VW Sweep indicator fitted to 2008 Sharan MPV
Just a quickie to show the replacement indicators that I've just fitted to the County Durham Foodbank's VW Sharan pool car (or ad-hoc delivery van with windows...).
Car: VW Sharan SE 140 2.0TDi, 2008MY. Originally fitted with clear/silver indicators that have a single bright orange LED at the outer end. Passenger side (UK) had failed in an odd way (was only working very faintly), most likey due to a little bit of water getting past a damaged seal on the outermost end of the unit.
Voltages at the connector plug in the door mirror were okay, though that side had a slightly flaky connection, which I tightened up, but that took several goes to make sure the spade connectors both went securely into the sockets.
New units are smoked glass so the mirror looks black all the width across the lower edge, but more obvious tthat the originals.
The price varies, but for about £14-15 for the pair, plus a T10 Torx key and plastic panel pry bar, they have to be worth a go! If you want to see if they fit your VW, here's the link: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284476761985

Famous Places number 42, James May Bay and Honourable Bus Stop, Lake Kawaguchi, looking to Mt. Fuji.
After extensive research comparing video from the outstanding "James May: Our Man in Japan" (available on Amazon Prime) with maps and street view (Google, Bing, OSM), my son (also James) is certain that we found the spot where a bus intruded across back of shot as James (May, that is) was having an epiphany about Life, the Universe, and Everything to do with Mt. Fuji, coming to realise that Japan's friendly neighbourhood stratovolcano was so much more than "basically a triangle"...
In the absence of a handy blue plaque, and in the presence of much water covering the shingle beach, we were unable to place a memorial on the very spot where James (still May) crafted his masterpiece. However, James (my son) and I made this short video to commemorate the occasion.

Mt Fuji - half way up and already higher than Ben Nevis - a challenge to Keely...😁
So, today James and I ascended Mount Fuji ... half way. Still, it's an impressive 2060m altitude at this point.
This is more a message of support for Keely of @ChapterByChapterVlog, facing off the upcoming walk up Ben Nevis. C'mon, if this old geezer can do it, so can you!!
{note to production team - before uploading, please make sure you edit out the bus station that crept into shot when James panned across. Also, overdub my deliberate mispronunciation of Fujikawaguchiko...}
New legs, please, umpire! Tomorrow we walk to the lakeside beach where James May painted his version of Fujisan, and got in a mild fracas about a bus driving through the shot on the road behind him...😁

AI drivers - pushy, much?
The AI traffic in SCS Software's ATS has trouble seeing other vehicles.
Otherwise, how would you explain this...?!
Service brake, parking brake, even reversing back - nothing stopped this AI driver from trying to go through me...

AI shunts #2
If the AI traffic in SCS Software's ETS2 isn't just crashing into everything around it, there's this 'Star Trek' tendancy to materialise right under other vehicles.
Here's another example of the in-game traffic's seemingly unending playlist of 'Ways to Fail to Proceed' ...

ATS - Three too easy? Try SEVEN trailers to Thompson Falls...
Now, if you've seen my last video, you will see that *only* hauling three trailers (fully-loaded, though), was a breeze. I even mention I'd seen another driver take five trailers around that 'secret' off-road trail to Thompson Falls in SCS Software's latest Montana DLC.
So, I thought I'd go bigger this time.
Same route, same truck, just more trailers! Seven, to be precise, in a set that is over 210ft (roughly 65m).
The game doesn't really know what to do with these sort of things, so the trailer had already picked up 15% of damage just sitting at the repair bay - they clip in to all sorts of things (even if only *allocated* to the truck and not actually hooked up). It's hilarious seeing the game try to fit them into regular depots!
I hope you enjoy this one!

ATS - Triple trailers to Thompson Falls - the scenic route
By now, the 'hidden road' through the hills to Thompson Falls in SCS Software's recent Montana map expansion to American Truck Simulator has become a busy, well-travelled route.
But when did that stop any of us trying to take some silly-sized cargo or road-train rigs along it - I've even seen one driver with a 5-trailer precession snaking deftly around those cliff-edge trails!
So, in this video, whilst my friend Jürgen (www.twitch.tv/kheyar3) practically sprints around blind bends with his single box trailer, I follow at more of a trundle with my triple and roughly 17 tons more cargo. I only pick up one small knock of 1% damage from a roadside rock, whilst trying to drive as I floated some distance outside the cab to get a better view of the truck on video.
I hope you enjoy this one!

