Yes, I have to say it is heartbreaking to see footage of a friend's sailboat burning and quickly disappearing to the bottom of the sea, and without a reasonable explanation of what happened.. but this sailboat caught fire when the diesel engine suddenly raced out of control until it was superheated and started the engine room on fire.. and without warning, while the boat was at sea. Our hearts go out to Fred in this terrible aftermath of having suffered the loss of his boat completely, and we hope we can find cause and resolution to hopefully avoid the same from happening to anyone else. Stay tuned as I'll post an update after I have more information from a company that can help prevent this exact scenario from happening on just about any diesel engine. In this episode, we cross paths with a very shallow reef system in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, with 2 tiny islands owned by Colombia called the Albuquerque Cays. They are rumored to be very beautiful, but have always been off-limits since we've been sailing in Colombia waters.. but we heard that there might be a possibility to visit if we are respectful of operations there, so we decide to douse our sails and pay the islands a visit and see what happens! For years I have used BALMAR Alternators on my sailboats for bulk charging of battery banks, that's why when it was time to rebuild a new charging system for our new BETA MARINE diesel engine onboard 'SOPHISTICATED LADY", I went back to BALMAR to see what they would recommend. Thanks again for all your support in achieving this goal of replacing our engine with a brand new 85Hp Turbo Diesel engine from BETA MARINE USA! The first sea trials went perfectly today, no problems found, and smooth as silk so we spent a couple hours chilling in the beautiful turquoise waters of Haynes Cay here in San Andres, Colombia, before returning to anchor for the first time in over a month! A very big project for us has finally come to fruition, the replacement of our old Perkins engine with a brand new 85Hp Turbo Diesel engine from BETA MARINE USA!
