In the first video I painted this scene on a bright acrylic underpainting. How does a different foundation change the outcome of a painting? For this attempt, I started my painting with an underpainting of burnt sienna washes. In this method, I can define all my values before adding color. I tend to paint tighter and with more realistic colors in this method.

One way to start a painting is to paint a colorful acrylic underpainting. This underpainting will be just the foundation for the oil paints. Check out Part 2 to see the painting finished with oils.

It's time to add color to the painting. I like doing this while my underpainting is still fresh. The underpainting color makes its way into my paint and gives the whole work a better feeling of unity. I like to establish my darks first. I will paint a few of my lightest areas and then work all the other values in between.

Here is the middle of a painting, that I find is where all the doubt and insecurity comes in. Can I pull it off? Another painting of mediocrity, or will this one capture the viewer. I sat down with my painting one more time after this for fine tuning.

Starting with an underpainting, you are studying your subject, values, drawing, and form. You are establishing the groundwork for the painting, the foundation for color.
