Casting For Cabrilla Grouper at Bahia Los Angeles, Baja Sur.
Cabrillia Groupers are one of the most fun fish to target in the Sea of Cortez especially around Gonzaga Bay and Bahia Los Angeles. These groupers frequent the rocky shorelines and stake claim to territories around rocky outcrops. They are aggressive and extremely fun to catch by cast stickbaits as close as you can to the rocks and reeling them back close to the surface. One of the best lures we've used is the Prohunter Beito 170mm. Pretty much any color works but the regulars have favored the Redhead and Elton John colors as these seem to elicit the most aggressive strikes. In this video the Bibless BeitoHD 170mm in the Crystal Blue Mackerel color is featured. The Beito's enticing action coupled with it's dense 4.5oz weight makes for extremely long casts. even into the wind. More time in the water means more strike opportunities as these fish will often follow the lure all the way to the boat before hitting.
These fish hit hard so a sufficiently strong rod that can keep them from the rocks is absolutely essential. 65lb test braid and a shock or fluoro leader of 80lb is preferred.
Tackle used:
Prohunter Safari Multiverse 5pc Travel Casting Rod

Alligator Gar Fishing On The Trinity River with Captain Kirk Kirkland
Fishing for the prehistoric Alligator Gar on the Trinity River. An experience of a lifetime with Texas guide Captain Kirk Kirkland.
As Texas began to come out of lock down, we heard from a friend about an opening with the infamous Kirk Kirkland who guides for monster alligator gars in Texas. He is quite the legend and is usually booked a year in advance. As luck would have it the travel restrictions resulted in several of his overseas clients cancelling their trips for fear of the quarantine requirements. This species has always been a bucket list for me and we didn't waste time reaching out to him. A 2.5 hr drive through East Texas put us in Trinity, Texas where after a DQ Steak finger basket, we rested up for the next day’s fishing.
Fishing day started bright and early at 6.15am when Kirk picked us up and loaded our gear into his work horse custom built aluminum boat. We asked if we could use our own gear and he was more that happy to accommodate us. After stopping to gas up, get coffee and kolaches, we were on the water on the Trinity River by 7am. It was a beautiful morning and the river was in near flood stage from the rains the days before so Kirk decided that we should try the flats up river. A 10 minute run later we began putting out baits. It wasn't long before we had our first run. As the Alligator Gar peeled line from the Shimano Tranx loaded with 65lb Fins braid, the size and strength of these prehistoric fish even surprised Hardy Tong (owner of the Happy Buddha Restaurant in Galveston), who was a seasoned offshore tuna angler. The Ironman PE3-6 5 pc travel rod was a perfect match for the fish with its more than adequate backbone. It was powerful enough to control these fish boat side where they tend to get the most angry.
Between the 3 of us, the Ironman rod with the Tranx and the Prohunter Offshore popping rod matched with a Daiwa Isla 5000H, we made short work of 8 of these monsters. We went 8 for 13 fish that day. All fish were of course safely released. We lost 5 of them to snapped lines, broken steel leaders and pulled hooks. Quitting at 2pm for our easy drive home. What a tiring but amazing day! Scratch one species off all of our bucket lists!
We'll be back again soon but next time, targeting these brutes with even lighter tackle and lures only.

Fish Colombia Mapiri Lodge
March 2019 Guaviare River Report.
Finally I managed to find the time to complete the video of our recent trip with Fish Colombia to their Lodge on the Guaviare River. Much of the trip has been chronicled by the other members of the group so I’ll not repeat what has already been covered by Seth Hartwick, Ross Scroble and CaptArmando Alejo.
It was a trip almost a year in the making and we managed to get a great group together. A month before the trip we were advised that the rivers were low and some hiking was needed to get to the isolated lagoons for Peacocks. We were offered the opportunity to cancel our trip at that time. Unanimously we all agreed to persevere. We fully expected to rough it out being that we were headed into a remote area and sleeping in tents etc. We were pleasantly surprised that our camp was actually quite comfortable.
The journey was long..3 hours by van, 90 mins by DC3, 5 hours by long boat just to get to our staging camp at Mapiri. Hewn from the primary rainforest, chainsawed planks created a nice hardwood deck and pathways that meandered through the forest. They only took the trees that were necessary so it preserved the feel of still being in the jungle. Common areas and rest rooms were spacious and ample with rainwater collection for water. Accommodations were in spacious two man tents with portable a/c and beds. To be honest, more than we expected.
Each day we split the group into 2 and half would fish the main river and the others would fish the remote lagoons. 2 to a jonboat, with a guide, it was the perfect setup for fishing the main river. The hikes to the lagoons were quite challenging, necessitating a remote camp and overnight stay but the guys that went on it took it in their stride and were rewarded by extraordinary fishing. All told despite the reduced fishing time due to the hikes and the afternoon rainstorms, we all managed impressive numbers and quality of fish caught. Estimated over 250 peacocks landed and many more hooked. Most were 8 lbs and up with many in the 14-18 lb range. River fishing was spotty but there were days of very good action on Payaras, Sardinata, Pacu and so many types of catfish. Many species were caught including the lodge record Tambaqui. It was simply amazing and I will do it again anytime!
To cap it off, I have to add how amazing the crew of Fish Colombia were. They were always happy and cheerful, incredibly hardworking and attentive to our needs. From the moment we stepped off the plane to the day we left. The trip was made even more amazing by the group that made the trip. I have made fantastic new friends and to you guys, I just have to say that I am grateful to have shared this experience with you all. I hope you enjoy the video.
Feel free to contact me directly if you need more details about the trip, what to bring and prepare for.

