In 2007, the organisers of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tatttoo staged a Mini Tattoo for visitors and residents to enjoy the show who may or may not have managed to get a ticket to the annual event on Edinburgh's castle esplanade. The Mini Tattoo was a 1 hour show featuring performers from the main event at the castle.
This segment features the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force Steel Orchestra who have visited Edinburgh on numerous occasions, first in 1997 followed by their welcome second visit in 2000 before returning on demand delighting audiences in 2005, 2007. 2014 and 2023, 2007 being a special year indeed as there was not one but two mini tattoo performances. I went to both and filmed at each event.
This video is an edit of the two where the performances were the same but band wore a different uniform which made editing really challenging. Therefore you will notice that in some of the shots the band wears a light green uniform where other shots show them wearing grey fleeces. This was an amusing problem for me in the edit suite where I had to just bare and grim it as I only had one camera filing their performances at any one time. I guess they were cold on the second day!
The Trinidad & Tobago Defence Steel Orchestra and Drums is the official army band of the countries of Trinidad and Tobago, islands in the carribean. The band's instruments are known as pans, made of old oil barrels. To create the pans, the upper part of an oil barrel gets chopped off and then is hammered to create indented areas of different sizes. It's a unique instrument as it's one of the few that creates different sounds within one area of play. The pan is known widely for being the nation's national instrument.

The Royal Artillery Band has been based in Woolwich, South East London since the year 1763 which is the home of the Royal Artillery from 1716. The band is one of eight state bands which provides musical support for state and ceremonial functions within London, England's capital as well as for the Royal Artilley both at home within the UK and abroad.
Back in 1557 at St Quinten, the Band used Fifes and Drums however the regiment had a desire to have a Band of Musick which eventually lead to the formatio of te Royal Artillery Band in 1762 in Minden, Germany. The band then grew from eight musicians where the band members were trained to play both wind and string instruments and by the 1960's the band had over one hundred musicians. The Royal Artillery at the time of the video's recording were involved in around three hundred engagements which the band undertakes annually while during conflict they provide non-medical support to the Army Medical Services.
The Light Cavalry Band was formed in 2006 following a re-organisation of the Corps of Army Music. The band is one of two Royal Armoured Corps Bands which is based in Bovigton, Dorset where it's based to support the Queen's Royal Hussars, The King's Royal Hussars, The Light Dragoons, The 9/12th Royal Lancers Prince of Wales and the Queen's Royal Lancers.
The band provides musical support to those field regiments though the band also has a military role. Several members of the band served as medical assistants during the first Gulf conflict as well as in Kosovo and in recent times have had a role of Chemical Decontamination Area support during Operation Telic.
Cavarly Regiments have fought in almost every conflict from the Battle of Waterloo and Battle of Balaclava, The Charge of the Light Brigade to 20th century battles such as the Battle of the Somme and Battle of El Alamein.

Along with The Rifles, The Royal Regiment of Scotland is also one of only two line infantry regiments to maintain its own regular military band within the Corps of Army Music, which was formed through the amalgamation of the Highland band and Lowland band of the Scottish Division. In addition, there are two Territorial bands, The Highland Band and The Lowland Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, which are administered by the regiment's two Territorial battalions.

The Middlesex County Volunteer Fifes and Drums were formed following America's bicentennial celebration with it's first appearance in 1982 and today is recognised as one of the world's finest fife and drum corps.
Their classic American sound has entertained audiences from Boston to Versailles, Williamsburg to Salzburg and Edinburgh and beyond.
The band features a unique composition of folk and classically trained musicians who collaborate in performance and recordings with various emsembles including the Boston Camerata, the Tanglewood Festival Orchestra and Chorus, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops.
The band were the feature ensemble to attend the Basel Tattoo in 2005 and were the very first fifes and drums to appear at the Edinburgh Tattoo. Their uniforms on parade are authenticate dress reproductions of the New England regiments of the Continental Army from 1779.
The band was established as a reminder of days when no public celebration was complete without the sound of fifes and drums with the volunteers also acting as a poignant tribute to sacrifices made in the struggle for America's independence.

