A new bottle return system developed by beverage companies, and adopted by the New Brunswick government, will pay consumers an estimated $18 million more in enhanced refunds on returned empties this year. BUT that will be financed, in part, by $11 million in hidden fees likely to be imposed on those same consumers
In addition, another $12 million per year the province has been using for community environmental projects is being diverted into the industry-run program.
New Brunswick Environment Minister Gary Crossman has called the new bottle return system a "good-news story" but he acknowledges the new fees imposed on consumers will erode some of the benefit of larger refunds.
He also says his department has not figured out how it will resupply $12-million per year in funding to New Brunswick's environmental trust fund, now that the bottle deposit money that used to feed it has been fully redirected to the company managing bottle returns.
"No fees from the beverage containers program will be remitted to the environmental trust fund under the new model for managing empty beverage containers," Crossman said during a legislature committee hearing that looked at the changes in November.
"The accumulated surplus of the environmental trust fund will be sufficient to continue investing in priority projects at the current level, as other revenue streams are evaluated."

Bottle refunds doubled in New Brunswick on April 1. But new HIDDEN fees imposed on consumers by the beverage industry are clawing back some of that new bounty.
Since 1992, New Brunswick consumers have been required to pay 10-cent deposits — 20 in the case of wine and liquor bottles — when buying packaged beverages, to encourage recycling.
Those deposits were eligible for a 50-per-cent refund when the container was returned to a recycling depot, with the other 50 per cent split equally between paying program expenses and financing the province's environmental trust fund.
But, beginning last week, the refund increased to 100 per cent of the deposit paid.
That change was orchestrated by Encorp Atlantic, a not-for-profit organization created by the beverage industry that manages bottle returns in New Brunswick.

It has been promoting the new system to the public by emphasizing that refund amounts paid to those who return beverage containers have doubled.
"Good news for New Brunswickers, beverage containers are fully refundable starting April 1, 2024," said Encorp in a new release it issued last month announcing the change.

However, to help finance those larger refunds, Encorp is being allowed by the province to charge a patchwork of new container recycling fees that for consumers will reduce part, and in some cases all, of the value of the enhanced refund.
Encorp president Pierre Landry would not agree to an interview about the new charges to consumers, which Encorp is permitted by the province to set on its own.
He said, via text messages, that the fees are a complex issue that are not easy for the public to grasp.
"This transition has been very challenging," Landry said, in declining an interview request.
"As much as I would like to focus on environmental performance and consumer access and convenience, I do not have any further comments."
The single largest category of recyclable containers subject to a 10-cent deposit in New Brunswick is the plastic drink bottle, mostly used for water and soft drinks.
An estimated 154 million will be sold in New Brunswick this year and although the refund on those will increase by five cents, a three-cent recycling fee has been established by Encorp on those containers. In most cases it is payable by the consumer when the drink is purchased and reduces the benefit of the enhanced refund by more than half.
The effect is different on different types of containers.
On aluminum soft drink cans, the fee has been set at one cent. On aluminum beer cans, it is two cents.
However, on steel juice cans the recycling fee has been set at eight cents, three cents more than the increased refund on those containers.
Similarly, wine and liquor bottles which carry a deposit of 20 cents, will see refunds increase by 10 cents — not enough to cover their new recycling fee of 11 cents.

That makes the new fees nearly invisible in New Brunswick and difficult to track for interested consumers.
In British Columbia, where the industry body Encorp Pacific runs a nearly identical program, retailers are encouraged to show container recycling fees on retail receipts for the sake of transparency, according to the Recycling Council of British Columbia.
On its website, the council says Encorp Pacific "has encouraged retailers to show this fee as a separate item on your till receipt," much the way bottle deposit charges are itemized.
That's not the case in New Brunswick.
In materials explaining to retailers how the new system works here, Encorp Atlantic warns that the provincial government is forbidding retailers by regulation from disclosing any information to consumers about the new fee on receipts.

