ohh right? Fr? I just strangled myself then? Wow, I guess I’m crazy fr fr! 🙄 Just imagined all this abuse and torture did i? The way schools let the bullies get away with it as well- feels like I’m Johnny Bravo trying to tell everyone theres a clown on the airplane wing! i must be outta my damn mind. 🤡

Crack your knuckles- it’s another dose of the Trauma Years with your captain Wierd Gaz Yankovic. Things start ramping up here, the violence at home got worse, bullying at school got worse… Running away sure wasn’t working. I found myself getting sent to the principals office even when I was the recipient. Figured if I was going to get suspended anyway I was gonna make sure the punishment matched the crime. If I was gonna get beaten at home for being sent home from school I’d at least wanna do to them what he was gonna do to me… I’m not saying that’s a good thing. But it’s where my mind went… If ur sending me to the electric chair: I get to link a car battery to your pepperonis. And every time I hear the words “zero tolerance bullying policy” I get irrationally angry. You tolerate it, right up until the victim tries to defend themselves. And if I’m getting sent to the principal for blocking my face with a backpack, you have a warped view of what constitutes as bullying. Next time... It’s my turn. Bricks will be in the backpack. And I’m swinging for the bleachers.

This was honestly my favorite zone in Sonic 2 on the SMS The track was a bop and filled me with such motivation and hope… (False hope, but still) Every time I’d make a break for it I felt like Sonic just peeling out and running as far and fast as I could. Course I’d always just end up at my grandparents house or my cousins. One time tho I did actually make it across the county line (but ended up crawling under a fence onto a military base and had to book it like a bandit before I got caught) that was scary enough,and I didn’t know what direction to head in next, and it got dark and cold real quick. I tried tho. God, did I try.

Having secrets is a killer… almost feels like drowning sometimes… So it’s back down into the depths with the Trauma Years of the Wierd Gaz Yankovic sonic song lyrics. And no, sorry to disappoint but the song doesn’t actually tell you the secret… you have to search for the answers in other songs. It’s like an ARG with secret lore you have to dig for if you want the secret. Sorry, I don’t give it up this easily. This is a secret I’ve protected most of my life and often at the cost of my life. Imagine working that hard to protect something just to drop the mic in one easy to decipher lyric. HAH keep sleuthing.

I know the lyrics date this song HARD The Berlin Wall and Marylin Monroe’s relationship are ancient history at this point… No longer relevant But that’s like, how far back I’m going with these songs. This is LORE. The Berlin Wall was still a current topic, and one of the biggest things to happen in my childhood… plus I had just heard this thing about the iconic ms Monroe marrying some super famous baseball player? Idk cos at the time I think I thought he was a tennis player… I wasn’t that knowledgeable about American celebrities. This was more just about me struggling with being in school and trying to focus on my school or homework, it all felt kinda pointless tbh. Things were slowly getting worse at home and secondary school bullying was unlike anything I’d ever experienced. Taking into account that I figured I wouldn’t even live to see my final exams: was there a point in studying? “Running away” this time usually entails me picking a direction that might lead out of town and “chippin’ off” as I would’ve coined at the time (translation: booking’ it, legging it, peeling out) and going only as far as I could get before it got dark and scary… I’d usually make a beeline for grandmas house after that. But I tried… bless my socks (one time the asshole threw me out in just my socks and I walked to the other side of town down back dirt roads around the fields to get to grandmas house cos I was embarrassed to let anyone from school see me in just socks walking down the shopping arcade and have more ammunition to use and bully me for being a peasant) so I ended up at grandmas but usually taking the long way round. Luckily granddad kept my uncle’s old shoes for me to put on, while he made me some oxtail soup and let mum know where I was. I did try to get out… more on my runaway attempts/adventures later.

New Wierd Gaz Yankovic Project Let’s call it “The Trauma Years” by far the hardest chapter of my past to write the lyrics for… So while the other songs were from the before times of playing Sonic at my cousins or Sonic 2 at my friends house- these songs are from the era after that, when I was gifted a hand-me-down Sega MasterSystem and didn’t really have an excuse to wind up across town at a relatives house. So I escaped into this game. And as things got worse at home the lyrics descend deeper into my trauma and crisis as my schoolwork started to enter decline and bullying becomes a daily issue at school. Things just keep getting worse… So understand what I went through just to make these songs again. My lyric books were left behind on the final day I ran away from my stepdad. So they’re mostly transcribed from memory. In order to pull those memories I had to relive them. It’s been a rough week. A lot to unpack here. Thanks to everyone who supports my project. Metal Me 3.0 concludes the robotic transformation trilogy with an anarchistic rebellion against its creators and fighting back against the programs and constructs that keep us subservient. Feeing like I don’t belong or deserve to be here and it would be better or easier if I was dead. Idk but like you talk about that in therapy and they put you on suicide watch. Like fr? How is putting me in a medically sanctioned prison gonna make me feel like I “belong in this world”? It’s a reaction to pain. If you go to the doctor cos someone ran over your foot and they call the cops to take YOUR driving license- WHERE’S the logic? I’m not the one driving like an asshole. Mental healthcare in this country or in general sucks. Just another way they want all square pegs to fit in round holes.
