Police Seize Gang Whose Methods Included Smuggling Cocaine In Frozen Pineapple Pulp
Cocaine and cannabis worth a whopping EUR 165 million (GBP 144 million) have been seized in a raid on a drug trafficking gang whose smuggling methods included hiding it in pineapple pulp.
Police in Spain and Poland that carried out the raids say the chain began in Morocco and South America, with the drugs being trafficked to Poland and that 12 members of the "high-risk" drugs ring were arrested
Once in Poland, fleets of Polish truckers transported the contraband to Spain, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
One of the suspects arrested in the raids on 28th March is believed to have masterminded the trafficking of cocaine in barrels of frozen pineapple pulp that were found in 2020.
Europol - which helped coordinate the raids - said in a statement obtained by Newsflash: "A high-risk criminal network consisting of different organised crime groups responsible for smuggling drugs from Morocco and South America and setting up a wholesale distribution network has been disrupted.
"Polish citizens residing in Spain or working as drivers in Polish transport companies were the main actors."
They added: "Among the detainees is a man suspected of organising the smuggling of 3.2 tonnes [7,054 lbs] of cocaine in 2020.
"The cocaine was found in barrels containing frozen pineapple pulp."
Police seized more than 2.2 tonnes (4,850 lbs) of marijuana, 8.7 tonnes (19,180 lbs) of hashish, and 942 kilogrammes (2,076 lbs) of cocaine in the raids.

Four Injured After Giant Sinkhole Filled With Boiling Water Swallows Up Car With Children Onboard
A car with two children onboard was swallowed up in a sinkhole filled with boiling-hot water when a pipe burst suddenly, causing the ground to collapse underneath the vehicle.
Four people were reportedly injured, including one of the two kids riding in the car, when the ground opened up on Drovyanaya Street, in St. Petersburg, Russia, on 5th April.
Many Russian cities have giant central heating plants that send superheated water to housing estates, and burst pipes among the ageing infrastructure are not uncommon in the country.
The driver and his 10-year-old son suffered burns and were sent to hospital, while the other child was reportedly unharmed.
Two employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations who rushed to the family's rescue were also hospitalised with burns.
One of them was moved to intensive care with burns on over 30 per cent of his body, local media said.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations said in a statement obtained by Newsflash: "Both rescuers were sent to hospital with burns to their lower extremities."
Phone footage filmed by unnamed witnesses shows the white SUV has been swallowed up whole by the sinkhole that is still letting off steam.
Emergency crews can be seen gathered on the side, seemingly waiting for the heat the subside before they can salvage the vehicle.
According to local reports, the giant sinkhole opened up after the hot water pipe ruptured and caused the soil and asphalt to collapse inwards.
A total of 31 emergency personnel and 11 units of special equipment are reportedly handling the massive cleanup operation.
The street has been temporarily closed off to traffic.
The Prosecutors' Office of St Petersburg said in a statement Newsflash obtained: "The prosecutor's office of the Admiralteisky district organised an inspection into the fact of a pipeline rupture at house 4 on Drovyanaya Street, operated by St. Petersburg Heating Network JSC.
"Currently, measures are being taken to clear up the site of the accident, while the causes of the breakthrough are being investigated.
"Employees of the prosecutor's office of the Admiralteisky district left for the place to coordinate the actions of emergency services and control over the elimination of the consequences of the incident."

ANCIENT FASHION: Small Sea Snail Shells Were Used As Jewellery 45,000 Years Ago
Sea snail shells discovered during excavation work in Lebanon had been taken there to be used as jewellery some 45,000 years ago.
The fact that the items were so used was confirmed by Dr Marjolein D. Bosch from the Archaeological Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) and her team in a paper published in March.
They revealed that during the excavation work at the Early Upper Palaeolithic archaeological site Ksar Akil, in Lebanon, they discovered more than 400 shell pieces of the species Columbella rustica that had been intentionally pierced to make jewellery.
Bosch said in a statement obtained by Newsflash: "This purpose (to create jewellery) has been suspected for a long time, and I wanted to investigate it, and prove it scientifically."
To do so, Bosch collected the shells of the Columbella adansoni species - similar to the ones found in Lebanon - from the coast of Tenerife in Spain.
The collected items reportedly shared the same general distribution pattern of shell thickness needed for the study.
Bosch explained: "First, pristine shells were scanned for robust and fragile zones using micro-CT scans.
"We then made 3D models of the shells, which showed the exact structure of the different mussels, i.e. where they were thinner or thicker.
"In the housings I collected from the Spanish beach, the vast majority of the perforations occurred in structurally weak zones.
"In contrast, in our archaeological finds, we found a higher frequency of perforations in more robust zones and a higher uniformity in their location, size and shape."
This - according to the scientist - showed that the Columbella rustica pieces were intentionally picked and perforated in order to be stringed onto a necklace or attached to clothes.
Bosch said: "These snails are too small to eat, so they were collected and brought to the site for other reasons.
"In addition, the standardisation of perforation shape, size and distribution points to a formalized manufacturing processes."
Explaining what they were used for, the scientist added: "Since these served no purpose, such as subsistence or tool use, we assume they were 'symbolic."
The study was published in the peer-reviewed academic journal 'Journal of Archaeological Science' in March 2023.