ATS - Hauling a Volvo Tipper through the mountain route to Thompson Falls
@SCS Software recently tweeted a challenge - what's the biggest cargo that someone has taken across their new twisty off-road trail challenge to ThompsonFalls in the latest Montana map DLC.
I like those sorts of challenges - it doesn't say "HAUL HVY" on my truck license plate for laughs, you know!
So, I found a freight job to take an articulated Volvo tipper weighing 22t on a triple-bogey trailer setup - no chance or reversing out of trouble if any came my way - and set off. The whole rig weight 44t and was somewhere between 50ft and a bazillion miles long.
Along the way, I change gearboxes and also give the Sun a shove forward a few hours to give everyone a better view. Not only of the trail, but also the new mountain goat plushie on the passenger seat - another secret-ish Montana bonus!

American Truck Simulator: Crossing the Texan border - what lies in store? #shorts
This short shows just a few of the highlights of the 3-episode mini-series I've made exploring the current bits of the Lone Star State in @SCS Software's #americantrucksimulator
Now, big disclaimer, the DLC is not actually out, and I'm not claiming special access to it. These bits are already in the game map, as of version 1.45. They may be removed, or may be changed before the final DLC lands.
I was wanting to get the map back to 100%, and the few dots of grey on the Texas side of the state line had to be driven over to get back to that magic total.
There is a surprisingly high level of accuracy in some parts, as you'll see (especially if you watch the full video series). There are also some bits that will definitely not make final release, as some are developer artifacts to see if the game will work, and others are, erm, more as sign that someone needs to lay off the Red Bull and just get some sleep...!

Texas DLC?? A sneaky look over the state line - part 3
So, now ATS 1.45 has been set free, what do we see on the map?
After driving some new Texan scenery to tag all those fragments in Parts 1 and 2, I was STILL only on 99.99%! Well, one more piece to try, south of Las Cruces, NM...
Discovering that parts of El Paso, TX had been reproduced accurately was great to see - anyone who knows El Paso should recognise them in-game, but just in case you don't I tagged in a couple of brief Google Maps/Street View images to prove it!
I hope this little 3-parter series has given you an insight into the things we can expect when the Texas DLC officially hits the store!

ATS - Texas DLC?? A sneaky look over the state line - part 2 of 3
So, now ATS 1.45 has been set free, what do we see on the map?
In Part 1 I went east of Hobbs and found Seminole.
In this second part of our Texan Tour, I start south-west of Carlsbad, NM, at a point somewhere on US-62 in the countryside of Hudspeth County, TX. The drive back to Carlsbad reveals some interesting highlights, some very accurate reproductions of real life, and a few that I really hope are not anything like reality...
Join me on this drive past Guadelupe Peak and the Carlsbad Caverns!
And I only needed to do this because all of those bits might help me get back to 100% of the ATS map driven.

ATS - Texas DLC?? A sneaky look over the state line - part 1 of 3
So, now ATS 1.45 has been set free, what do we see on the map?
Yes, the road through Cody, and a few random junctions here and there. But what about the edges? We've got new map expansion DLCs on the way - could there possibly be anything to see in them already??
Well, yes. In this video I visit a rest stop that was floating off in Texas somewhere north-east of Hobbs, NM on the road from Seminole, TX and Seagraves, TX (by my reckoning at least). Then I drive back along Route 62 back towards Hobbs before finishing this first of three episodes taking a sneaky look at what lies in store.
And I only needed to do this because all of those bits helped me get back to 100% of map driven.

ETS2 - Crossing France on a Vespa in one game day
Here on the channel that likes to answer questions only the brave or foolhardy dare to even think, our next gem of consumer advice awaits you, dear viewer!
In this epic journey we will find out if it is possible to cross France from Strasbourg near the German border in the east to Brest, sticking far out west into the north Atlantic ocean in just one (game) day.
On a Vespa scooter...
Well, as near to a Vespa as you can currently find in the mod workshops supporting SCS Software's Euro Truck Simulator 2. In this case it's the nattily-named "Faggio", a mod by Marin (link below).
The main problem is range - and you thought it was just something that the popular media outlets would have you believe only EV drivers worried about! The route needs to pass as many fuel stations as possible because this little step-through twist'n'go scooter actually has 150hp and a real gearbox - plus something roughly the capacity of a large hat for a fuel tank.
Welcome to the ETS2 Tour of French Fuel Stations, with some scenery in between...!

Pulling an artic trailer - with a Vespa scooter #shorts
There are many burning questions in life, but this is the one I've chosen to answer here, using a workshop mod for SCS Software's Euro Truck Simulator 2...
Most vehicle mods actually still include the ability to hook up any in-game trailer that you have in your virtual garage. Handily, this little 'Wasp-ish' scooter was given a 150hp engine, instead of the usual 5 or so.
Ground clearance can be an issue, as you might guess from the angle of the trailer floor, and the very short wheelbase of a typical twist'n'go step-through scooter makes it tricky in the corners, but this little experiment proves that it is possible. I just dread to think where exactly the fifth wheel is in all this...

