The Best CNC Workholding Method in Aerospace Manufacturing
Hey all!
Today, I’ve got this interesting looking aerospace part. I thought I would go through and describe one of the key processes by which many of our fasters, you can see them connected to the back of this, are used. This is called Picture Framing.
Picture Framing
Fasteners
Legacy Method
So, a little history before we start. I came up back in the early 80’s, early 90’s being when we first started our business, as an apt NC programmer, meaning you wrote on paper. Back in those days we used to locate parts against datums. So, you would have a part that had 3 or 4 major datums and our fixturing would locate and assess and everything was located against that.
Best Method
Best method: Picture Framing
A smart person then came up with the concept of holding and locating parts not respective to their datums. We would still use the datums but the things that we used to hold and locate them were only related to the datums. That is where we come into the idea of a picture frame.
This here is a great example. You have got this part and it might have one of these flanges which might be a datum. We are not locating against the datum and we are never going to use the datum, but, we are creating the datum within the concept of this frame or picture frame.
Picture Framing
Picture Framing
This is the Billet that this part started from and inside the billet we have it’s holding, we can see that it is held with the fasteners and then a locating situation where we have a pin or pins that are locating it. As long as we keep those locations constant throughout the process, we can keep the relationship to the datums correct as well. That is kind of the idea behind using a picture frame.
In our case, our fasteners lend themselves very well to this process because they allow us to hold the parts and we can even machine down the frame right above the part or fastener or right along the edges of the fastener so that when we are done, all we must do is break the part out of the frame.
Tabbing
Now there are several different ways to do this tabbing, that is what we call this little runner right here is a tab. We have over the top tabs which are not shown here. We have a page on our website that describes this in a bit more detail and the part is like this one as well. On their, we have over the top tabs, along the flanges type tabs and then we have foil like tabs that are going to run along the bottom edge. More information about this is available on our website.
The idea is that our part comes out of this frame if we can use the frame back and forth in all of our processes and locate against it then we can make our part complete and we can hold our tolerances and our datums at a much lower cost in fixturing. In our case, we use a modular fixture so that you only have one fixture, permanently. You can then use your fasteners in the modular fixture wherever they happen to fit well with the geometry of the part.
The other thing that this type of fixturing does is that it lends itself to a situation where you can nest parts where you might have even ten or twenty parts in one nest and then you will have the fasteners coming up whenever there is an opportunity for them to hold the piece.
Nesting
Nesting
The concept looks like this: you machine it, you create a very stable setup. Generally starting with stage 1 which means that this is in a vice of some kind, ideally one of our modular vises. Stage 1 is preparing the part for the fixture where you will have the fasteners, the zipbushing and the retractable dowel pins. This will enable you to flip it into that fixture and continue from there in that fixture.
Eventually, and towards the very end of the process, you are going to reveal the tabs when you are machining. The idea here being that you have a very stable situation, not only because you have these fasteners that are very stable, the process itself is very stable.
At the end of the process, we reveal the tabs in the very last operation, and then we remove the fasteners from it (the fastener is in the modular fixture plate). You take off the fasteners and then you snap the part out of the frame.
That is the idea, hope it has been helpful!

The Best Way To Use a Dovetail Vise May Surprise You | Elijah Tooling
Hey guys, it’s Rick here!
Today, we are going to talk about the Flex Vise. I want to show you how you can use the Flex Vise in an unconventional way. I am standing this close to the machine to make you guys understand how stable of a setup we actually have running here. This stability is the main point. The Flex Vise is a very robust vise for great work-holding.
Flex Vise
With the machine open now, you can see how we are currently using the flex vise. We have got six parts in work at one time and we probe them in. This means that you do not see any ex-locating. Here, we have 2 flex vises actually holding the part. The flex vise on the right is pushing the part into the other flex vise.
Flex Vise
The point of this is that you could be doing this with both a small block and a very large block. We like to think of this concept as something that is unique in the CNC Workholding Marketplace. Most, or all, dovetail vises have a limited amount of space to grip parts with. With ours, we can use the whole space, no matter what size machine bed you have.
So, we have this block over here, and you can see the dovetail on it already. We did not make a dovetail further into the block. You can think about this block as growing in size. This does not matter as we are only taking very little material out of the block to actually hold it.
Dove Tail
The other thing that we are thinking about is extending this idea even further and creating a dovetail-type modular vise that is not in one piece but in two pieces. You can look for that in the future. We like this idea and we like exploring this concept that we can hold whatever size part we want. In this particular case, we are using the vises to hold six different parts. We are using our “lean concept”, which is that we are machining them all as if they are one part, then we can have one tool, do all the work. It's beautiful and efficient.
Thank you.

