In Exodus 19, Moses resumes the chronological narrative. Now in the third month since leaving Egypt and having just defeated the Amalekites (Chapter 17), the Israelites camp “before the mountain” (Mt. Sinai) in the Wilderness of Sinai. As God prepares them to receive His Law, he instructs Moses to tell the people, “Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation” (Exodus 19:5-6a). God demonstrates His powerful, holy presence from the mountain with terrifying thunder, lightning, and smoke, and earthquakes, He commands Moses to ascend the mountain and then to “Go down and warn the people, lest they break through to gaze at the Lord, and many of them perish” (Exodus 19:21). This section of scripture is referred to as the Mosaic Covenant where the people are forbidden to directly approach God and are commanded to obey the law which they agree to do. Moses then receives the Ten Commandments directly from God atop Mt. Sinai (Exodus 20), and Pastor Kevin explains their applicability to us today and the consequences of our culture’s rejection of God’s law. As prophesied in Jeremiah 31, fifteen hundred years later Jesus came to establish the New Covenant whereby man could come to God through faith in Jesus, where the worshiper receives forgiveness of sin. In Chapter 18, we see an interaction between Moses and his father-in-law, Jethro, who comes from Midian to meet Moses in the wilderness, bringing Moses’ wife and two sons with him. Upon hearing of “all the good which the Lord had done for Israel” (Exodus 18:9), Jethro proclaims, “Now I know that the Lord is greater than all the gods” (Exodus 18:11). Observing Moses’ burdensome duties in ruling over the peoples, Jethro counsels Moses to delegate these duties in a way that provided a pattern for the legal system outlined in our own Constitution. The model also provides a pattern for teaching God’s ways within the church and within the family. Exodus 34 concludes, “And whenever the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face shone, then Moses would put the veil on his face again…” (Exodus 34:35). Under the Old Covenant, though glorious, the veil was a necessary a barrier between a holy God, as reflected in the shining face of Moses after spending time in God’s presence, and sinful people. The Apostle Paul tells us that “the veil is taken away in Christ” (2 Corinthians 3:14), because the superior glory of the New Covenant provides believers the imputed righteousness of Jesus and thus free access to God through faith. As a result, we, with unveiled faces, “beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord” (2 Corinthians 3:18). In this final message of Pastor Kevin’s three-part teaching on God’s instructions for building the tabernacle, we see in Exodus 40 the final assembly of the tabernacle nearly one year after the Israelites departed from Egypt. Drawing from related passages in both the Old and New Testaments, Pastor Kevin shows how the tabernacle’s physical layout, as well as the purification ceremonies for preparing the tabernacle and priests for service, symbolized God’s way of access to Him through faith in His Son Jesus. In today’s study, we witness God’s wrath as He tells Moses, still atop Mt. Sinai, of His intent to wipe out the idolatrous Israelites in the camp below who are now worshipping a golden calf of their own making. Chapter 25 begins with God’s instructions for constructing a tabernacle as a place of fellowship with Him under the terms of the Old Covenant, which the people have promised to obey. Pastor Kevin shows from both the Old and New Testament that the tabernacle and later, Solomon’s temple in Jerusalem, comprised both a copy of heavenly things and a foreshadow of a New Covenant with Jesus as our Mediator. In today’s passage, we overhear another conversation between God and Moses as Moses intercedes on behalf of the people after their idolatrous worship of the Golden Calf. What does it mean when Moses pleads with God, “Yet now, if You will forgive their sin — but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written" (Exodus 32:32)? Pastor Kevin shows how this could refer to God’s Book of Life and draws from other Scriptures about the Book of Life to explain what Moses means. We see how this conversation again demonstrates that God has and will keep all His promises to the Jewish people, despite their frequent rebellion and eventual rejection of Messiah Jesus. In the same way, God in His grace and mercy, keeps His promises to those who come to Him on His terms today, which is faith in Jesus. Having just received God’s miraculous provision of manna in Exodus 16, the Israelites set out on their wilderness journey. Finding no water at their camp, they quickly complain to Moses (Exodus 17:1) instead of asking God for help. Moses admonishes the people that their complaints are against God, not himself, replying, "Why do you tempt the Lord" (Exodus 17:2)? Pastor Kevin draws on the life of King Asa and other accounts in Scripture that show how God faithfully