Episode 62: Sean and Kilian Duclay, Founders of SailAhead
This week we welcome Sean and Kilian Duclay, founders of SailAhead. Early in their lives, Sean and Kilian recognized the importance of supporting the veteran community. Shocked by the staggering statistics surrounding veteran suicide, they chose not to be bystanders in the war at home. They turned to their passion for sailing, and SailAhead was born. SailAhead's mission is three-fold; use sailing and the ocean as a therapeutic platform to foster healing in our military community, spread post-traumatic stress (PTS) and veteran suicide awareness, and to honor and remember their "Mates". Sean and Kilian carry the names of the men and women lost to veteran suicide, their "Mates", as they execute the critical goal of SailAhead, preventing veteran suicide. Whether it's taking veterans out on the water to learn to sail, or providing emergency support for local races, Sean and Kilian have quickly grown SailAhead's sphere of influence, and they aren't planning on stopping anytime soon. So join us for a conversation fit for the open water, and learn the meaning behind SailAhead's "219" with this week's episode.

This week we welcome Alexa Modero, the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Backpacks For Life. Backpacks For Life’s mission is to provide a unique and personalized support system for homeless and at-risk veterans who are struggling to reintegrate into civilian life. Through their two main programs, backpack distribution and coaching/mentoring, they are able to effectively support and empower veterans, reigniting the flame to live and succeed inside of them. Episode 56: Joseph Zoleta, Founder of the Black 6 Project and Black 6 Coffee Trading Company
This week we welcome Joseph Zoleta, founder of the Black 6 Project and Black 6 Coffee Trading Company. Joseph takes us on an amazing adventure that started in the early 80's in the Philippines. At just five years old Joseph immigrated to the United States, and settled in Queens, NY. Under the shadow of the City That Never Sleeps, he assimilated into his new culture, and, along with his family, began to build a life through the American dream. Like so many New Yorkers, Joseph was changed forever on 9/11, when, from his home, he could see the smoke billowing from the Twin Towers. It was at that moment, Joseph decided to join the fight. He enlisted in the Marine Corps, and by 2002 was headed to boot camp. After multiple tours in Iraq, Joseph separated from the military and the next chapter of his life began. He found a new mission and continued to serve as an EMT, and then as a paramedic. Joseph was soon paired with former Navy corpsman, David Guzman. While sitting in their ambulance and enjoying a simple conversation, Joseph and David came up with the idea for the Black 6 Project. The Black 6 Project is an organization that looks for volunteers that have the motivation to serve for the greater good. It is an organization that can pool its resources of motivated individuals and bring care to those in need anywhere in the world. This led the team to also create Black 6 Coffee Trading Company, which helps fund their humanitarian efforts. Their passion for coffee is only surpassed by their desire to use their medical skills to help those in need. By sharing their love for coffee with the world, they invite you to take the journey with them to the remote villages, the river crossings, and the uncertain trails where people do not have access to good healthcare. So sit on your back porch, pour yourself a fresh cup, and enjoy this week's episode.

Episode 54: Major Tom Schueman and the Story of Zak, an Afghan Interpreter Rescued
This week we welcome Major Tom Schueman, founder of Patrol Base Abbate. Maj. Schueman shares a story of brotherhood and commitment, personified by the acts of heroic veterans during the drawdown and exit from Afghanistan. Like so many veterans, Maj. Schueman's mission to rescue his interpreter, Zak, was an example of an American service member's promise to his allies. Zak, and his family, braved the a trek from Kunar, through Taliban controlled territory, to Kabul. Once there, Maj. Schueman financed their stay in a small apartment as they repeatedly tried to gain access to Hamid Karzai International Airport. On the third day of chaos, with the help of military members on the ground, contacts back in the United States, and a fearless Afghan driver, Tom got the word that he had been waiting for, "We have them". We commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11 with this story of hope, and the example of what it means to be a GWOT veteran.
We also discuss the mission of Patrol Base Abbate. PB Abbate offers free-of-cost retreats in "Big Sky Country" for service members and eligible veterans, where they can reconnect with their warrior spirit, foster community through shared interests, and re-discover purpose in service to each other, their families, and their communities. Episode 45: Dr. Tiffany Tajiri, Author of Peace After Combat
This week we welcome Dr. Tiffany Tajiri, board certified psychologist and author of Peace After Combat: Healing the Spiritual and Psychological Wounds of War. For so many science and faith are held at arm's length from one another, but Dr. Tajiri combines the two worlds in what she calls "Rhythm Restoration". This method is a combination of RHYTHM for soothing, BILATERAL STIMULATION for psychological digestion, and positive VISUALIZATION for the re-scripting of painful experiences. She walks us through a gritty, and honest, look at what combat veterans are faced with when they return home. Each chapter, of Peace After Combat, illustrates a common situation facing our service members, and how faith can be the catalyst for healing. The novellas combine to answer the question, "Where is God in war?" Dr. Tajiri also talks about her non-profit, Stand-Up and Recover; providing health and hope to military veterans, and family members, through education of behavioral health resources, retreats, excursions, and spiritual counseling. Whether you are a believer, or not, Dr. Tajiri's insight and message supports the idea that "God is Love'', and let's be honest the world needs a lot more of that!
Peace After Combat: Healing the Spiritual and Psychological Wounds of War available everywhere July 1st.

Episode 41: Col. Steve Miska, Author
This week we welcome fellow Long Islander Col. Steve Miska, author of Baghdad Underground Railroad. Steve served as an officer in the United States Army for 25 years before retiring in 2015. During his second of three combat tours in Iraq, Steve led a team that established an underground railroad from Baghdad to Amman to the United States for dozens of foreign military interpreters who supported U.S. troops in-country. Baghdad Underground Railroad is an intimate glimpse at the significant risks that foreign military interpreters face to support U.S. interests, and the brotherhood that develops between service members and interpreters as a result. Steve offers a stunning, first-person account of how he and his teammates worked to overcome policy failures and broken promises and protect America’s most reliable combat partners: foreign military interpreters. Above all, Steve presents an exploration of universal questions about hope, brotherhood, and belonging -- questions that strike at the heart of who we are as a people and as a nation. Most of all, Steve confirms the ultimate truth...when you need help, you call your Mother!