The Band of the Blues and Royals was formed in the year 1661 from members of the what has now been disbanded the cavalry of the New Model Army. The Regiment was given the nickname of the Oxford Blues as a result of their first Colonel, the Earl of Oxford and also because of their blue uniforms.
During those early years the band featured kettle drummers with trumpeters and they wore heavily embroidered and gold laced frockcoats which look very similar to the present day state dress. This includes a black velvet jockey cap which was introduced during Queen Victoria's reign.
A pair of solid silver kettle drums which were presented in 1805 by King George 3rd are still in use today and are carried by the Drum Horse while being played by their mounted drummer on the Queen's Birthday Parade and on Horse Guards parade.
The band requires all members to undertake an intensive five month long Household Cavarly Equestrian Course. The Band travels across the whole of the UK and overseas providing state trumpeters, marching and concert bands, salon orchestra and small ensembles. They perform at major state and ceremonial occasions including The Ceremony of the Garter, state banquets and Investitures at Buckingham Palace.
In more recent times the band has seen active service in both Gulf conflicts within their operational roles while supporting medical units.

The video was one of the last I filmed and recorded using a Hi8 camcorder I was gifted by a member of the Edinburgh Cine and Video Society who I had been a member of for many years while living in Edinburgh.

The Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force is the military organisation responsbile for the defense of the twin island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. It consists of the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment, the Coast Guard, the Air Guard and the Defence Force Reserves.
The Regiment provides the majority of the musicians assigned to the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force Steel Orchestra which is the world's first and only military steel band. The TTR is structured like a light infantry brigade with a pair of infantry battalions, plus engineering and logistic support units.
I love watching and listening to the steel band music. If your lucky to see a performance where audience members asked to stand up and dance, take part and you'll have a right laugh. The band were also seen at the 2007 Edinburgh Festival Cavalcade, an annual parade that takes place in Edinburgh.

Alone [Short Film] – Filmed in Hawick, Scottish Borders – Student Film Production
'Alone' is a short film filmed in the Scottish Borders. I wrote and Directed the short for one of my college course units and the production was really an experiment with audio and images which I was encouraged to make where I have received some positivity from friends and family to create more content. The film includes a whole host of hidden messages which I challenge you to discover for yourself when watching.
💡 Question of the Day:
Have you ever produced a film you created yourself? What challenges did you face?

For my edit own programme unit, I decided to use my experimental film 'Alone' which I filmed in October in Hawick. The film is an experimental piece which was shot very quickly without much script preparation beforehand so the process was similar to a 24/48 competition event.
The editing began with getting used to AVID for the first time which isn't too difficult to use, once you know what you are doing.
The first rough cut of the film was running eight minutes and I began to cut out shots which were slowing down the pace of the film and not telling the audience anything. Shots included a character walking into a door and then a second where one of the door shots was taken out to speed up pace.

The doors open day event is a brilliant opportunity for anyone interested in seeing what work goes on behind the scenes at their Central Depot based on Annandale Street where a number of vehicles were on display for members of the public to board.
As part of the day of activities, visitors could ride a bus which took you through the Depot's bus wash where you could experience first what it's like to go through without the need to get wet. There was also remote control bus racing which proved popular with younger children. In 2016, the Lothian Buses Doors Open event supported a number of charities which included Poppy Scotland and Guide Dogs Scotland where visitors could leave a donation within buckets at the doors.
During this year's event, a number of vintage buses ran on the service sixteen between Newhaven and Lothian Road featuring a number of buses which had served the company over the years before being replaced by modern wheel chair friendly replacements.
It was fanastic to see so many people travelling across part of the network on many of the vintage buses taking part in the event where visitors could experience travelling with a bus conductor on board. One hundred volunteers helped out on the day to ensure the event was a success and five thousand pounds was raised for charities.
The event was a massive success and an estimated 10,000 people enjoyed the whole day of activities. Limited edition merchandise was available as well as the opportunity to get a friend or relative's competing with one another as they tackle mini bus racing.
The Doors Open Day event held in Edinburgh forms part of a City wide event called Doors Open Days which is Scotland's biggest architectectural free event which takes place every year. For only a single weekend, hundreds upon hundreds of buildings normally closed to the public are opened for the public to view.

