Silvio is famous for being the co-creator of various cryptographic technologies like zero knowledge proofs. Algorand uses a unique consensus mechanism called pure proof of stake which makes it possible to process 1000 transactions per second without sacrificing security or decentralization. Pure proof of stake involves two types of nodes: participant nodes and relay nodes. Participant nodes participate in consensus, and relay nodes facilitate the communication between participant nodes. 📰Algorand Updates📰 In November, Circle’s USDC stablecoin officially launched on the Algorand blockchain. There is currently over 100 million USDC circulating on Algorand, and an interesting total supply of 18.4 trillion. In December, Algorand partnered with Climatetrade, a carbon credits trading platform. This will see tokenized carbon credits issued and traded on the Algorand blockchain. Algorand also partnered with the SIAE, the largest Italian copyrighting agency with over 4 million copyrights which are now publicly verifiable on the Algorand blockchain. 💱ALGO Updated Tokenomics💱 For starters, the ALGO tokens allocated to all parties will now unlock over 10 years instead of 4 years. This means Algorand will need to have enough adoption to survive from transaction fees after 2030. In addition, the 2.75 billion ALGO that was reserved for future token sales will be reallocated to community incentives, governance and ecosystem support. 📉ALGO Price Analysis📉 The cause of ALGO’s poor price action seems to be something called ‘Early Backer Accelerated Vesting’. This tokenomic change was proposed by Algorand’s early backers in late November last year. Algorand’s early backers can unlock more of their remaining tokens if the price of Algo goes above the average price of Algo in the previous month. Similarly to the accelerated vesting schedule, the Algorand Foundation has its own selling scheme called ‘structured selling’. 🏦Algorand CBDC Potential🏦 In my CBDC conspiracy video, I considered the possibility that Stellar would be selected as the blockchain to host the digital US dollar. My reasoning for this was the Stellar Foundation’s close work with regulators in the United States, and its partnership with Circle which issues the USDC stablecoin that is quickly becoming a CBDC template. Some of you correctly noted in the comment section of that video that Algorand is a more likely CBDC blockchain candidate than Stellar. He wrote a piece that explains why ETH is so valuable. He wrote a blog post that looked at valuing ETH from the perspective of it's Defi disruptive force. He looked at the performance of the banks over the past 10 years and explained how they have not being able to generate any returns for their shareholders. He then takes a look at ETH based on the amount of "revenue" being gas that has been used and compared that to a price. Basing it on a median price to revenue, if ETH was to even revert back to its mean ratio, it would imply a price of over $32k and if it were to revert to its median its over 9k. You can also use these median Price-to-Revenue numbers in order to determine what price ETH would be should it only capture a small percentage of traditional Finance's market cap. I 📝 Goldman Sachs Offering 📝 Their head of commodities research was more bullish on Ethereum than Bitcoin and that was mainly down to the utility that there is on the network. That there are more use cases for it. As a commodities researcher, he holds the view that any "store of value" needs to have an alternative use case as well. There was also an internal report from Goldman that said ETH was most likely to flip Bitcoin. Goldman has also started offering Ether futures & options to their clients. 📈 Institutions Buying 📈 The most recent Coinshares Report shows that investors have been picking up products like ETPs and ETFs etc. In the week ending the first of June, funds flowing into Ether investment products was the highest of the lot. I Then, just the week after we saw that the trend continued. Flows into Ether were almost 3 times all the other flows combined. It's not only that they are buying the ETH to hold in their wallets. They are also staking this in order to earn those ETH 2.0 returns. N 🔥 EIP 1559 🔥 This is the update to the Ethereum Gas fee market that will see a dynamic "base fee" introduced. This Base fee will be determined by the market conditions and will eliminate the potential for people to bid up transaction fees by bidding up the gas fees. The most exciting thing about it though is the fact that the base fee will be burned. This means that the supply could eventually become deflationary. 🖥 ETH 2.0 🖥 This is the upgrade that will see Ethereum move to Proof-of-Stake as well as a number of other changes including sharding etc. ETH staking went live in December with the ETH 2.0 staking contract. Since that time, the total amount of ETH placed in the contract is at all time highs with over 5.5 million ETH locked up. This is important to note as the ETH that is locked in this contract is completely illiquid. These validator nodes are run by the members of the Klaytn Governance Council, and each council member must stake a minimum of 5 million KLAY coins to become a core cell operator The transactions that the CCN processes come from Endpoint Network Nodes or ENNs which do not need to stake any KLAY coins Klaytn service chains are analogous to layer 2 scaling solutions on Ethereum except they rely on the Klaytn blockchain for security and use Endpoint Network Nodes to communicate