Inspired by Explosions&Fire's recent video. Titanium metal cannot be melted in an atmosphere containing oxygen (see refinement process required and how people work with Titanium metal). Heating does result in oxidation, if you start with a powder and heat it it begins to oxidise in a more "controlled" manner rather than just spitting flames everywhere. #Science #Metal #Chemistry

This video we look at some of the interesting metal complexes formed in acid conditions. The Titanium 4+ complex which is stabilised depends on pH but it is not clear what is being formed. Precipitation of Copper iodide CuI by the addition of Potassium iodide KI to Copper Sulfate CuSO4.

HCl is dropped into a solution of Sodium Chromate (Na2CrO4) and 30% Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2). Upon acidification the rare Chromium peroxo complex CrO5 is stabilised producing a deep blue colour. #shorts

It has been described that Iron metal and Iron salts can be oxidised to form the Fe6+ ferrate complex ion solution by OCl- under alkali conditions. FeCl3 was first synthesised from Iron oxy-hydroxide and HCl. NaOH and Bleach was added before gently heating. The result is some light-brown precipitate and pale brown solution.

Table sugar (sucrose) is added to a solution of potassium permanganate (KMnO4) under alkaline conditions (NaOH). As KMnO4 is reduced the observed colour is changed from the deep pink to brown of MnO2. KMnO4 is reduced through a relatively complex sequence with the oxidation of sucrose which is observed by the change in colour.

A simple one pot procedure for the preparation of copper hydroxide and Schweizer's complex from copper sulfate and ammonium hydroxide (ammonia solution).

A concentrated solution of potassium iodide is added to 40% HNO3.

Lower oxidation states tend to be energetically favourable for metal oxides at higher temperatures. Here Pb(IV) is partially reduced to Pb(II) forming the yellow PbO.

These bolts are made from high carbon steel so the end product will contain some C and Mn and trace amounts of other elements.
