Quick video of how to properly measure your tongue weight on your vehicle. This method uses axle weights of the tow vehicle and the trailer if you have no accurate way of measuring the tongue directly. I was quite surprised that this particular boat and trailer combination is soo poorly balanced. I had moved the boat ahead at least a foot on the trailer because I felt there wasn't enough tongue weight along with storing a bunch of weight in the V-Birth. Apparently I was right and this trailer DOES need to be modified to properly suit a 1987 Hunter 23. Move the winch mast all the way forward as far as it will go, move the battery to the front of the boat, remove the outboard from the back of the boat and at that point you start to approach a more acceptable tongue weight for highway speed towing. This trailers axle is marginally rated for the weight of this boat AND the trailer itself.

1-2 meter rollers, light chop, 12-15 knot winds. Took my brother out for his first ever sail and Lake Ontario did not disappoint. The '87 Hunter 23 handled it really good, worst conditions I have ever sailed in. Learnt a lot. I was running a full main sail and a 110% Genoa on this trip; pretty much the max sail you want to run in similar conditions on this boat. We hit 8.9 kts max on a beam reach while running with the waves; the boat handled the speed very well. Raising the mast on my 1987 Hunter 23. I made a new stabilizing jig for solo mast raising and I am pleasantly surprised at how well it works.

A loop of a 30 second sailing video I made. There is no talking, banging or other noise besides wind and waves. This coming summer I will try and make a more legnthy video. The video DOES de-sync from audio at around the 30 second mark as I tried my best to align video and audio but resulted in differing clip legnths. If I get a lot of likes on this one I'll make more. light winds on this day. went out with only the main sail but quickly realized it was way too slow. accomplished 2 goals on my first solo sail: actually go out and solo sail and solo sail with both head sail and main sail up. was a perfect, low wind, day for a beginner

This is my first time attempting a heave to. It might be a little sloppy but I'm gonna keep working at it. EDIT: I tried a heave to in higher winds recently and found much improved effects by having the main sail sheeted further out, the genoa less back hauled and the rudder tied as far over as i could get it with seperate line; using a tiller tamer to lock the rudder doesn't allow it to hold at full deflection. It would seem, in this video, that both sails were catching too much wind causing the forward drift. I think the main should luff a little when hove to; it's only there to drive the boat forward and back into the wind if the bow falls off the wind/waves too far. I will update this description as i learn more about heave to's. I do heave to with just the main in bigger waves as well, i do this to drop the Genoa more safely when sailing solo.
