The Sword of the Spirit is not quite the last item in our armory. The Roman sword was ideal for thrusting and stabbing. When used in conjunction with the rest of the armor, it is very effective. However, to use any of the armor effectively, especially offensive weapons, soldiers need training. It is the same principle in spiritual warfare. The Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God. Just like a soldier trains daily for the day of battle, we need to train daily in the Word of God to stand firm in the spiritual battlefield.

Shields are another useful item for protection. Ephesians 6:16 we are to protect ourselves from the “flaming darts of the evil one.” The Romans had a tactic to mitigate flaming arrows from setting their wooden shields on fire. Flaming arrows that Christians face include seducing temptations, pride, and greed that lead us into disobedience to God. The Shield of Faith can not only protect us from these arrows, but also extinguish them. Have you picked up your shield today?

The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace are often taught as a symbol of evangelism. However, Ephesians 6 is talking about spiritual warfare which is different than the Great Commission. The Romans often adapted superior technology into their armor designs when encountering an enemy with a better piece of equipment. This included putting studs in their shoes. In spiritual warfare we are to “stand firm” with these spiritual shoes “of the Gospel of Peace.” The Gospel of Peace is not evangelism but the Peace we now have with God since become a Christian. Are you taking these shoes with you everywhere you go?

The next item that comes up in Ephesians 6:10-20 is the Breastplate of Righteousness. A breastplate is important to keep your vitals protected. The Romans designed a very effective breastplate for their time. But why does Paul call it Righteousness? Righteousness can also be described as Righteous Living. Putting on the breastplate is a daily and conscious decision every Christian needs to make. How do you put it on and make sure there are no gaps in your breastplate?

The first item of the Armor of God we encounter is described in Ephesians 6:14. It is the Belt of Truth. The belt is an important piece to a soldier’s armor. It helps hold things together and is used as an anchor or foundation piece to attach many of the other armor pieces. It is not insignificant that Paul designates the belt for truth and not one of the other items. In God’s world there is absolute truth. In our secular world, truth is relative. Why is truth important to the Armor and our faith?

The Armor of God is a popular Sunday School lesson that we don’t always get right. Paul was writing to an audience that would have seen this armor on a daily basis. There are more details in Ephesians 6:10-20 than just a quirky metaphor for spiritual warfare. This introduction will lay the foundation for this study and help you look for these important details that make all the difference when applying scripture to your daily life.

BASICS OF APOLOGETICS: Why should we care about the Old Covenant? (session 3/10)
Listen to the entire series: https://evidence4faith.org/christianbasics
The Old Covenant or Old Testament is often overlooked in favor of the New Testament. The Old Covenant is criticized for portraying an angry God or being irrelevant to Jesus’ story. As mentioned in the previous lesson, there is a specific reason why Christians need to study the Old and New Testaments together. This lesson will dive deeper into the importance and specific purpose of the Old Testament to help you develop a foundation for further study.
This lesson is from our Basics of Apologetics series. The purpose of this series is to help new believers (and maybe not so new believers) understand the building blocks of their faith and be equipped to investigate the difficult questions about their belief.

BASICS OF APOLOGETICS: The New Testament is not just about love (session 4/10)
Listen to the entire series: https://evidence4faith.org/christianbasics
Most will be familiar with one of the four Gospels and the story of salvation through Jesus. God’s love is the most emphasized aspect of the New Testament and a very well meaning slogan for today’s culture. However the New Testament is not just about love and if that’s all we learn from it, we will miss the greater point of our faith in Christ. This lesson will help broaden your understanding of the New Testament so you can be better equipped to learn and grow from this section of the Bible in your personal study.
This lesson is from our Basics of Apologetics series. The purpose of this series is to help new believers (and maybe not so new believers) understand the building blocks of their faith and be equipped to investigate the difficult questions about their belief.

BASICS OF APOLOGETICS: Why does the Bible have “Testaments”? (session 2/10)
Listen to the entire series: https://evidence4faith.org/christianbasics
The Bible is divided into two “testaments.” A common misconception about these “testaments” is that they are completely independent from each other. This idea lacks understanding of why the Bible canon was put together the way it is and what purpose each Testament serves. This session will address these questions and give you a big picture understanding of how these two parts of the Bible work together.
This lesson is from our Basics of Apologetics series. The purpose of this series is to help new believers (and maybe not so new believers) understand the building blocks of their faith and be equipped to investigate the difficult questions about their belief.

In 1979 the British Museum conducted a dig at the ancient city of Babylon where they found a plethora of clay cylinders covered in writing. These could be considered old library books with important historical records about the city, its rulers, and major events. This cylinder and the works of the historian Josephus help us piece together a picture of the rise and reign of Cyrus. The Bible also contains an account of the reign of Cyrus. How well do these stories match? Can the Bible be trusted as a source of history?

Mary and Martha’s story often singles out Martha as being in the wrong. Is this the correct perspective? Martha is hosting and serving Jesus and his following and fulfilling the responsibilities of a good host. She clearly is working very hard and should be commended on what she does right. Her error seems to be in her motives. How can we avoid doing a good thing for the wrong reason and get our motivation in the right place? Martha asks Jesus to reprimand Mary for sitting and listening to Jesus teaching instead of helping her host the house guests. Instead, Jesus supports Mary’s choice. But that’s not the only reason Jesus commended Mary’s choice. ARCHAEOLOGY OF DANIEL: Belshazzar & The Nabonidus Chronicle 5/7

The Bible describes King Belshazzar as the last king of Babylon before the Medo-Persians took over but history tell us that Nabonidus was king at the time. Is this an error in the biblical record? An archeological artifact called the Nabonidus Chronicle which describes the fall of Babylon and its rulers sheds some light on this apparent discrepancy. This video is from our series on the Archaeology of Daniel. The book of Daniel is the second most criticized book of the Bible (behind Jonah). Everyone experiences peer pressure at some point in their life. Peer pressure can come from work, friends, family, religious and political groups, and other social communities we frequent. For example it’s easy to be Christian and behave in step with biblical principles when living in short term Christian communities like Christian camps. But it’s a lot harder to live out those values when surrounded by other communities that don’t share those values or beliefs. It becomes easier to compromise a little here and a little there to keep our social status within these communities. What are the consequences of giving into this peer pressure and can it be overcome? Aaron’s story from the Bible can give us insight into this problem. Accountability is a hard principle to live by which is why two are better than one for those seeking to live with integrity. Jehoiada was the best accountability partner you could ask for. Jehoiada guided young King Joash in the ways of God to restore the kingdom after the terrible reign of his idol worshipping grandmother. Just pick up any recent news headline and you’ll notice that God’s Word and modern culture are rarely in sync. Current Christian thinkers and influencers will disagree on what God’s Word “really means” or even claim that modern cultural mores demand an updated interpretation of scripture. This social media driven phenomenon we see in our day is actually an age old problem. Nadab and Abihu are two characters from the time of Moses that learned the hard way what God thinks about our cultural re-interpretations. This story should serve to us as a warning and as a lesson on what not to do with God’s Word. This lesson is from our series Keep the Fires Burning, a Bible study series of the minor characters of the Bible that can teach us major lessons. Each episode will introduce you to a new character and help you understand why they are mentioned.