Freightliner Cascadia with Detroit Diesel 12V 71T 630 engine pt2 #shorts
Fancy swapping out the engine of your standard truck in SCS Software's American Truck Simulator?
Here's part 2/2 letting you hear what a modern Freightline Cascadia sounds like when fitted with a Detroit Diesel 12V-71T making 630hp.
My father worked at a garage where their truck recovery, erm, truck had this same engine, and it rattled the building whenever it was started. The 'revvy' idle is normal - this is a 2-stroke diesel, and it loves to visit the top-end of the range. In fact, with the same Eaton 18sp gearbox as the previous #shorts video (in that one using a CAT 3408), the 12v-71T normally drives a gear below the big V8s - it doesn't even think of changing up to 18th until the truck is going over about 75mph, whereas the V8s are already there by 65-ish...
Check out the mod link for the other engines that are included.

Freightliner Cascadia with Detroit Diesel 12V 71T 630 engine pt1 #shorts
Fancy swapping out the engine of your standard truck in SCS Software's American Truck Simulator?
Here's part 1/2 letting you hear what a modern Freightline Cascadia sounds like when fitted with a Detroit Diesel 12V-71T making 630hp.
My father worked at a garage where their truck recovery, erm, truck had this same engine, and it rattled the building whenever it was started. The 'revvy' idle is normal - this is a 2-stroke diesel, and it loves to visit the top-end of the range. In fact, with the same Eaton 18sp gearbox as the previous ~shorts video (in that one using a CAT 3408), the 12v-71T normally drives a gear below the big V8s - it doesn't even think of changing up to 18th until the truck is going over about 75mph, whereas the V8s are already there by 65-ish...
Check out the mod link for the other engines that are included.

ETS2 - Off-roading in style: Scania Paradiso G7 1800 DD out on the trails
Well, here's the answer to the burning question "Can you off-road in a huge 8x2 double-decker luxury coach?"
In this video I drive the amazing Scania Paradiso G7 1800 15M DD coach along the twistiest, turniest, bumpiest, rock-strewn and partly flooded coastal trail in the Utopia standalone map for SCS Software's Euro Truck Simulator 2.
Tips on tyre choice, choosing the right gearbox, how to make best use of different camera views, and how to clean up after the passengers probably lose their collective breakfasts - all these and more are offered along the way!
It's mostly scratch-free, too, which is amazing given the size of The Big Bus...
Chapters:
00:00 - Channel intro for ETS2, welcome back, and intro to the challenge
00:52 - We're off! Easy going at first...
02:12 - The automatic gearbox isn't happy...
03:40 - Switching to sequential manual gears - no garage needed!
04:49 - "Get yer skates on, mate": The self-preservation society?
05:12 - "Lovely old tree"
06:43 - "Oh, bump!"
07:40 - Rock'n'Roll! Won't somebody think of the passengers...?
09:21 - Excellent mirrors
10:37 - Landscape painting: any colour so long as it's on my coach...
12:42 - House of Wombat
13:47 - Sway away! The outside view, and why you should always pay extra for First Class seats...
15:12 - Outside view, and a memorial for earthquake victims
16:23 - A bit more tyre chat
18:02 - I hope you can feel the power!
18:45 - Riding on glass through the wheel washer
19:15 - More info on the earthquake
20:40 - Destination ahead, time to mop up?
20:56 - Outro

ETS2 - Driving the Tauern Highway to Großglöckner Hochalpenstraß
Well, this is the first of a small collection of videos detailing some new parts to the ETS2 map with the Austria rework, added by SCS Software with e the 1.44 update.
There are many impressive sections to this newly updated region, but probably the most iconic is the Großglöckner Hochalpenstraß, or the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, one of the highest passes in the Alps. Normally closed to commercial traffic, I picked my strongest truck and, throwing caution to the wind, whacked an "I identify as a Porsche" sticker on the front, ignored the warning and drove it anyway.
Thankfully, it was summer in game, otherwise this road would have been closed...

Chapters:

02:00 - Entering the Park, claiming I'm driving a bus, and going through the toll gate
03:44 - Driving outside the cab to to see the scenery ahead
07:35 - Reaching the rest stop at the top - anyone else curious where the road behind those barriers goes...?
08:39 - There's a viewpoint here - let's play the cutscene!
10:20 - Cutscene over - time to carry on down the other side
14:40 - A sweeping view from outside the cab as the truck goes around another hairpin bend
15:00 - Let's pull over to give the cars a chance to pass (sounds better than "went off the road a bit", doesn't it?!)
17:10 - Passing the toll gate on the way out of the park
20:16 - One of my in-game drivers parked up by the roadside, just inside the Park boundary

ETS2 - Free miles! Finding shortcuts that give you more back than you drive...
We're all busy, and sometimes it pays to find a way to get the job done quickly. If that quicker way still pays the same as before, then it's a bonus!
In this video I take you on a 379-mile journey, but finish it after only driving 191-miles. The cargo got to the destination, the driver still gets paid for the full job, but the truck drives around half the distance. Careful planning saves the time in real life that those extra 188 in-game miles would have taken to drive.

