We give an overview of this device, then dive in to the details, providing an in-depth review of this climbing device from our own experience, and we include so footage and world champion tree climber Scott Forrest climbing on the Petzl Zigzag.

A huge learning experience removing this large Cottonwood with a crane
As arborists we must continue to learn and improve from every experience we have, and this job was certainly a learning experience.
Dan was the climber for this job, he has removed in the region of 20-30 trees using a crane over the span of a 17 year career. Dan explains the dangers and the goals of removing large sections with a crane, but it certainly doesn't always go perfectly. Crane jobs can be a huge amount of fun and very easy for the climber, but they can also be extremely dangerous if the climber is not familiar and educated in how to tackle crane work.
We recommend if you get the chance, attend a crane removal field day workshop if you think you will take on these kind of jobs.
Using a specifically made Crane sling kit is imperative, it makes tying the slings, balancing, and knowing the capabilities of the slings very easy. The slings I use in this video is a specially made kit fro Wesspur tree equipment that meets all required lifting operations safety standards, to check out the kit on their website click this link http://bit.ly/2tklCiR

Rock Exotica Akimbo review after 1 year
Akimbo description
The Akimbo is a mechanical pussik device that can be used in both stationary rope systems (SRS) and moving rope systems (MRS), although it is primarily used in SRS. The idea and initial design for the device came from arborist Jamie Merritt, the project of taking it to market was then taken on by Rock Exotica who tweaked and developed the one that you see in the video.
Dan goes through the design and features of the device, dialling in the friction settings, then he talks about his experiences on the device out in the real world of tree work after 1 year of ownership. Dan is also joined by his friend Dan Chamberlain who also shares his thoughts and experiences with the device.

Arborist tips and tricks | Collapsing the Petzl ZigZag chain with a micro pulley
Here are a couple of great little tips to help make gear setup and gear removal that tiny bit easier and more efficient.
In this video Dan demonstrates how to use a micro pulley above the Petzl ZigZag to collapse the zigzag chain and keep the Zigzag on the ground while installing the climbing rope.
Dan also demonstrates a technique that he uses to retrieve and pack the climbing rope into the rope bag using the zigzag or simply using a micro pulley to redirect the rope into the bag for the easiest gear retrieval possible.

Spruce tree crane removal between houses - Crane work makes for efficient work!!!
For this job we decided to use a crane to remove this Spruce tree, and drop the branches and trunk into a 30 yard disposal bin. In this particular instance a crane made the most sense, it would mean safe, efficient removal of the tree, remove the heavy and hard manual labour of removing the branches and trunk up the stairs, and it would ultimately be a fun day that kept spirits high, plus there would be no real clean up to do.

SPEEDLINE OVER HOUSE, Drone, Chainsaws = Super fun Cedar tree removal
This was a super fun Western red Cedar tree removal job. We set up a speed line to rig down all the branches over the house to save energy and time. We then blocked down the upper two thirds of the main trunk, and finally felled the bottom 25-30 foot of main trunk.
This job ran super smoothly with great, clear communication, understanding of the job and a great rigging setup.
We are stoked to have captured this entire job using a drone and 4 GoPro cameras.

Climbing Arborist Podcast Ep 19 - with Dave Stice
Nice guy Dave joins me on this podcast to talk about the recent 'Aerial Rescue Challenge' competition/event that was the brainchild of Dave with the backing from Wesspur.
This was an idea Dave had for about 20 years, and it was heavily focused on determining injuries, what the best course of action is, what is paramount to be done in the tree and what injuries can be dealt with once on the ground.
Dan shares his experiences from a competitior, and Dave shares his thought about the organization and what he saw througout the weekend.
We also talk about the systems we had to use during the competition, always being on two indepentent climbing systems (or using a backup), and when and how this might become the standard in arboriculture.
Thanks to all of those who but time, effort and money into making the aerial rescue competition the huge success that it was.