with the Klaytn chain 💸KLAY Tokenomics 💸 The KLAY coin had an initial supply of 10 billion and has an inflation rate of 300 million KLAY per year to pay for all those block rewards KLAY’s 2018 and 2019 ICOs saw 36% of its supply sold for around 138 million dollars to as little as 26 private investors. Coins sold during the ICO have vesting schedules though this could not be confirmed 📊KLAY Price Analysis📊 CoinMarketCap’s reporting of KLAY’s circulating supply supports the notion of a vesting schedule, which is actually not good when you combine it with KLAY’s inflation schedule While KLAY has a 24-hour trading volume of nearly 400 million at the time of shooting, most of this trading volume is happening on the Klayswap DEX which is a bit concerning given its lack of users 🤨 Klaytn Potential🤨 Klaytn has given minimal attention to adoption, partnerships, and even basic communication. Another key distinction is that they are considered legal tender. Incredibly, 70% of all Central Banks in the World are conducting some sort of research into CBDCs right now! That includes countries like the US, China, Sweden, Cambodia and many more. But why all the hype? There are three main reasons: ► Efficiency: increasing the ease of deploying monetary policy. ► Increasing financial inclusion: this is particularly salient in emerging markets where access to ATMs might require a walk spanning several days. ► To create or protect a form of monetary sovereignty. But here’s the question; why use blockchain for CBDCs? In a nutshell, blockchain offers a good balance between the privacy characteristics of cash and the security characteristics of deposits. 👍 Implications of a Successful CBDC 👍 We need to distinguish between the benefits for Central Banks and the broader public. In emerging markets, cash can be very hard for many people to access and involve a mammoth journey to the nearest cash machine. That can be dangerous and put people at risk of being robbed. With CBDCs, they actually have an immediate convenience and security benefit for users. To access them, all you need is a phone. I go further into the benefits of CBDCs in my vid. 🔑 Could CBDCs be key to digital currency adoption? 🔑 One of the key things holding back digital currency adoptions seems to be the lack of interfacing with the existing financial system - after all, the vast majority of people are not in crypto. That is why people claim that for any digital currency to be widely adopted, it needs to be accepted by the current financial system. The easiest way of doing that is actually by issuing a CBDC from an official actor. The Marshall Islands might be an interesting case study for that. I explain that in the video. 🏋️ CBDC Challenges 🏋️ CBDCs might seem like a no-brainer, however, there are challenges. The first is usability. This is a problem particularly in countries in an emerging market context; what happens if one of the people trying to transact doesn’t have a smartphone? How can you make payments digital for people with just a bog standard phone? The truth is that most people in the World don’t have a smartphone and this makes this challenge key if CBDCs are truly going to be widely adopted. The second, big challenge is privacy. The privacy paradox is that Central Bankers quite like the privacy preserving nature of cash as it provides resilience against the state. It is also not known which blockchain Turkey will choose for its CBDC. ✨Ukraine & Stellar✨ The Ukranian government announced earlier this year that it had partnered with the Stellar Foundation to develop their CBDC, though it appears they will not be deploying it on Stellar’s public blockchain 🍫South Korea & Klaytn🍫 The Bank of Korea recently announced that they’re officially looking for a tech company to help them test their CBDC this summer The prime candidate seems to be Klaytn, an enterprise-oriented clone of Ethereum that recently teamed up with Consensys to create a permissioned version of their blockchain for South Korea’s CBDC trials 🤝Israel & Ethereum🤝 In May this year the Bank of Israel suddenly revealed its definitive plans to issue a CBDC. It only took a month for them to begin testing their tech, and it seems like they’ve chosen Ethereum as their blockchain of choice 💶 Europe & Ethereum💶 The European Union is also looking to develop a digital Euro. This is a recent development given that the European Central Bank only jumped on the CBDC bandwagon late last fall It seems that Europe’s Central Bank has been taking notes of CBDC developments elsewhere, because they’ve already begun testing their CBDC technology on Ethereum, at least according to French officials 🌎United States & Algorand🌎 Early 2020 is when the FED really started to put CBDCs on their list of priorities. So, those credit cards are a sort of debt trap. Debit cards have the benefits of credit cards. However, you can only spend the money you have. However, the drawbacks are those merchant fees which are about 30 cents each and 3% of the transactions. Those fees are passed onto consumers. Then you have the likes of WeChat Pay that basically have no transaction fees. However, you do have to put up with the Chinese government sifting through your transactions. Do something the government doesn’t like and they’ll suspend your WeChat account! A genius way of controlling the population. 