Three years into his tenure and after taking an oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution, Superintendent Charles Foust renounced the Constitution at an agenda meeting while discussing a policy proposal aimed at prohibiting the teaching of radical ideas such as overthrowing the U.S. government. Foust expressed strong opposition to adopting this policy, asserting that the Constitution was not intended for him. During the February 2024 WECT candidate town hall, Nikki Bascome expressed that although Superintendent Foust of New Hanover County may have engaged in questionable things, she does not believe it is the appropriate time to terminate his employment. At the 2024 WECT school board candidate town hall, Aubrey Tuell's stance on dismissing New Hanover County Superintendent Foust was unclear. She mentioned having feelings about the issue but didn't specify them, then discussed a bullying chain from the district's central office to teachers, which confused listeners. Despite the discussion, Tuell never clearly stated whether she would vote to fire Foust if elected to the NHCS school board.