"While the presence of a [container recycling fee] can be communicated to the public, [it] cannot be presented by retailers as a separate line item that is part of the point-of-sale calculation on consumer receipts," retail store owners were told in a written directive on the issue.
In an emailed statement, New Brunswick's Environment Department said it is standing government policy that recycling costs charged to New Brunswick consumers on a variety of products, such as paint, oil, electronics and other products, not be shown on a customer receipt and the new bottle charges are the same.
"However, producers or retailers can inform the public of a recycling fee on producer websites, flyers, or shelving signage so there is visibility/transparency," said the statement.

Added to the murkiness for consumers is the fact Encorp says the container recycling fee charges are being levied on beverage companies and will be passed along to consumers as companies see fit.
New Brunswick's largest beverage retailer, N.B. Liquor, has said it is passing these costs onto consumers, but Encorp says it does not know if that practice will be universal.
"Brand owners may, at their sole discretion, decide to absorb these costs, or pass them on to retailers," Encorp states in materials explaining the new charge.
"Likewise, retailers may choose to absorb these costs, or pass on these costs to consumers."
In the changes, oversight for the bottle return program has been transferred from the New Brunswick Environment Department to the Crown corporation Recycle N.B.

However, last week Recycle N.B. said any questions about the new program and the new charges would have to be answered by Encorp.
Under the new program, Encorp can raise the container recycling fee it charges on 90-days' notice and, in an emailed statement, Recycle N.B. CEO Frank LeBlanc said his body has no authority over those issues.
"Encorp is not required to notify Recycle N.B. when [container recycling fee] charges are set or being adjusted, either as an increase or a decrease," said LeBlanc in the statement.
He said Recycle N.B. "does not review or approve" the container recycling fee.
Environmental groups are already expressing some nervousness about the decision to divert revenues away from the province's environmental trust fund to Encorp without a definitive plan in place to replace them.

A collection of three groups in southern New Brunswick issued a joint statement Friday asking for "consultation and dialogue" with the province about its plans to replenish the trust fund.
"We look forward to that consultation happening so that we can continue to support local environmental and community actions," read the statement from the Petitcodiac Watershed Alliance, Eastern Charlotte Waterways and ACAP Saint John.
A request to interview Environment Minister Gary Crossman about the changes was acknowledged by the department but not granted.
In a statement, the department said it understands the importance of the province's environmental trust fund to community groups that are supported by it, but a new method of financing the fund has not been settled on.