🇭🇰 Dangers of Cashless Society 🇭🇰 Turns out that a lot of people wanted to attend the pro democracy protests a little while ago. What was the main way of getting there? Public transport. In HK they have a contactless smart card called an Octopus card to pay for that. However, during the protests people switched to paying in cash as this could not be traced by the government. However, in a cashless society this would not be possible. So, this would lead to greater government control. Crypto Capital Corp is said to have worked with just about every cryptocurrency exchange in the space at some point in time, and also provided financial services to Tether. 🕵️‍♂‍iFinex, Bitfinex, Tether🕵️‍♂‍ Tether, which issues the USDT stablecoin, is the sister company to Hong Kong cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex which launched in 2013. Both are owned by a company called iFinex, which is also based out of Hong Kong and was founded in 2012. Tether, Bitfinex, and iFinex all have overlapping executives. Wells Fargo and a few other big banks severed ties with Bitfinex in early 2017, citing questionable financial practices by the exchange. This prompted Bitfinex to turn to Crypto Capital Corp. Bitfinex stored over 850 million dollars of their corporate and user funds with Crypto Capital Corp, which somehow lost every single penny. ⚖Tether Fraud Lawsuit⚖ An investigation by the New York AG found that Bitfinex used Tether’s bank balance to fill the 850-million-dollar gap left by Crypto Capital Corp, and that this transaction was facilitated and orchestrated by their parent company, iFinex. In December 2019, Bitfinex and Tether apparently handed over more than 70 thousand documents to the New York AG, and seem to have decided to start handing over the real documents following a virtual hearing in September 2020. The Supreme Court will begin examining the documents after January 15th, 2021. 📉Tether Price Manipulation Lawsuit📈 A price manipulation lawsuit was filed in October 2019 by five cryptocurrency traders who allege that cryptocurrency exchanges, namely Bitfinex, used Tether’s USDT stablecoin to manipulate the cryptocurrency market during the 2017-2018 bull run. The people behind the market manipulation suit against Tether seem to be looking to settled. This is because they reduced their initial 1.4 trillion dollar suit down to a ‘reasonable costs of suit, pre- and post-judgment interest, and reasonable attorneys’ fees’. 💵STABLE Act💵 If the Stable Act is passed, it would instantly make all stablecoins illegal, and would require stablecoin issuers to receive approval from the Federal Reserve and a handful of other government agencies if they want to resume operations. In addition, stablecoin issuers would have to obtain a banking charter, follow banking regulations, require any company using their stablecoins to cough up KYC information about their users, and keep all of the US dollars backing their stablecoins tokens at the Federal Reserve itself. 😨USDT Ban Effects😨 If USDT was banned in the United States, that ban would likely only apply to cryptocurrency exchanges based in the United States. In most cases, this is a fiat currency like the US dollar Stablecoins are able to maintain their peg thanks to two separate mechanisms The first is decentralised stablecoins that rely on collateralised debt and smart contracts to maintain their peg The second are centralised and fiat backed stablecoins that hold a certain amount of cash in a bank in order to make sure the currency is backed one to one Stablecoins are also essential for the smooth functioning of crypto markets 😨 Stablecoin Risks 😨 Perhaps the most important of these is what is more generally termed a "run on the bank". Quite simply, it is a situation where all of those who have the stablecoin in question will rush to withdraw all at the same time. This could be as a result of some sort of lack of confidence in the stablecoin. Moreover, the reserves that are backing up stablecoins are not always completely liquid. There are also a number of sparks which could lead to this "Bank run" scenario on the market. These include regulatory crackdowns and other stringent actions. 😨 China & Tether 😨 Ever since China cracked down on Yuan-Bitcoin trading back in 2017, a massive market has opened up for USDT-Bitcoin trading. Over the past 4 years, the Chinese regulators have let it slide as the market mushroomed. However, they have begun a hard crackdown on crypto in the country. China now has a strong incentive to crack down on the trading of all cryptocurrency. Mass amounts of USDT being dumped on the market could hammer its price and drive it off the peg. 💁🏻‍♂️ Fears Justified? 💁🏻‍♂️ I should point out that Tether has been under some of the most intense scrutiny over the past 2 years. After more than 2 years investigating Tether, the NYAG decided to settle with them. Then, in March of this year you had that official attestation of the reserves of Tether that was issued by Moore Cayman. These are the local subsidiaries of Moore Global - a top 20 auditing firm. Some people may have taken issue with this as they said that it was not a full audit. But then again, none of the other stablecoin issuers had done this. 🤔 Market Manipulation? 🤔 There are two academic papers that have tried to study the impact of these prints on the crypto market. The first is this study by Richard Lyons and Ganesh Viswanath. It takes a look at the price impact on cryptocurrency immediately post the issuance of a large amount of stablecoins. They used statistical analysis and they found that there was no systematic evidence that stable coin issuance affects cryptocurrency prices. ETFs take the best of both worlds by creating an asset that trades like a stock but has exposure to one or more assets like an index fund. Most ETF regulations are set by the Securities and Exchange Commission or the SEC, which is also the authority ETF funds need to register with if they want to list on an exchange. 