Freedom: early flight with magical views from every angle over the Namibian open desert.
Often when we film we get the chance to fly over stunning Namibian landscapes. This time we filmed a corporate video for @Buschtrails Safaris and Bush Skys Aviation.

During a hunt, spotted hyenas often run through zebra herds to select an individual to attack.
Once selected, their prey is chased over a long distance, often several kilometres, at speeds of up to 60 km/h.
The spotted hyena is a highly successful animal, being the most common large carnivore in Africa. Its success is due in part to its adaptability and opportunism; it is primarily a hunter but may also scavenge, with the capacity to eat and digest skin, bone and other animal waste. In functional terms, the spotted hyena makes the most efficient use of animal matter of all African carnivores. The spotted hyena displays greater plasticity in its hunting and foraging behaviour than other African carnivores; it hunts alone, in small parties of 2–5 individuals or in large groups.

How do you know it's spring in Southern Africa?
Busy bees on an Albizia anthelmintica. -
The worm-cure albizia is conspicuous from July until November when its sturdy, dark, bare branches are thickly covered with large cream-coloured, powder-puff-like flowers, giving the tree an exquisitely graceful appearance. The flowers consist of numerous cream-coloured stamens up to 2,5 cm long. Quite young trees already bear flowers.
Over most of the African continent the pulverised bark of this tree is used as a cure for intestinal parasites in man and beast. The foliage is eagerly browsed and the twigs of young trees often appear severely chewed.

Little is known about Namibia’s cetaceans and much of the data that exist needs to be updated.
The Namibia Dolphin Project research focuses on gathering baseline population level data, including abundance, behavior and distribution of marine mammals and turtles to assess their conservation status.
A special request from Dr Carola Kirchner:
Please take 2 minutes to complete the survey, especially if you have no interest in fishing whatsoever.

As a fisheries scientist I am keen to understand what the current opinion and general understanding of our Namibian fisheries resource is by the general population, whether they are interested in fishing or not. Herewith some questions to guide your thinking.
Please note that all responses are totally anonymous.
If you have any other comments or questions you are welcome to write to me at carola.kirchner32@gmail.com.
Thank you for taking the time

In close proximity of an endangered Cape Cormorant on a beach near Swakopmund with the Canon C70
The endangered Cape cormorant or Cape shag is a bird endemic to the southwestern coasts of Africa. It breeds from Namibia south to southern Western Cape. In the non-breeding season, it may be found as far north as the mouth of the Congo, and also extends up the east coast of South Africa as far as Mozambique.

Playful desert lion cubs in an ephemeral river systems of Namibia. A valuable national asset.
This #shortsvideo shows the Ministry of Environment Forestry and Tourism
is engaged in a collaring exercise of lions. It is one of the ongoing activities of the ministry. The collars are to provide a scientific basis that informs decision-makers of the management of lions. They help to monitor their trends and movements, allowing communities to be warned of potential human-wildlife conflict (HWC)
With the collars, the ministry has managed to monitor the movements of lions which helps lion rangers and officials of the ministry to push and move animals from conflict areas, adding that early warnings are also given to communities and farmers to mitigate HWC.

Quick thinking action during an Eland capture for collaring and movement observation.
@CONSERVATION FILM FOUNDATION #shorts
Like yesterday's springbok collaring , this one is also part of movement data collection project by the NUST Biodiversity Centre of one of our Universities in Namibia. This was a particularly small collar on a Springbok in the Etosha Region. But it also includes Giraffe, Eland, Elephant and desert Lion. It is an ongoing project to research the spatial ecology, or the role of space in population dynamics and inter species relationships. Management of wildlife is particularly important in an environment where there are limitations such as fences and conflict with other land uses. Data collected at the Kunene site will also be used as part of the ORYCS project, which is a collaborative initiative between NUST, the University of Namibia, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, and four German institutions. In the long term the project intends to understand the link between different wildlife management practices and the health and productivity of the ecosystem.

Special footage of a 1 month old desert elephant testing strength pushing against a tree.
This video is a great first video upload to Rumble because it centres on a very special topic near to my heart: desert elephants of Namibia.
During the rainy season 2022, one month old Fiori, the first baby elephant born into the Ugab herd of the desert elephant in Namibia since 2013, tests her strength on a tree. Mum stops her and guides her along....

WOW! Shipwreck 400m inshore from the Skeleton Coast stuck in desert sand of the Namib
Eduard Bohlen was a ship that was wrecked on the Skeleton Coast of Namibia on 5 September 1909 in a thick fog. The wreck currently lies in the sand 400 m (1,300 ft) from the shoreline.
The 310-foot-long cargo ship now lies partially buried beneath the sand, destined never to complete its journey from Swakopmund to Table Bay.

SEA HARE among photosynthesising seaweeds.See oxygen bubbles being produced
The sea hare is a marine snail, found in shallow water and occasionally in rockpools on the low shore. They feed on seaweed and it is thought that this is what gives each sea hare its colour, e.g. green sea hares are eating green seaweeds like sea lettuce whilst the reddish-maroon sea hares are eating red seaweeds. Sea hares have an internal shell, which is around 4cm long and transparent. Like sea slugs, the sea hare is a hermaphrodite and they sometimes mate in chains, with an individual acting as both male and female. They lay eggs in long pink threads, which are deposited on seaweed and look a bit like pink spaghetti.

protein and salt in their diets. Other crickets are good source of these nutrients. Armoured bush crickets clean themselves meticulously, and for good reason. KUNENE ELEPHANT WALK
The northwest of Namibia is home to a unique group of elephants that are adapted to the arid environment of the Namib desert. Local communities, in order to handle the effects of climate change and prolonged droughts, increasingly use crop farming as an additional source of livelihood, as it reduces their dependency on livestock farming for food security. Destruction of these crops by elephants has however become a common issue, often resulting in human-elephant conflict (HEC). Knowledge on how to live side by side has gone lost, because of the long period in which elephants were absent from northwestern Namibia
#tosco #whynamibia #shorts #conservationfilmfoundation #ecochannelafrica
By walking a distance of 150 kilometers in 5 days through conservancies covering elephant habitats, the Kunene Elephant Walk guards aim to raise awareness on the issue and empower rural communities to live together in peace with the elephants. The funds that are raised are used towards training and HEC mitigation projects such as the construction of additional water points for elephants outside villages, and protective walls around communal crop gardens.
The walk is open to all nature and hiking lovers. The participation fee is N$500, which will go towards the fundraiser. Or join for FREE by joining the fundraiser team, and raise a minimum of N$ 1000. You will be added to our online fundraising team and get a personalised link that you can easily share with your friends, family, and colleagues on social media.
The trekking route uncovers the secrets of the Kunene region, taking you through remote, less-visited areas with spectacular sceneries, and home to a wide variety of flora and fauna:
- Day 1: Ongongo conservancy to Onganga (Otjiu-West conservancy): 30 km
- Day 2: Onganga to Ongango (Ombuijokanguindi conservancy): 30 km
- Day 3: Ongango to Epunguue (Ozondundu conservancy): 30 km
- Day 4: Epunguue to Okahua (Okangundumba conservancy): 30 km
- Day 5: Okahua to Otjozongombe (Omatendeka conservancy): 30 km
During the walk, accommodation is camping, for which there will be a backup car to carry your equipment.