Starry Knight - a fine-art beat'em up (yes, really)...
I just know you've all been wondering what would happen if the National Gallery suddenly put on themed wrestling days. Well, here's what it might look like - "Starry Knight"!
This is a journey through the struggles of one V. van Gogh, using the backdrop of his art work. The player is Vincent, all the adversaries are characters from various of his paintings, and you get to beat the living cr... well, actually, just beat the living out of them...
Throughout the game, there are various quotes or messages to help progress the journey, and the beautiful music is perfectly matched to both the mood and scenes on screen.
For this video, I play through the first level, and leave you with a glimpse of the second.
No Chapters, or masses of credits on this one.

ETS2 Peru Death Road
In this video, I drive one of the smallest map mods available - the Peru Death Road! It's a dramatic title, but a surprisingly easy drive, and packs the tiny 4.67MB .scs file with lots of details.
Even though this is the smallest of maps, I still drive one of the longest routes on it. And, whilst there is some yada-yada from me, I mostly just let some well-known classical music play as we skittle along in the amazing scenery.

An earlier video, with more challenging road conditions where use of sequential-manual gears is definitely worth it:

Chapters:
00:00 - Channel intro for ETS2, welcome back, and video intro
00:52 - Heading out to collect the cargo
02:30 - Truck specs, then leaving the first town
04:00 - Keep checking the mirrors as we relax to the 1812 Overture
05:23 - Watch out! The uphill verges are deceptively deep!
09:10 - Use the mirrors, especially when Sir Isaac Newton is in the driving seat...
11:45 - So the sound went all choppy again - swapping the truck noises
15:40 - Unlike the AI drivers, I'm straightening the curves where it's safe to do so
17:30 - Bob Ross moment - the 1812 Overture and the fake truck sound both slow down to match the video as we struggle up a hill
18:05 - Volvo noises are back!
20:30 - 1812 Overture is over, Hungarian Rhapsody beings
22:30 - Leaving the highway and back onto the twisty thin roads again
25:45 - Manually controlling the automatic gearbox
27:56 - Suffering following an AI truck trying to stay in lane, plus, is that nightfall?
30:05 - Hungarian Rhapsody fades into Blue Danube, rather like the cabin ambient lighting. The Bobblehead Stigs like it...
33:07 - Destination reached, and rather like the space station shuttle in Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey", we dock the cargo to a familiar refrain...
35:24 - Channel outro
Music, in playlist order (from YouTube Audio Library, free to use):

** Apologies for the stock audio in this video - the original recording had, for some reason, a 4Hz pulse that became unbearable in that section. Having experienced this before, I didn't waste any time but just replaced that section with this sound clip from the YouTube Audio Library!

Unboxing Stuff - Alienware AW510H
In this video, I unbox a new Alienware AW510H 7.1 Gaming Headset to see what it's all about.
In use:
So far, I've just used the headset with the splitter cable adapter from standard PC mic/headphone twin sockets. What I found was:
- the volume definitely needs adjusting or rebalancing since the are much louder than the previous set (Turtle Beach Earforce X12)
- in this basic setup, the microphone input is not heard in the headphones, so it's a bit like talking with ear-defenders on - hopefully the full USB/Alienware Command Center experience will help with this
- the earcups are very comfortable - it doesn't matter if you wear glasses, or game for days on end, the memory foam padding is very good at fitting around things
- the cable position in the left earcup is a bit low, so there is 'feedback' from the braided cables - by that I mean you can hear the noise of the cable rubbing against clothing around your shoulders. It is mostly solved by sending the cable backwards over your should, rather than forwards, but this does mean the controls are now behind you!
- Deals are always cropping up on Dell's website, so do check before you buy - for example, as I type this, the price had dropped 15% from a few days ago. In my experience, if you manage to get a discount code on top of a sale, going direct can beat most third-party retailer prices.
- the microphone is omnidirectional, but doesn't suffer from background noise if extended - it also is very clear, and free from flutter or spiking due to air movement from 'P', 'B', 'F', and so on. It is also usable when stowed back in the left earcup, so doesn't need extending in all cases.
Summary:
I'm very happy with this headset. I have no objective scoring system for audio, or any comparisons to other types apart from the ones I have here. However, subjectively, they are the most comfortable that I have used. The exclude a lot of higher/mid frequency external noise due to the airtight fit (which definitely makes your ears feel fully enclosed). And yet, the actual grip pressure from the headband is not excessive - they won't give you 'pinch-ache' after an hour or so of use.
Value:
Better-than-average feel and sound quality, good for the price, great if you can snag a deal or voucher.

It's still in use today...