Saint John Regional Hospital Covid Protocols
On December 17, 2020 Saint John Regional Hospital maternity ward ruined my Son’s 1st experience of becoming a father with there ridiculous Covid protocols. If they had told me that my son had to leave I would not of bothered going up to the unit!
You made absolutely NO sense when you said he wasn’t allowed to go out for a smoke but had to leave when someone came in! Make it make sense!
My son never got to see his 2nd son being born because he died July 21, 2021. His 2nd son was born November 6, 2021
I hope the ward nurse was proud of herself for being such an ignorant witch Christine S.
I went to the hospital to visit my new grand baby & @ the entranceway I was told that only one could go in at a time so my husband went back to the car.
A nurse came in a couple times to check on mom & take baby temperature everything was fine I thought until the ward Christine S. came in with attitude right from the start. Told me I shouldn’t be there. I was stunned & shocked because @ the entrance I was told one @ a time. I wasn’t aware that my son who had been at the hospital the whole time & was registered with a hospital band on his wrist that he was expected to leave for me to go in. If they had told me that at the entrance I would of just went back home. Christine S. came in the room with attitude from the start. Not a nice lady, no people Skills what so ever, does not know the first thing about being nice & not vary professional.
I don’t care how bad of a day you are having you have no right to treat people the way she did. There is no excuse for being rude to someone & name calling pathetic toward my son & ruined Jeff & Tori’s first time experience of becoming a parent that they can’t ever get back. Shame on her & shame on the hospital for letting someone like this deal with the public.
I didn’t know that when you went to the hospital that they treat you like your a criminal in jail. I was going to watch the baby, my grandson so they could go get something to eat & have a cigarette when that nasty ward nurse came in.
So I was getting ready to leave right after her being rude & telling them they weren’t allowed to go & saying you are pathetic as she went out the door & I went to the nurses station & ask for the nurse’s name that was in the room’s because she was rude & I wanted to make a complaint. She walked away from me instead of giving me her name. They were playing stupid sayings they didn’t know her name & I had to point her out & they still were refusing to give me her name & said she worked in the ward.
The whole nurses staff pretty much ganged up on me trying to blame my son for her ignorant behaviour & kept trying to twist everything & redirect what the issue was. They were raising there voices at us because they didn’t want to acknowledge there ignorant rude staff member & instead joined in with her & followed her behaviour.
One bad apple will spoil the whole bunch.
Then the next day they call Social Services to talk to Tori & Jeff because of the incident that they caused. Totally unexceptionable & I will be touching base with social services because to me you have a abusive employee working on the baby floor.
Your staff stressed me out so bad that my anxiety was through the roof & you can hear it in my voice on my recording that I could barely speak & get the words out.
All I wanted was her name so I could make a complaint & they were treating me like I was a common criminal & they were making a scene by refusing to give me her name & trying to say that we were breaking the rules when I thought I was following the rules by leaving my husband in the car.
All my son said to her was that he was in the room earlier when they had a visitors & there wasn’t any issues & no one told him to leave then & that he had been going outside all day & that no one told him he wasn’t allowed that he was going to have a cigarette & she said he was pathetic & walked out the door.
The staff was making a big scene by trying to cover up there ignorant rude abusive staff member.
All they had to do was give me her name or employee number Id & I would of been on my way but no they had to try to refuse to give me her name & then call the security guards to escort me out because I wanted her name to make a complaint. Totally unprofessional & uncalled for.
I didn’t know that it was against the law to make a complaint about a bad employee.
Then they went on to say my son was rude to the nurse Christine after the fact that she called him pathetic & they were going to call security to make him leave. No he wasn’t rude he was trying to explain that he had been going for a smoke all day & they never told him he couldn’t. That earlier he had visitors & he wasn’t told he had to leave.
Also it makes absolutely no sense what so ever that they tried to say he wasn’t allowed to go out for a smoke but when a visitor came in he was expected to leave the property.
This is extremely contradicting.
I told them if you make the father leave then the mother & baby would be leaving too & they threatened to call social services.
Then I told them I had recorded the whole thing & that if they made him leave that I was posting my recording to Facebook & contacting the news.
They ganged up on us because I wanted her name to file a complaint.
This is inexcusable! How dare they treat anyone the way they treated us.
They were trying to kick Jeff out for simply speaking his mind in his regular voice because they were rude & raised there voice at him. Tori would of been there all by her self if they had kicked him out & after I left Tori needed help & they all neglected her when she needed help & she was crying.
I was brought up to treat people they way you expect to be treated.
You catch more flies with honey that you do vinegar.
I was also taught to stand up to bully’s & Christine is a bully!

This Christine S. I am just wondering how many people has she treated like this & how many more first time parents are going to have the birth of there first baby ruined by her hateful attitude. Becoming a parent is supposed to be the best experience in your life & she ruined that experience for my son & Tori.
I work in healthcare as well & I can not imagine me treating someones family member that way @ work. I would be fired on the spot.
I want something done about this. If not then I will be taking my voice recording to the news & every social media site out there as well as a copy of this explaining what we went through on the baby floor at the Saint John regional hospital.
I am also going to file a complaint with the college of physicians & surgeons of New Brunswick if this is not handled correctly. My mother gave me a friends name there to contact & if I need to that is what I will do.

