Derek Charles Johnson’s performance of “O Praise The Name (Anastasis)” Song by Hillsong This song has become one of my favorite songs in recent years that would be considered a modern hymn. It has a quality that compares to others like Death Was Arrested or even This I Believe (The Creed) — another Hillsong gem. Just like last week, I find this song to be an excellent addition around Easter. But really what we are expressing is a year round truth. The song takes us back to the point of Calvary, to the empty tomb, and points us to Christ’s return. As I have been contemplating the blessed hope lately (my current blog series), a song like this ties in marvelously. Derek Charles Johnson’s performance of “How Deep The Father’s Love For Us” Written by Stuart Townend. How Deep The Father’s Love For Us is a beautifully crafted song. I don’t know of another modern-day hymn that summarizes the Gospel and Christ’s death and resurrection as poignantly as this song does. It’s one of those songs that can bring a grown man to tears when stopping to read the lyrics and considering their weight (I might be that grown man!). And although we hear this song a lot around Good Friday/Easter, it’s one of those tunes we need to hear often as it reminds us again of Christ’s sacrifice. “It was my sin that held Him there until it was accomplished.” I need to sing that and be aware that it was my sin that put Him on the cross. Derek Charles Johnson’s performance of “Holy Spirit” Written by Bryan & Katie Torwalt with well-known renditions by Francesca Battistelli and Kari Jobe. Bryan & Katie Torwalt truly gave the church (and worship leaders) a gift when they wrote Holy Spirit. It is a refreshing, much needed thought in our worship. And in my opinion, it is totally appropriate to welcome the presence of the Holy Spirit into our midst. The simplicity of that request can be met only by a response from the Lord to allow our awareness of Him to grow; to see His glory more fully. One day we will see it in full! Derek Charles Johnson’s performance of “I Surrender All” A simple song of worship, I Surrender All is about as honest a song as we can bring (in my opinion). Occasionally I like to work this song into a worship set or a concert. It is one way to just pause and recenter and fall upon the Lord — appealing to His goodness and His mercy. All to Jesus I surrender! I cannot say those words without truly laying all of my life down. ALL to Him I freely give. My hope is that if I lay my will down, I don’t proceed to pick it back up again. Derek Charles Johnson’s performance of “Be Thou My Vision (Be My True Light)” I was playing around with this familiar hymn, Be Thou My Vision, and in the turnaround sections between verses, I started adding a separate lyric line. “Be Thou my vision, Be my true light, High King of heaven, my soul satisfied.” With hymns, I don’t often rework or reimagine melodies. But sometimes an additional line seems to fit. In a lot of our modernized worship music, bringing hymns into our context is just a small way to keep them fresh and to appeal to a multi-generational audience. I love that so many hymns can do that and that they still speak, no matter how old. Be Thou My Vision is (again) a huge favorite of mine. There’s so much depth in these lyrics; the writer desires a true closeness with the Lord. I say this a lot but these truly are some of my favorite lines of any hymn out there. Derek Charles Johnson’s performance of “Good Good Father” Written by Anthony Brown and Pat Barrett with well-known renditions by Chris Tomlin, Zealand Worship, and Housefires I love the honesty of a song like Good Good Father which starts out “I’ve heard a thousand stories of what they think You’re like.” It acknowledges that people have many varying views of who God is and what they believe about His nature. But as we listen and worship through the song, it’s as if it states “this is Who He is (He’s a good good Father) and there’s nothing that can change it.” Perfect in all of His ways, good to us, loving and kind…these attributes are known by those who seek Him and desire to walk in fellowship with Him. Yes we need songs that balance out the loving nature of God with His holiness and righteousness. There are songs that do that. But as we are reminded of God’s righteousness, we must also know He loves us. Deeply. This song (written by Anthony Brown and Pat Barrett) helps us understand just how good our Father is. We may have had imperfect fathers. We may be imperfect as dads (I know I am!). But it’s good to know I can run to the One that is perfect. Derek Charles Johnson’s performance of “Oh Lord, You’re Beautiful” Written by Keith Green From the album “So You Wanna Go Back To Egypt” by Keith Green I love simple songs of worship and Keith Green was masterful at writing such pieces. Oh Lord, You’re Beautiful is a song that strips away pretenses and simply leads a listener into a place of adoration and praise. And in response to seeing Christ so clearly we sing “I want to take Your word and shine it all around.” It’s a response that motivates us to share what we have found in Him. To let the unlooking world see and desire this “beauty” as well. The beauty of the Lord which draws us to seek Him, to follow Him, and to ultimately lay everything else aside so we can pursue Him.
