Why Quick-Change Your Kurt Vise? It Only Takes 22 Seconds. March 10, 2018 Hi guys, this is Rick at Elijah Tooling. Today I want to show you something that I think you'll get a lot out of. First, I want to introduce this world class workholding product; this is our patented Invert-a-Bolt Fastener and it is an integral part of our flat-plate modular fixture plate workholding system. It's a captive work-holding fastener and It's used to connect any two objects with high precision. Specifically, in the CNC workholding solutions industry, you can connect a base plate to parts, plates, tooling, milling machine vises, or anything you want. Today, I'm going to talk about connecting it to a Kurt mill vise from Kurt Manufacturing. Rick Miller From Elijah Tooling Explains How To Convert Your Kurt Workholding Vises To Quick Change So, I've got a Kurt machinist vise body right over here. It's already prepped. It's basically upside-down. Okay, so don't get confused that this is upside down. What we wanted to do is prep this to accept the Invert-a-Bolt Fasteners (Not Standard Kurt Vise Accessories) and then, we want to prep it to accept a locating product as well. So, I'm going to screw these in just for kicks so you can kind of see what it's gonna be once it's in the base plate. Kurt Vise D675 You've got the four Invert-a-Bolt workholding fasteners and they're connecting the base of the Kurt workholding vise. Now I know what you're thinking, you're thinking "well that's just fine and dandy but I don't see a locator." Well, that's what this is all about. This is our patent-pending locator device, and it's a combination bushing and threaded insert. That's that product we call it a ZipBushing. You can drive it with a driver and it drives straight in, and drives straight out. It's pretty cool. Locates on the center just like a bushing does. But, what we use it for is we put this Xzertz™ Retractable Locating Dowel Pin in here. That's our name for a retractable dowel pin. So, we can screw this pin in and out. We can even make it go flush, just like we can screw the Invert-a-Bolt Fastener flush. So, let me show you I could take this and it's going to go into this locating hole that we've prepped for on the Kurt vise. Kurt Vise Body So, these six products and their insertion tools right here form a kit and that kit is $325. (Replacement Parts Available). So, for $325 you can easily convert your Kurt vise to something that repeatedly locates over-and-over-and-over again, and will prevent your operators from spending an undue amount of time dial indicating that thing in and setting it up. We're going to show you the loading and unloading of this vise and we're also going to show you the unloading and the loading of a Kurt vice that doesn't have the quick change hardware on it so that we can compare the Invert-a-Bolt system against the standard Kurt Workholding System. So, I was just talking about quick-changing a Kurt machine vise, and that incorporates two different products. We have Xzertz™ Retractable Locating Dowel Pins right here and you have the four Invert-a-Bolt Fasteners right here. So, I realize that this fixture is a lot more complicated than what we're talking about and it's a special-purpose fixture that allows somebody to do this for almost anything but for the specific application that we're talking about. A Kurt Machine Vise Will Be Quick Changed Onto This Machine One thing I did want to also talk about is how to connect the base plate if you're doing a quick-change plate versus connecting to the T-Slot fixture and, of course, this plate is already connected to a T-Slot fixture, but what we've got is another kit that incorporates one of our T-Slot fasteners. You see how it works the same way and it actually goes into a slot just like that. Flate Fixture Plate Being Prepared For A Kurt Vise Then, you can pull it up into whatever it is you're holding. In this case, it would be the base plate. The kit also involves a fixture key and it'll slide in the slot as well. So, I just wanted to explain that that's one of the kits that's available and it allows you to create a base plate that then connects to the t-slot fixture below. Now I'm going to have our CNC Machinist Aaron help me out. He's going to bring the vise over and we're going to show you how we can rapidly load it and then he's also going to dial it in and show you that it's repeating. So, I'll let him come and do that now. Alright, it goes on there fast and, again check it out. Once again, rapid installation. You would use this for Dowel Pins, Shoulder Screws, Screws, and our Xzert Retractable Dowel Pin. Retractable Dowel Pins Modular Fixture Tooling Plate with Retractable Dowel Pens (Xzerts) The Retractable Dowel Pins are used for location and designed to go up and down, meaning they are always located in the fixture, and ready to pop-up whenever you need them. A BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL 5-AXIS MODULAR WORK-HOLDING FIXTURE www.elijahtooling.com Hey guys, Rick here from Elijah Tooling. I've got this fixture here that we are going to be sending out to a customer. I thought I would take a few minutes and show you a few things about it. As you can see, I can literally move it around because it is in this box. Round Modular Fixture This is a round cnc-workholding modular-fixture that is going into an Okuma Trunnion Type 5-Axis machine. And, as you can see, we have set it up with a standard two-inch pattern, just like we have talked about before. It has got the new Invert-A-Bolt Fasteners in it and it has also got the multi-purpose holes. We have talked about them before but, as you can see, it is a bored and threaded hole. Flex Vise on a round modular fixture In this case, we are shipping one of our dove-tail vises, the FlexVise with it. But, what I thought was cool and what you should see, is that we have made it so it would adapt to the T-slot fixture that it's going into. Center Plug in round modular fixture This particular machine has a center plug and we have