St. Joseph's Hospital
Took my daughter to St. Joseph’s Hospital & they were going to send her home with just an inhaler when she has already been using inhaler & she probably has pneumonia. Didn’t offer to take an extra. When she used the maple app the medication they prescribed her didn’t help. Our health care in Canada 🇨🇦 sucks! She hasn’t been able to sleep because of the constant coughing. I got her started on vitamin D3 & C. Hopefully that helps because our health care is useless!

I’m vaccine injured from the 2 Pfizer shots I was forced to take for work. My doctor is still unwilling to admit it. I will never get another vaccine ever again.
My physical mobility was perfect now 1 year & 4 months later I am diagnosed with having Polymyalgia rheumatica plus rheumatoid arthritis.
I got my 1st shot 12/17/21,
2nd shot 02/08/22.

Now I have to take prednisone & methyotrexat. There big pharma drugs are hard on your internal organs & only treat the symptoms. They don’t fix or try to figure out the cause. 😡

On my 3rd round of prednisone. The doctor said I have Polymyalgia rheumatica. I know this is from the 2 contaminated Pfizer shots I got.
Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is an disorder that causes widespread aching, stiffness and flu-like symptoms. It is more common in women than men and is seen more often in Caucasians than other races. It typically develops by age 70 and is rarely seen in people younger than 50.
I’m not even 50 yet & my mobility was excellent until this. I’m so angry.

How fast I walk
This is how fast I walk & need to be able to walk & move to do my job without being limited from this mRNA shot that I wish I could get out of my system. This is how I have always walked & I took this video because I believe I’m mRNA injured & finished the prednisone & my joint pain, burning & weakness is coming back. I need to be able to walk & be flexible for my work. I believe that is being taking away from me after having the 2 Pfizer shot’s I was forced to take for work. I posed about that in my previous video.

Believe I am mRNA injured
I didn’t want to get the Covid shot after doing my own research but was forced to in order to keep my job as a PSW. I wasn't allowed to return to work until I had 2 mRNA shots. I got my 1st shot 12/17/21, 2nd shot 02/08/22.
June 10, 2023, I woke up with joint & muscle pain everywhere.
I have never had this before. I had pain in every joint & muscle, wrist & even the back of my head & neck. Knees bothered me because of my trying to walk while in pain.
July 19th my right foot. August 9,2023, fell flat on my face because of not being able to lift my leg over gate that I always could before & sprained my toe & it turned black & purple. August 2023 right foot swelling & then left foot.
It hurt to try to move in bed, I couldn't squat because of the pain & when I wake up after sleeping I can barely move & can’t dress myself without terrible pain. I have to try to step into my pants while sitting on the bed because it hurts to lift my legs. Couldn't get my top on or off. Couldn't even brush my hair. Everything hurt everywhere. Muscles burning & weakened, No strength to put residents compression stockings in witch I had no issues doing before. No over the counter pain medication helped whatsoever. I couldn't even get in or out, drive my car or turn my neck without pain.
October 07, 2022, prior to this I had a sciatica nerve issue that also came out of nowhere for no reason & took months to go away.
I know this is mRNA shot injury. It couldn't be anything else. I was perfectly physically fine. I'm a super fast walker & always was a extremely strong person never needing help from anyone at work or home. This prevented me from doing my job properly. Preventing me from living & enjoying life. Constant complaining about my pain & brought me to tears till i couldn't take it anymore & finally went to the hospital. I was to the point where i was thinking I can't live this way. When i told my doctor that i believed it to be vaccine injury she said "I had all my shots & boosters & I'm fine" doing a little step. I no longer have faith in doctors & want no more of their vaccines of any kind & I use to get flu shots with no issues. I do not trust any big pharma medication anymore. All they care about is money & they don't care who gets harmed in the process. All most doctors today do is treat your symptoms without trying to fix the problem. I don't want my symptoms treated, I want to be fixed as of pre mRNA shot. I'm scared of what the further outcome may be. I do not want to die or be crippled from this mRNA shot. I still have adult children & grandchildren that need me.
