This is a must for anyone interested in improving their pistol and carbine skills, even if transitioning from a carbine to a pistol seems like a remote possibility to a civilian, you should be paying attention. This drill isn’t just for operators. Within this drill you are manipulating the safety, bolt release, and mag release on your carbine. You are also learning to manipulate your carbine on a sling, and doing a combat reload from your belt or chest rig. And that’s just for the carbine. On the pistol side you are drawing under stress, engaging a target with added equipment (how often do your shoot your pistol with your carbine on a sling in front of you or on your side. And finally, you are learning to properly re-holster your pistol in the middle of not at the end of a drill. This forces you to manage your attention while still safely re-holstering (that means looking at the holster).
For the self defense oriented gun owner this is a high yield drill. It’s also not for the beginner. You should not attempt this drill until you have achieved competency of all these components by themselves. Once you gain competency at these components in a isolated setting your skills and speed will hit a wall. Bringing in a drill like this will allow you to push to the next level of competency and fluidity. Don’t do this drill to look cool for your buddies. Do this drill to gain that surgical precision with your weapons manipulations.

Speed vs Accuracy in a Gun Fight | Self Defense | FightFast
Combat shooting requires both speed and accuracy. In a real life self defense situation when you are shooting and the attacker is shooting back (or charging you with a knife) you will have to be both fast and accurate. So it's critical you learn to balance these factors.
Once you reach a basic level of marksmanship competency with your handgun, shooting a tight group very slowly should be no problem and 5-10 yards. You must start there. Then it's your job to constantly push yourself to be faster, without sacrificing accuracy that will diminish your effectiveness in a gunfight.
In this video, Military and Government Special Operations Veteran Joe Teti visually demonstrates what this will look like on your targets. You want to push your skills to achieve as fast of a rate of fire as you can while maintaining an acceptable group size. What is an acceptable group size? Watch the video to see. Bottom line, if your target looks too pretty, you aren't pushing yourself.
As former Green Beret and Delta Force Operator Dale Comstock points out toward the end of the video, if you are struggling with improving your speed, you may need to reorient your focus onto the front sight of your gun. It's a very common problem for intermediate shooters to focus on the target. You can shoot really well in a slow controlled manner this way, but you will never be able to shoot fast until you learn to focus on the front sight.

This kind of takedown is much better than a rear chokehold. The problem with a rear choke or other restraining move from behind is that you can still be attacked with a weapon, fall to your back, or be thrown around by a larger aggressor. The self defense move in this video allows you to escape very quickly and does not put you in contact with the aggressor any longer than necessary.

Here are some tips to help you stay safe while at a hotel:

Clandestine communication has two purposes. Communicating something in "code", and ways to communicate when normal means (cell phones, landlines, email) are unavailable. When traveling abroad or even when at home having the ability to signal extreme danger to your family is important.
In this example Military and Government Special Operations Veteran Joe Teti and former Green Beret and Delta Force Operator Dale Comstock use a hotel or travel situation to illustrate this point. There could be a situation while traveling where one member of the party recognizes an extreme danger and needs to indicate to the rest of the group to meet at a predetermined location (rendezvous point), or leave the country immediately by going to the airport by whatever means necessary.
At home this could mean abandoning your home in a post crisis or disaster situation. Setting up a "turn around immediately and meet at the rendezvous location" signal is a critical piece of your overall crisis survival strategy. This could be a piece of duct tape across your front door, or mailbox. It will look odd but will mean nothing to anyone but your and your family.
Communication is critical in self defense and survival situations as is having a prepared plan of action for certain disasters or crisis situations. Keep clandestine communication in mind when you develop your plans.

Defeat the Thai Kick (This Works) | Counter Moves | Self Defense Technique | FightFast
If you are in a street fight or other self-defense situation and your attacker is throwing kicks, it's usually a bad sign. The vast majority of fights never include a kick until someone is on the ground. Kicking is not a default or instinctive reaction during stand up fight. So if an attacker is kicking it means he has training.
Unfortunately for you, you don't get to choose your attacker. So you need to know how to deal with a trained fighter in a street fight as part of your self-defense training. The good news is, blocking or avoiding many different kicks is quite simple.
In this clip, Thai Kick Boxing instructor Mike Goldbach shows you a very easy and effective way to take the power out of the dreaded Thai kick. A skilled Thai Kickboxer can break the femur of an unwitting opponent. After watching and training the technique in this video that won't be you. You must take the power out of the kick by leaning the attacker out and stopping his rotation. This has the added benefit of stopping a follow up kick.
Do yourself a favor, study this lesson and give it some practice with a training partner. You don't want to be up against a trained fighter in a street fight, but armed with some simple skills you can still defend yourself and take away their advantage. A trained fighter who preys on innocent people will not be expecting you to counter his attacks. And you need to know these techniques to round out your self defense training.

Gross Counter Attack | Triangle Block | Self Defense Technique | FightFast
The problem with blocks is... they aren't attacks. You will never win a street fight or prevail in a self defense situation with blocks alone. And unless you are a very highly trained marital artist with tons of time to practice, the fancy looking blocks, parries, and counterstrikes you see in the movies won't work. In this video lesson John Nottingham shows you the simplicity of a triangle block that is both block and an attack. Once you see it you will understand why it's such a great self defense tool. It's a gross motor skill, it uses your entire body so it works for smaller people (remember you will almost certainly be attacked by a larger stronger attacker, so even if you are a 5'11" and 180lbs you'll still be "small" compared to your attacker) and when driven into the face or neck is a devastating strike.
Does this self defense technique look cool? No. But it will put an attacker onto his backside in a real life street fight. If you want to look 'cool' in a fight just know there is a good chance you'll end up unconscious on the blacktop. Learning simplified self defense techniques like this one, and you'll survive and win street fights.

Great street fighters understand range and distance because it's the difference between winning and losing a fight. On the street there are no weight classes, you will most likely be attacked by a person larger than you. That means there will be a fighting range that is best for your attacker (gives him the advantage) and a fighting range that is better for you (takes some of his advantage away). In this video Bob Taylor demonstrates how big of a difference range makes on a large man's power.
When fighting a larger man in a self defense situation, you don't want to be standing at the end of his punching range, that's where he has max power. Even worse, you couldn't hit him if you wanted to when you stand right at his power range. You need to stay outside that range, or close the distance so he is inside your punching range.
You won't understand fighting ranges unless you spar with people of different heights. So if you are serious about self defense you need to find people to practice with, and if that's not an option at least understand YOUR power range by practicing on a heavy back or padded tree.