created a screw-in, precise locating plug that then will locate with respect to a location in the slot. Locator on a round modular fixture Here is the other locator. So we have got a locator, another locator, and in between them is the center slot. You can see that we are using our 18-millimeter T-slot Fastener to hold the plate. T slot fastener on round modular fixture This is "kind of" set up the way it is going to look on the machine once it is in the fixture. The T-slot Fastener can come out quite easily and it is in line with the slots and makes for a perfect scenario, in which you have got this fastener that is sitting in this slot and is not moving around. This plate is made specifically for this. You have also got all these locations. You can see that the threaded holes go all the way through; you do not have to really worry about how deep that screw is going in. That's about it. We have talked about modular fixture plates before, but I thought this was a beauty, and that we ought to show it to you before it is out the door. Notice this nice heavy box? That is how they are shipped. It also comes with an inspection port so that you know that this is precisely made and will do the job that you want it to do. www.elijahtooling.com Hey guys, It's Rick at Elijah Tooling. I've got some exciting stuff to show you today. Today, we're gonna work on a whole different kind of fixture. This is a combination of our Modular Fixture,where you have Fasteners and ZipBushings incrementally. But, we've also added an element, which is our T-Slot Fasteners with the slots that accept the Xzerts Retractable Dowel Pins. So, I am gonna show you how we use that and I'm gonna kinda show you why we might use a riser or a different pattern at the same time. But, as you can see, we've got it set up for... I've got three of the T-Slot Fasteners in here and I'm gonna add one in a minute when we load this riser. But, right now, let me show you something. So we're gonna, I'm gonna quick-load these guys... These are the FlexVises... We're quick loading them on there and we can then bring our Fasteners up into the piece and hold it. And, you can see that it's gonna be pretty fast. Alright... So, this pattern works for this part. Right? This is a 2" Pattern. That's the idea. You get the idea. Of course, I could have pulled up all of them. But, I'm trying to save time on the video... Ok. We've also got this and in this case, I am gonna use the slot and the modulars. So, we can drop it on here like that, and we are gonna pull the stud of our fastener up into it. Again, we can do that at several locations here. But, you can see it's on. Right? Then, we're gonna do one more. Are you seeing how fast I'm moving that stuff on and on, by the way? Just FYI. Just trying to show you how this works. Now, we've got... Now, this particular product, by the way, has this slot in the bottom. So, right now, these Xzertz are positively locating it. So, you can use that. That's part of the flexibility of this particular device. If I didn't want it to locate, I could screw those Xzerts down and then it would move around. But you can see, again... The Pattern fits all these parts. But, what do I do when my part doesn't fit the pattern? And, I've got this modular fixture that is so cool, I can do all kinds of stuff with it... Well, then you might want to think about sometype of quick-change plate. This is a riser that we made for it. You can see... Well, actually I am gonna need to screw down some of these Xzertz. So, that's pretty cool! Your dowels are still in the plate. They are there all the time. Right? Ok. So, now we are gonna load it on here... There we go. Check it out. And now, remember... I was going to use this and put it up there like that... And now, we're using our T-Slot Fastener hold this. There you go. Check it out. Now, this particular riser has a pattern that accepts... This is a 5" pattern. So you can screw it in here, like this... And as you can see... Now, we've accommodated a different pattern. We're not using the 2"X2" pattern anymore we're using a 5" pattern. And that was the point of this riser. Now, in this particular case... The riser... We made it so that it fit certain parts and then the rest it we inserted a 2"X2" pattern again, so that it would be common with many other things. Anyway, that's the idea. And, uh... I wanted to show it to you today. By the way, this is gonna be in a big reveal here in the next few months. We are getting ready to release the Incredi-Vise for production. So, FYI... But, now it's been enhanced with this modular fixture plate, which involves having other characteristics that are available to it. For example - our fastener, that allows you to quick-change things in and out of it. Like this vise, which ultimately could be this plate. And then, we also have multi-purpose hole for location. So, the reality is - this thing creates a lot more capability than the regular old standard t-slot fixture. You can see it's an oversized plate as well, which means that - we can use this area over here. So, that we can use the entire x-axis, y-axis of the machine. So, we get a bigger machine out of it as well. So, I thought I'd just quick-change something really fast and you can note how fast it goes, so that - one we're going find out for the programmers and the machinist, "This is easy, this is fast.". For those execs out there, that got to pay the bills - ROI on it is great. And, for those buyers, and those people that are buying this stuff - I can assure you that we've got our act together. You're not going to have a problem with the sale, or with the shipping, or any of it. Anyway, let's go through this. Just another few seconds guys. Plate off, right. I'm just going to show you the device coming off at the same time. Just like that brother. Put it back on, okay. This vise is pretty cool, it's got these specialty nuts in it and it allows the fastener to be used with it. But, it can also be used with bolts if you don't have the fasteners.
