I Encountered My Biggest Fear in an Abandoned House
On a fairly long road trip to the northern part of Southern Ontario, I was exploring an abandoned house that I have been wanting to visit for several months.
While I was exploring I discovered that I was not alone and I was faced with my greatest fear when it comes to exploring abandoned places.
Watch to find out what it was and what happened!

Discovering The Real Shawshank: Exploring The Ohio State Reformatory
In today's video, we are visiting the Ohio State Reformatory, also known as the Mansfield Reformatory. This is the site of a historic prison located in Mansfield, Ohio, it is also the location where the movie The Shawshank Redemption was filmed.
See my photo gallery:
https://freaktography.com/ohio-state-reformatory-shawshank-redemption-filming-location/
Anyone can visit this facility and book one of several tour options, today my friend Motley Kiwi and I have selected the self-guided tour.
Join us as we tour and explore this historic old prison that opened in 1910
The Ohio State Reformatory was constructed between 1886 and 1910. It was designed by architect Levi T. Scofield in the Richardsonian Romanesque architectural style. The reformatory was built to rehabilitate young, non-violent offenders through education and work programs.
The reformatory was intended to provide a more humane approach to corrections by focusing on reforming inmates rather than subjecting them to harsh punishment. It aimed to teach skills, discipline, and moral values to young offenders, giving them a chance to reintegrate into society upon release.
The reformatory officially opened in 1896 and initially housed male prisoners aged 16 to 30. Inmates were provided with vocational training, including woodworking, farming, and various trades. The reformatory implemented a system of strict discipline and hard work to encourage self-improvement.
Over the years, the reformatory witnessed several significant events. One of the most infamous incidents occurred in 1948 when a major riot broke out, resulting in the death of a correctional officer and the injury of many others. The riot marked a turning point in the reformatory's reputation and led to changes in its administration and practices.
The Ohio State Reformatory closed in 1990 due to court rulings citing inhumane conditions. After its closure, the facility faced an uncertain future. However, thanks to the efforts of preservationists and volunteers, the reformatory was saved from demolition. It gained fame as a filming location for movies, most notably "The Shawshank Redemption," which helped raise public awareness and support for its preservation.
Today, the Ohio State Reformatory operates as a museum and historic site. Visitors can tour the facility, including the cell blocks, administrative areas, and the chapel. The reformatory is known for its unique architecture and offers insights into the history of the penal system and prison life.
The Ohio State Reformatory has become a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors interested in its historical significance, architectural beauty, and its association with popular culture. It stands as a reminder of the criminal justice system's past and evolution.

Would You Enter This Beautiful Abandoned Stone Mansion from 1837/
This old historic abandoned stone mansion is a fresh find that was sent to me by someone who knows the area well and suggested that I check it out.
The now abandoned mansion was built in 1837 for early settlers to the area and was owned/lived in by the same family for over 100 years.
The property sold two years ago for almost $3,000,000 after almost 6 months on the market.

What Happens When a Daycare Center Closes?
Both the church and daycare center on this property were purchased in 2019.
Photo Gallery:
https://freaktography.com/abandoned-daycare-centre/
A property developer is now the current owner of the property and petitioned the city for a zoning amendment in March 2019.
This petition with the city was ongoing until December 2020 leaving the daycare center to rot in the meantime.
The project is currently in the pre-construction phase, there will be a total of 29 residential suites in a 2-stories building.
The estimated date of occupancy for this townhome property is not yet released.
The proposed development consists of 28 new multiple-attached residential dwellings and one new single-detached dwelling.
The application also proposes to convert the existing daycare facility building to a single detached dwelling.
An open house for citizens of the area to express their opinions on the development was held on December 12, 2018, and saw 60 members of the public attend.
There was a delay when a city council meeting on September 9 2019 forced an ultimatum on the developer to solve many problems brought up in the previous open house and from council members or else their project would remain on hold permanently.
They were given until October 3 to come up with solutions to all these problems.
It appears that they either did not meet this deadline OR they did and are currently drawing up development and renovation plans for the daycare and surrounding property.
Either or the daycare will live on it just might not be abandoned for much longer!
Thanks to fellow explorer Rellit N for the research

Why Did They Leave So Much Behind in This Abandoned Nursing Home?
The last post on the Facebook page for this now-abandoned rehab and nursing facility was in early 2016.
My Photo Gallery:
https://freaktography.com/exploring-abandoned-nursing-home-and-rehab-centre/
An online review from a former employee states:
“Every day brings stress, exacerbated by the shortage of employees which burdens others with additional work. The concept of work-life balance seems elusive, as you are repeatedly requested to stay overtime and sacrifice your scheduled days off. The management structure is in constant flux, resulting in a lack of stability and security. However, amidst these challenges, the long-term employees form an exceptional team, always willing to lend a hand and support you in any way they can.”
Another one reads:
"Consistently understaffed, the situation worsens when new hires either quit abruptly or fail to show up for subsequent shifts. Trust is non-existent, as even if you're innocent, you'll likely get blamed for something and thrown under the bus. The absence of a competent management team leads to a lack of respect throughout the organization. Nurses exhibit cutthroat behavior, exploiting staff members without hesitation. The only redeeming aspect in that facility is the presence of the innocent residents, for whom I deeply empathize. What I've learned from that experience is to never subject myself to it again.”
The last review I could find about the services here was in the summer of 2020 and it read:
Flee swiftly and with urgency! It's an absolute scam! They demand upfront payment, which is reasonable, but they adamantly refuse to reimburse the unused days after a patient's demise.
The facility serviced 62 rooms with a total of 75 beds, was built in 1981, renovated in 1999.
There was a court-ordered auction for the property to be sold as is in the spring of 2022 but the action was cancelled following the sale of the property.