🔐Greyscale Bitcoin Trust🔐 Like the Bitcoin ETF, the goal of the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust is to provide a way for legacy investors to get “safe” exposure to Bitcoin. GBTC functions quite literally like shares in a company. ETFs also have shares, but these shares are created or destroyed based on the supply and demand for the asset or basket of assets it represents. 🍁Canadian Bitcoin ETFs🍁 Purpose Investments listed three Bitcoin ETF’s on the Toronto Stock Exchange on February 18th. In just over two months, they have amassed over 750 million US dollars’ worth of Bitcoin. More recently, Evolve Investments and Galaxy Digital received approval for their Canadian Bitcoin ETFs, which are now backed by an additional 250 million dollars’ worth of Bitcoin. 🤼US Bitcoin ETF Candidates🤼 Just this year, at least 4 companies have filed for a Bitcoin ETF with the SEC. The first is VanEck Investments, which was the first firm to take a swing at a Bitcoin ETF, and is trying again with the help of the Chicago Board Options Exchange. The second is Valkyrie, a Texas investment firm that has been trying to get an ETF through the gates of the SEC for years. The third is the New York Digital investments group, which has filed for a Bitcoin ETF with the support of Morgan Stanley. The most recent is WisdomTree investments, which is actually a publicly traded company. Greyscale is likely to be the fifth company to file for a Bitcoin ETF. 📅 US Bitcoin ETF This Year?📅 There is really just one reason why the SEC has repeatedly rejected applications for a Bitcoin ETF, and that’s because Bitcoin was not a ‘mature asset’. This has changed significantly over the last year with companies like Paypal and Tesla entering the space, as well as many famous private investors putting their money into Bitcoin. Gary Gensler was also recently confirmed as the new SEC chair. Given that he specializes in blockchain in digital currency, it is possible he will take a more favorable stance to Bitcoin than his predecessors. 📉Bitcoin ETF & BTC Price📈 A Bitcoin ETF would likely send the price of BTC through the roof. The only problem is that this could possibly signal the top of the bull market, the same way the launch of the CME Bitcoin Futures did in December 2017. 🕵️‍♂‍Bitcoin ETF Concerns🕵️‍♂‍ Not everyone believes a Bitcoin ETF is a good idea. This is because corporations could start to have an influence within Bitcoin forks and could eventually have custody of the majority of BTC in circulation. This goes against the purpose of cryptocurrency which was to separate from the current financial system. These are funds that are designed to track an asset, a basket of assets or an Index. These funds then issue shares that individual retail investors can buy and sell easily ETFs have become incredibly popular given how easily people can purchase these shares. This can be done through a simple share trading account just like if they were purchasing the individual shares themselves. 📈 Bitcoin ETFs 📈 A fully regulated Bitcoin ETF would open the floodgate to millions more retail investors. It would allow these investors to easily gain exposure to Bitcoin through their brokerage accounts in a tax efficient way. It would also allow some of those large institutional investors that were worried of storing actual Bitcoin another avenue to invest. Previously, they had to rely on other fund structures to invest like closed-end funds etc. 🤔 Change in Tune 🤔 One of the most interesting statements that came out of the conference attended by Gary Gensler at the Aspen security conference is that the SEC is more likely to approve futures ETFs. This was quite surprising especially given the fact that the SEC warned against Bitcoin futures investing earlier this year. This caught a lot of the futures applicants off-guard and angered them. 👎 Why Future ETFs Suck 👎 When it comes to the futures backed ETFs, the fund issuer has to invest in underlying futures contracts in order to replicate the price of Bitcoin. This costs money especially as they have to constantly roll over the futures instruments to later dates. Moreover, the CME futures markets are a lot less liquid than the spot market. It's not only the costs of rolling these over but the fact that you could be getting suboptimal performance given that the fund creates demand for the futures on a roll. Moreover, there are others in the market that may try and front run these orders. This means that the price is being bid up on each roll. Futures also only trade during market hours whereas Bitcoin will trade 27/4 365. This means that there is a situation in market gaps. Moreover, you have the risk in highly volatile trading that the CME halts trading when Bitcoin itself is still actively trading. 😏 Why The SEC Likes It 😏 The SEC claims that the spot market is unregulated and that they have more oversight in the futures market. They are worried about "manipulation". This is asinine as there is so much manipulation going on in the futures market. You also have to consider the fact that the spot market will impact on the futures market. There are other theories as to why the SEC is keen on these instruments and that is because of the money that can be made on Wall Street structuring them.