VLAD'S YOUR LOT: Embargo-Busting Russian Arms Traffickers Arrested
Russian and Ukrainian nationals accused of weapons trafficking to Moscow have been seized by the police in Spain.
The two suspects were said to be sending aircraft parts to Russia that are banned under sanctions against the country's invasion of Ukraine.
International embargoes prevent the sale of weapons or spare parts that could help the Russian military.
But the police in the province of Guipuzcoa, in northern Spain, arrested the pair - a man and a woman - as they were about to send a shipment of glass used in military plane cockpits.
The police said one of the pair is the head of a sanctions-busting organisation dedicated to trafficking military equipment to the Kremlin.
Footage of one arrest shows a woman being led away in handcuffs by masked Spanish police officers and put inside a patrol car.
A statement obtained from Spain's Ministry of the Interior by Newsflash on Tuesday, 4th April, said: "One of the detainees is said to be the head of an international business network directed from Spain and dedicated to the illicit trafficking of defence material."
They added: "Two people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a crime of smuggling defence material destined for Russia."
The pair, it emerged, ran a front company supplying aeronautical spares to legitimate clients to hide their dealings with Russia.
Interior Ministry officials say the pair had been under investigation since 2021, months ahead of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
An EU arms embargo against Russia has been in place since 2014, following the Kremlin's annexation of Crimea.
They accused the suspects of "running a supply chain of military aeronautical material from a Spanish company, evading the controls established by current legislation in that material and, therefore, committing a crime of smuggling."
Their statement continued: "In the current scenario of war in Ukraine, the supply chains of the Russian military industry have been seriously damaged by the application of Council Regulation (EU) 833/2014, regarding restrictive measures motivated by Russian actions that destabilise the situation in Ukraine and its subsequent reinforcement as a result of the Russian invasion of February 2022.
"The framework on which intervention has been made was designed for the supply of military equipment in the aeronautical sector. The operation was triggered in an attempt to prevent the imminent departure from European territory of a shipment of glass for military aircraft cockpits."
The National Police said they had searched two houses as part of their raid and seized two high-end vehicles.
The suspects, who have not been named, have been remanded in custody pending the outcome of the investigation.

Police Rescue Migrants Forced Into Prostitution By Drugs Gang
Police in Spain have rescued 20 migrants forced into prostitution by a drugs gang in the British holiday hotspot Marbella.
The women - mostly from South America - were lured to southern Spain with the offer of well-paid jobs, according to the police.
But when they arrived, they were forced to have "marathon" sex sessions with clients and sell them drugs, watched every minute by spy cameras.
The Spanish National Police said they had arrested 34 human trafficking suspects in a series of 14 coordinated raids around the Costa del Sol area.
A police video of one of the raids on a brothel shows some of the women being interviewed.
And officers can be seen counting wads of banknotes, including fistfuls of British currency.
Newsflash obtained a statement from the Spanish National Police on Tuesday, 4th April, saying: "The victims were controlled with a hidden system of recording cameras."
The statement continued: "The organisation forced the women to prostitute themselves during marathon days, being subjected to strong surveillance and also forced them to sell drugs among the clients."
The police said they had carried out 14 raids in Malaga, the Malaga towns of Marbella and Estepona, and the city of Algeciras in Cadiz.
They seized EUR 82,000 (GBP 72,000) in cash, 600 grammes of hashish, several doses of cocaine, a stolen vehicle, weapons, recording cameras and forged documents.
The operation - dubbed 'Muralla', or 'Wall' - began in 2021, with the authorities discovering that the trafficking gang recruited "women in vulnerable situations, in order to exploit them for work and sexually."
The authorities said that many of the victims were from Colombia and had been tricked into coming to Spain.
Then they were forced to work off 'their debt' to the gang by selling sex and drugs and had to be available to clients 24 hours a day, according to the authorities.
The police said that the network hid behind a series of front businesses to hide their activities, including "several vehicle repair and scrapping businesses located between Malaga and Algeciras."