Overnight Camping on Flowerpot Island in Tobermory: An Exhilarating Back Country Journey
In this adventure, I travel up to Bruce Peninsula in Ontario Canada, my ultimate destination is 2 nights camping on Flowerpot Island, but first I make a stop at Bruce Peninsula National Park and a quick visit to the Grotto.
Portions of this video were lit using the new Thrunite Archer Pro V2 Flashlight, a high performing but small everyday carry flashlight with a beam as bright as almost 1,000 lumens.
Get yourself this high-performing flashlight that takes up no room at all - for just $24.99
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0BZ47SYWK
If you are lucky enough to book one of the just 6 campsites available, you are able to enjoy the peace and quiet of having the whole island to yourself once the last tour boat leaves.
Photo Gallery:
https://freaktography.com/overnight-back-country-camping-on-flowerpot-island-in-tobermory/
Before you can head to the island you have to visit the Parks Canada visitors center to obtain your permits, from there you head to your ferry office to get your tickets and show them your camping permit. All of this must be booked and taken care of online prior to the day you arrive.
The ferry ride takes roughly 30-45 minutes and along the way, the glass-bottomed boat will take you over several of the shipwrecks found in the water.
Once you arrive on the boat and disembark, the campsites are to the left past the public washrooms.
I arrived mid-afternoon on a Friday and the island was very busy, I spent much of my first day on the island unpacking and setting up. Knowing I would be staying up late shooting timelapse, I took a good nap, alone on my campsite and away from the hoards of tourists.
Once I woke up and had my dinner, it was about time for the final ferries to take the tourists away and it just be me and a lucky few fellow campers on the island for the night.
I set up my camera at the larger flowerpot and left it while I explored the island alone!
After a late night of shooting timelapse videos and taking photos, I retired to my campsite for the night and a quiet peaceful undisturbed sleep
The first tour boat arrives at around 930am and drops off or picks up tourists all day long. On Saturday my goal will be to find a part of the island where there are no people around!
I navigated my way through the masses of tourists, like cockroaches all over the island, except these cockroaches don’t move when a person comes through, I found myself plowing through masses of tourists on my way to escape them.
Finally, sunburnt and tired from hiking, rock climbing and navigating faint foot trails coated with cobwebs and hoping to avoid the ticks and poison ivy, I found myself far away from the baby carriages, hoards of tourists eating out of Costco sized bags of chips while standing on a trail, unruly children and people talking on their cellphones - holding the phone to their face rather than using it like a normal phone. Who are these people and why do they act this way?
I enjoyed a few hours alone on a rock, listening to the waves as the lapped the rocks below, the bright blue sky and the sun on my skin!
On Saturday night the last ferry left at around 730, which I was not prepared for as I thought I would be alone by 6pm, so I end up shooting a daytime timelapse sequence at the large flowerpot while the island is still full of people.
I had enough, after 30 minutes of the same two men taking photos of each other right beside me, literally right beside me - one of them had to apologize as he kicked my leg getting himself in position for his 500th selfie in the same place, I made my way to the lighthouse area and finally at 730pm I was alone to enjoy the summer breeze of the lake and watch the sunset.
By the time I got to the lighthouse area, the people were gone within 30 minutes and for the rest of the night, I only saw 2 other people - a young couple who camping a few sites beside me.
I enjoyed the silence, time lapsing the setting sun over the hazy orange sky, burnt from the many first fires all over the country. I then moved on to sit by the flowerpots and watched as the Milky Way appeared brightly over Georgian Bay.
After enjoying a quiet Saturday night with only 4 other people on the island, I decided to get up early, pack my things and take one of the first ferries off the island. My trip was not scheduled until 1:34, but since no one is leaving the island in the morning there was plenty of room to accommodate me.
The trip back is direct with no stops, you are able to just enjoy the ride.
I personally will not do this trip again as I found the island to be far too busy during the day and it was not the experience I was hoping for, while the nights were calm and peaceful, there are no other trails or accessible parts of the island to escape to during the day.
That said, I did enjoy the experience, the sights, the scenery and the landscape of flowerpot island!
Thank you to Parks Canada and Bruce Anchor Tours for the Hospitality!

In 1998 Hallelujah Acres opened a second headquarters in Canada to serve its growing market north of the border. This building served as the headquarters and was run by a woman named Judy, who passed away in 2019.
