Episode 38 Personal Growth in the Age of Instant Gratification: Finding Identity and Meaning
Is your identity largely shaped by the responsibilities you shoulder and the meaning you find in life? I dissect this thought-provoking question in this episode. I venture into the world of finding self-worth and finding meaning in life, not through instant gratification, but by embracing the challenges that come with responsibility. I also discuss the roles of faith, community, and service in forging our identities.
I also shine a light on the current state of our universities that often stifle differing opinions. I believe the art of having difficult conversations and challenging our beliefs is pivotal in our growth as individuals. In our digital age that often reinforces our existing views, it's even more critical than ever to seek out different opinions and have challenging discussions.
I also explore how taking ownership of our lives shapes our identity, contributes to our mental health, and brings meaning to our existence.

Episode 26 Embracing Fear: A Road Trip to Success Through Failure and Perception
Fancy a road trip with fear? That's the intriguing concept I share with you this week, courtesy of Elizabeth Gilbert's enlightening book, Big Magic. Join me as I unpack this unique strategy of viewing fear as a companion rather than a roadblock on our personal journeys. We'll delve into understanding fear as a necessary element of our experiences, but not one that should take the wheel and control our actions.
Our beliefs and perception can powerfully shape our experiences, especially when it involves fear of failure. Let's discuss how we can navigate this fear, paralleling a baby’s journey to learn to walk and the path to success. Yes, failure might make one or many appearances, but it's merely a stepping stone and a learning experience, not the end.
I'll also share an intriguing study highlighting the impact of perception and discrimination, in my continuing goal to bring your attention to how powerful your thoughts and narrative can be in how you life experience life.

Episode 23 Rediscovering Myself: A Journey Through Grief, Connection, and Personal Growth
I forgot how to be me!
Ever found yourself lost in transition, grappling with the question, "Who am I?" I will take you on my personal journey of self-discovery, triggered in the wake of the loss of my mother, financial trials, and profound grief. Inspired by Ren Gill's poignant song, 'How to Be Me,' I'll reveal how an important part of rediscovering myself included seeing my reflection in the eyes of some of my oldest friends, who reminded me of my past self and the impact I'd had on them.
What role does connection play in our journey of self-discovery? I explore this in my own life and how helpful it has been in helping me learn "how to be me" again, a new, more weathered and wise version of me!
In connecting with others, we can gain fresh perspectives and a reminder of our value as human beings. I also discuss how growth can happen from dark places and being stuck in the mud, reflecting on how personal insights often come wrapped in discomfort and challenge.

Episode 22 Reframing Food Addiction: The power of narrative and language in our eating behaviours
What if the narrative you've been fed about food addiction is not only incorrect but detrimental to your health? Join me, as I unpack this contentious term and substitute it with a more useful one - habituation. This episode ventures into the heart of why we can't simply abstain from food, and what physical and emotional triggers lead to food habituation. Whether it's nutrient deficiencies, irregular sleep habits, bacterial imbalances or managing emotions, I discuss them all!
Switching gears, I delve into the impact of language on our eating habits. The words we use can influence how we perceive our relationship with food, and our body.
I discuss our stories and our language, emphasising that our behaviors do not define who we are. Let's learn how a simple shift in our vocabulary can reduce stress hormones and foster a healthier relationship with food. Drawing insights from my studies at the Institute for the Psychology of Eating with Marc David, this episode is set to change your outlook on food and help you understand that our behaviour offers useful information about imbalances in our life and health.

Episode 21 Exploring Perception, Personal Narratives, and the Art of Creating Opportunities
Something I have noticed is that we see what we are looking for!
Our emotions can paint a different picture of the world, and we can easily mistake these narratives for reality. Borrowing from a stirring TED Talk by Guy Winch and the song People are Strange by The Doors, I discuss the influence of perception.
One of the secrets to success is to not immediately take everything personally, to take a moment to see that the other person is usually caught up in their own stuff, it is rarely about you!
If you look for evidence of kindness, beauty and opportunities in the world, that is what you will find. If you look for evidence that everyone and everything is stacked up against you; that is what you will find. I'm not saying there is nothing bad or negative in the world, of course there is, however that is not the whole picture. It is important to look at the whole picture and see what is good in the world. We all have a confirmation bias, where we only look for confirmation of what we already believe to be true (and social media delivers), what is it that you believe and how is it showing up in your life?
So, gear up for a deep-dive into the realm of perception, personal narratives, and the art of creating opportunities. Remember, the stories we tell ourselves can shape our experiences, and we have the power to write them.

Episode 20 Navigating Social Media, Mental Health, and Social Connections
This episode was inspired by this quote “mental health is the harmonious balancing of a network of relationships to yourself but also to other people.” Jordan Peterson, Psychologist
I discuss our relationship with smart devices and social media and how social media algorithms might be shaping us into isolated individuals, lost in echo chambers of agreement. I explain how this can disrupt our connections and our mental health, as the addictive dopamine rush of online activities increasingly influences our lives.
I also discuss how social distancing has contributed to our grappling with the challenges of fostering effective social interactions and developing our sense of self.
Coming out on the other side of lock-downs; it is important for us to reaffirm of the power of human connection and the importance of finding your tribe. This episode is an exploration of what harmonious balancing looks like and how to support good mental health.

Episode 19 Rewriting the Narrative of Failure and Success: my chat with Ohad Rein
Ever pondered on the so-called "losers" who get ignored for the glitz and glamour of the winners' spotlight? It’s time to rewrite the narrative of success and failure with our guest, Ohad Rein, you may know him from his music as Old Man River.
Inspired by a recent Facebook post from Ohad, I reached out to him and invited him to have this discussion. We journey together beginning with the inspiring story of Pete Best, the overlooked fifth Beatle, whose tale of resilience and self-identity is a testament to the powerful courage that lies within the shadows of perceived failure.
Ohad brings a fresh perspective, challenging the conventional norms of measuring success in our society. Oftentimes, we are so caught up in the illusion of success painted by social media that we forget the essence of true success. Ohad directs our attention to Leonard Cohen's profound statement that "success is survival," sparking a deep conversation about the role of relationships in our personal growth. We also delve into Ohad's personal story of redefining success in his own musical journey.
Finally, we dive deep into the profound concept of finding meaning in life. Drawing inspiration from the enlightening stories of Viktor Frankl and Edith Eger, we explore the power of acceptance and the importance of finding perspective. We close with a gentle invitation for you, the listener, to trust the present moment, accept your emotions, and to choose how you respond and find meaning in life. Join us in this inspiring conversation, and let’s redefine success together.
