“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).
EACH NAME IS AN ASPECT OF HIS CHARACTER.
NAME # 1: WONDERFUL COUNSELOR
Literally this title means “a wonder of a counselor.”
It speaks of the wisdom of His plan.
The writers of the Old Testament used it for acts of God which man cannot understand.
“Wonderful Counselor indicates that Jesus will be a supernatural source of extraordinary wisdom — amazing news for those who need guidance.
NAME # 2: MIGHTY GOD
This speaks of the “Power of Accomplishment.”
It is first of all a statement of deity.
The word translated “Mighty” is a military term that means, “the powerful, valiant warrior.” He is the God who fights for us.
NAME # 3: THE EVERLASTING FATHER
Literally “the Father of Eternity.” Eternally a Father to His people.
As the Father of Everlasting we can trust Him even at the most difficult points in life, especially as life comes to an end, because He can give us eternal life.
NAME # 4: PRINCE OF PEACE
The phrase means “the Prince whose coming brings peace”
His coming to earth made peace with God
Those who come to Him find peace in their heart
When He comes again, He will usher in a kingdom of peace
WHAT HIS NAMES MEAN TO US TODAY
If you are confused . . . He is the Wonderful Counselor.
If you are weak . . . . . . He is the Mighty God.
If you are scared . . . . . He is the Everlasting Father.