What CNC Modular Fixtures Do and Why You Need Them | CNC Workholding
Hey guys, Rick here from Elijah Tooling. www.elijahtooling.com
Today, I just wanted to show you these beauties. We are just getting ready to ship them. These are Modular Fixture Plates and I am just going to take a few seconds to describe them so that you know what they do and why you need them.
So, it is a steel plate and it has a standardized pattern. We call this a 2x2 inline pattern which means that the Invert-A-Bolt™ Fasteners are in line with the multi-purpose holes. So, we have a multi-purpose hole here and the fastener here. The multi-purpose hole is used for location and holding.
Right now, we have plugs in this hole but our users would use our Xzertz™ Retractable Locating Dowel Pin. These are pretty cool because they disappear into the plate and you do not have to worry about them being in the way and you can literally raise them up into the piece that is being held.
The other thing, our Invert-A-Bolt™ Fasteners does the same kind of thing; it works, flush mounted in the plate and comes up into the part and hold it. This is why people use these kinds of plates. They are able to machine parts without obstruction to the process through workholding.
So, we can hold something with the plate and we do not have to worry about something else running into it and getting in the way. It is a very good use for this type of real estate, if you think about this as real estate, a great efficient use of real estate by use of one of these fixtures.
Those are the two basic elements of the fixture but there are other elements to it as well. One is that you have this scribing that allows you to pinpoint which hole you are using so you can take this and instruct your operator on which location to use, for example, hole 11 and pull it up into the part. That is the idea behind the scribing.
Then, of course, there is some way of locating the plate. In this particular case, we have a center hole that is precision and then we have an alignment edge which is used to align the plate.
There are always going to be these features in these Modular Fixture Plate. you are going to have a pattern, you are going to have these products, you are going to have the scribing, and you are going to have some form of precise location.
We hold, hole-to-hole, about plus and minus half or maybe eight tenths, something like that. That is very close and you can hold just about anything during machining with that kind of precision.
Great to share with you, see you next time!

Quick-Change Demo for Vises and Trunnions
So what we're going to do, is we're going to load our vices, we're going to load a part, we're going to probe it in, we're going to cut it. And then, we're going to go to the next step; which is to load our trunnion, load it, load a part and start it up. What's the point? Well, we're trying to show you how fast you can load and unload your parts of course. And then, also how fast it is to bring the trunnion in, and precisely locate it; get it into place and start machining with it.

How To Install Invert-A-Bolt Fasteners and ZipBushings from Elijah Tooling
Hey guys, it's Rick at Elijah Tooling.
Today we're going to go through the steps required to make the holes so that we can install these two common products that are used in our fixtures.
Invert-a-bolt Fastener and ZipBushing InstallationSo I've got a fixture that's in work right now.
So you can see that this fixture has the hole for the Invert-a-bolt Fastener and the hole for the ZipBushing, and that is the most common type of hole that goes into our fixtures. We're going to show you all the steps.
Invert-a-bolt and Zipbushing in Modular Fixture
We're also going to use acrylic so that we can keep the doors open and run it sequentially.
So join me in just a second, and we'll get it going.
So, we've got it set up with the EZE Vise Ultimates and a nice piece of acrylic.
Zipbushing and Invert-a-bolt Fastener modular fixture
We're going to go through the process tool by tool to make the ZipBushing first, then we'll have a little break, and then we're going to make the Fastener hole, and then I'll install them.
I'll show you how we do all that.
First sure we're going to be roughing the hole for the ZipBushing, you guys are familiar with this. I'm not telling you anything you don't know.
All right, next tool is coming up, bigger; this is 5'8".
All right, yeah finishing the bore, it's not bored, we're circular interbulading it.
Modular Fixture Hole for Invert-a-bolt Fasteners
We can hold that very closely, by the way, a good way to get your tight tolerance with the use of the ZipBushing.
We got to do this properly we can hold + or - a couple of tenths all day long, and then positionally as well this is the threader.
We're going to thread mill for the outside thread of the ZipBushing, and that completes our hole all right, so we've got instruction sheets.
I'll put this in front of the camera.
These come with all of our product or many of our products, so it goes through the process of how we do this.
These come shipped with your product.
We're going to use the Pro-1, which is called out in our instruction sheet, and it tells us to use a setting of 4 so can we see this.
I am NOT going to use 4 for acrylic because I don't want to crack the block.
I may end up cracking the block anyway, but we'll try it.
But, here's your driver and take the ZipBushing and we are going to screw it in.
There you go. Beautiful.
Now we're going to go on to the Invert-a-Bolt Fastener.
All right this is the 3/4" through hole now it doesn't go through this block, but this is the size that we call out for the through-hole.
Now, this is going to do the ID of the thread once again we're just drilling straight now we're going to be doing the chamfer on top and last, but not least we're going to thread mill the 12 pitch for the outside thread there you.
It's as easy as that.
Let me once again show you our sheet that we use to install the fastener.
It goes through all the processes for you so you won't have any difficulty in doing this.
I'm going to go ahead and install a Fastener in the hole so on this particular setting.
We tell you to use the setting of 1 on our Pro-1.
Remember that this is a left-hand threaded product, and we typically will screw the fastener down almost to the bottom before we start torquing it so there we go the point of what we're doing here is to show you that it's very simple to install these products you can make your own modular fixture plate.
So great to spend time with you, and we'll see you next time.