answers those who call upon Him in faith in contrast to those who rely upon man instead of God. The very existence of the Jewish people 3,500 years later, living once again in the land that God promised them, testifies to God’s faithfulness, His awesome works on behalf of the Jewish people, and the truth of Scripture. Exodus 16 relates the familiar account of God’s provision of manna for the Israelites to sustain them on their journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. In Exodus 24, Moses recites and records in writing all the laws of the preceding chapters, the people promise to obey, and the nation formally enters into the Mosaic Covenant with God through animal sacrifice. “Moses took the blood, sprinkled it on the people, and said, ‘This is the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you according to all these words’” (Exodus 24:8). Pastor Dustin explains how the Mosaic covenant ceremony pre-figured the New Covenant, which Jesus ratified with His own blood, saying to His disciples at the last supper, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me” (1 Corinthians 11:25). The end of Exodus 20 gives Commandments Five through 10, which govern our human relationships with each other. Together with the first four, which govern our human relationships with God, the Ten Commandments of Exodus 20 reveal God as holy, just, and loving and served to help establish a just and orderly society in the new nation. Even though imperfectly obeyed throughout Israel’s history, they did help preserve the Jewish race to the present day. Chapter 20 concludes with additional requirements and prohibitions for worshipping this holy God. Though Christians are not under the Mosaic Law, Pastor Kevin explains that the principles and prohibitions against idolatry and sexual immorality apply to us today. In Chapter 21, God establishes additional laws to guide the Jewish people as they settled in the Promised Land, including the law of the bondservant, manslaughter, parent-child relationships, kidnapping, and personal injury offenses. In consideration of the times and culture, we see that in each case, God’s laws were just and protective, especially of those who are most vulnerable in any society, women, and children. In this teaching, we learn how Stephen’s martyrdom began a frenzy of Christian persecution to which God used as a launching pad to spread the Gospel outside the city of Jerusalem to Samaria and Judea. Persecution divides the church necessarily cutting away the dross and strengthening what is left. In the fury of persecution in which Saul of Tarsus played a leading role, a fellow Hellenist Christian by the name of Philip, in whom was filled with the Holy Spirit, was sent to Samaria to preach the Gospel and work the gifts of miracles. During a revival in Samaria the Lord decided to send Philip south to Gaza where he divinely happened upon an Ethiopian eunuch whom was dedicated to the worship of the God of Israel and the searching of the Scriptures. Philip the Evangelist takes full advantage of the inspired situation. The Truth prevails as the Gospel goes forth into Gentile lands and peoples.

Within just the first few weeks following the crucifixion, resurrection and ascension of Jesus, those in Jerusalem saw multiple manifestations of the Holy Spirit’s power in the Apostles to perform miracles and to boldly testify of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. “And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women” (Acts 5:14 NKJV). In today’s passage, we see the religious leaders again attempting to stop their preaching, but God miraculously delivers the imprisoned apostles and commands them to “Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this life" (Acts 5:20 NKJV). Pastor Kevin draws forth important truths from these few verses about the holiness of God, His high demands for absolute integrity and obedience in His followers, the Personhood and deity of the Holy Spirit as one member of the triune Godhead, and how Jesus’ crucifixion redeemed those who believe in Him from the curse of the law. In Exodus 34, Moses again ascends Mt. Sinai with new tablets of stone, and God Himself writes on them “the words that were on the first tablets which you broke” (Exodus 34:1). God then renews the covenant with the Jewish people, proclaiming, “I will do marvels such as have not been done in all the earth… For it is an awesome thing that I will do with you” (Exodus 34:10). The very existence of the Jewish people 3,500 years later, living once again in the land that God promised them, testifies to God’s faithfulness, His awesome works on behalf of the Jewish people, and the truth of Scripture. Pastor Kevin exhorts us to remember that despite the wonder, wisdom, and uniqueness of God’s covenant with Israel, its greatness cannot compare with that of the New Covenant, under which all believers enter into personal fellowship with the LORD God who is “merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth” (Exodus 34:6).