Northern Yasawa Islands - Natabe Rereat and Island Way Adventures
A short review of our trip to Fiji with 30 secs video clips of where we stayed on the second part of our trip.
We spent a week at Sheraton Tokoriki before arriving at Natabe Retreat. This was our first time in Fiji and we were not quite sure what to expect. After 8 days at the Sheraton where it was a hustle and bustle of activity, music and people we were kinda looking forward to a little peace and quiet. After a few hours on the flyer we arrived at the privately owned Tavewa Island and immediately we knew we had come to the right place. Col(our host) picked us up in his runabout and transported all our luggage to the main house with his electric scooters/truck. Nicky (our hostess) had a refreshing welcome drink waiting. The next 8 days were literally filled with us doing whatever wanted - fishing, walking the beach, catching the sunsets, with out hosts guiding and keeping us very well fed. We are indeed very grateful that they had allowed us to share their wonderful home. If anyone is planning a trip to Fiji, I highly recommend venturing north to the Yasawa Islands and staying at Natabe Retreat. It's a B&B style place and nestled on the host's private island. All amazing meals meals included and and hiring out Island Way Adventures for short trips to explore the caves, diving, beach BBQ Fijian style and of course..fishing!

Slow Pitch Rod Jigging For Yellowtail. From drop to jigging to hookup to gaff.
Here's another snippet from our last trip fishing with Juan Cook at Bahia Los Angeles. Ulrick Fong shows us how to put the hurt on these super feisty Yellowtail in 250' of fast water. The Prohunter Rankaru 190g got down through the current quickly and the Slowrider PE4 slow pitch rod paired with the Accurate Fishing BV500N barely broke a sweat working these fish from the depths. Super fun set up to use that won't wear you out. Hope you enjoy the video. Please subscribe to help us make more of these videos.

Jigging and Popping at Boca Chica, Chiriqui, Panama
Great fishing in Panama's Gulf of Chiriqui. Tuna seemed late.
Finished another fun trip to Panama with the guys. This year, rather than fishing out of Cebaco, we tried something different and went further west to fish with Kerry Leggett's operation called Come Fish Panama. Kerry runs a nice operation out of Boca Chica, which is a short one hour flight from Panama City to David, and then from the airport, another one hour van ride will get you to the hotel right on the coast. This location provides convenient access to fish the smaller islands and sea mounts in the Gulf of Chiriqui. While the hotel is used to accommodating groups of loud smelly fishermen, it's definitely not your typical fishing hotel. It also caters to other eco-tourists, and has upscale amenities like an on-site restaurant, infinity pool, massage center, A/C, and daily room service. After an early morning tableside breakfast, it's just a short walk downhill to the dock and off to the fishing grounds.
Depending on the sort of fishing you want to do, inshore is as close as a 15 minute boat ride that will put you on roosters and cubera along the pristine coastline. Heading out a little further and you will reach the islands of Islas Secas and Isla Ladrones, with endless jigging spots along the way. We were able to pick up a big 25-30# african pompano on the first day jigging, and that seemed to set the tone for the rest of the 5 day fishing trip. On other days, we fished further south to Montuosa, Hannibal, and the furthest at Isla Jicarita and Jicaron, which was about a 2hr boat ride, picking up broomtail groupers, mullet snappers, silkies, and a really nice 45-50# cubera. The jig spots were anywhere from about 80-200ft, and we used an assortment of speed and flutter jigs between 100g-230g. There was current at most places, but nothing severe. 50# braid with 80# leader is probably the minimum you would want to fish with at those spots. Large cubera inhabit the deeper water reefs, so if you want to target them, bring your heavy stuff and it may be a good idea to hit the gym a few weeks before your trip. We had a few mystery fish that didn't have a problem making runs with 30# of drag pressure, leaving us scratching our heads after being snapped off. Our captain showed us a picture on his cell phone of what he said was a goliath grouper, which was about the length of his 5'11" frame, and easily twice the girth of himself. I didn't know we had goliaths on the Pacific side until I came back and looked it up, but it was massive. He caught it on a 100g jig. Highlight of the trip was we were catching quite a few of the small Amberjacks and releasing them when a MASSIVE Cubera exploded on the surface to take one of them. Looked (and sounded) like a grenade went off next to the boat!
The tuna were there, but not in large numbers yet. It seems like the season is getting pushed back a little later this year, as we didn't see the typical open ocean boils that are just begging to throw a cast into. Instead we spent an afternoon chasing them behind the commercial long liners. They were mixed in with the dolphin and would occasionally boil behind the fishing boats. This sort of fishing was like sniping, requiring you to patiently wait and shadow the commercial boat until the boil showed up; then maneuver the boat so as to not startle the pack, and make a precision 80 yard cast into a 30ft diameter boil that lasted seconds, while being careful not to snag the commercial fishing lines. Yeah, it was tough. We managed to pull only one Yellowfin Tuna about 45# out of that afternoon, and then set a course for home.
Overall, it was another great fishing trip to Panama, and the waters around Central America never seem to disappoint. Here's a short video of some of the fishing we did.