The doors open day 2017 with vintage running day event was a fantastic opportunity for anyone interested in learning a bit more about Lothian Buses and Edinburgh City Transport. This year event features a display of vintage buses and modern vehicles.
A chance to learn more about the company's history while sitting on an open top bus taking in a garage tour. There was also bus racing and the chance to take a trip through a bus wash as well as taking part in edinburgh bus tours.
Equally exciting was their Lothian Buses Doors Open Day Event vintage running event which made a return where vehicles operated on the 26 service featuring older vintage buses between Atholl Crescent and Joppa Place, Eastfield, Edinburgh.
A chance to see behind the scenes while taking a trip of nostalgia on one of their vintage buses. Popular with passengers, families of all ages, and many transport enthusiasts visiting Lothian Buses Central Depot. Present were the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Police Scotland. Lothian Buses merchandise was available as well as the opportunity to get your name programmed onto a bus destination screen.

Video features Massed Commonwealth Highland Dancers which includes the Edinburgh Military Tattoo Highland Spring Dancers who are joined by Highland Dancers from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa.
The Massed Commonwealth Highland Dancers were originally assembled by Tattoo Dance Director, Billy Forsyth MBE to help mark a celebration of Her Majesty the Queen's Golden Jubilee at the 53rd Edinburgh Tattoo in 2002. They combined again this year to pay tribute to the Queen's Diamond Wedding Anniversary.
The Edinburgh Tattoo Highland Spring Dancers were formed in 1992 who have delighted audiences both at home and overseas with their colourful and exciting performances of traditional Scottish dances which featured a contemporary component. This year's display marks the Queen's 60th wedding anniversary through a series of kaleidoscopic Diamond dance patterns. Their routine also features dance extracts from famous Royal Balls and also form to represent an Edinburgh landmark the Heart of Midlothian.
Ozscot Australia Highland Dancers were established in 2000 and performed for the first time at the Tattoo in 2002 then again in 2004 who took part in an item called Wings marking that year's RAF theme.
The Canadian Highland Dance team also features and was chosen specifically to represent Canada at this year's production. Dancers from the team come from across the province of Nova Scotia.
South African Highland Dancers are drawn from a range of different cultural backgrounds and can be traced back to Scottish settlers in South Africa where Scots taught their dance forms to children of all ages.

Their classic American sound has entertained audiences from Boston to Versailles, Williamsburg to Salzburg and Edinburgh and beyond.
The band features a unique composition of folk and classically trained musicians who collaborate in performance and recordings with various emsembles including the Boston Camerata, the Tanglewood Festival Orchestra and Chorus, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops.

After completing my Rotary Youth Leadership Award, I took part in a charity walk across a segment of Hadrians Wall to raise money for young women in Nepal who need special care. I managed to raise £200 from local friends and neighbours which was a big help. The experience of the walk really came about while I was doing my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award Residential project, sponsored by the Portobello Rotary Club.
The Youth Leadership Award is a very successful youth programme run by worldwide Rotary clubs. It's for 14 to 30 year olds giving future leaders the chance to get a head start at an early age. Young people attend a presentation, camp or a workshop for between three and ten days in length which is organised and run by Rotary club members.
The programme gives young people and young adults the chance to improve their leadership skills and communication skills, learning about business, exploring career paths, sharing ideas and experiences. It's also about taking part in community voluntary projects.
During my experience, I received a rescue dog demonstration by the Killin Mountain Rescue Team. Members of the 2007 team also took part in the 2007 Edinburgh Festival Cavalcade in Edinburgh. The RYLA adventure was part of the district 1020. It took place at the Abernethy Ardeonaig Adventure Centre in Perthshire.

Reflecting back on this I really hate it for a number of reasons. I clearly have not yet discovered hair gel and wax not to mention having a terrible dress sense. I do remember that I felt very unhappy at the time this was shot and I feel it clearly shows. I would loved to have had another crack at this and not come across so stiff and if I were to do it again I'd try using a few props as well!
I came up with a rushed random name for this piece called Al's top five which I still find pretty uninspiring today. The piece was designed to bring viewers the best in popular gaming and film where I provide a sneak peek of some of my favorites.
Well known IP's include Grim Fandango by Lucas Arts which features a land beyond life and death, where people are in a constant limbo unable to reach heaven or hell. I discuss Manny, a poorly paid worker of the dead.
I then go on to discuss Star Wars which was released in 1977 and produced by George Lucas and also the sequel to Steven Spielberg's epic Jaws called Jaws 2 released in 1978.
Moving on to discuss videogames I discuss the classic videogame called Myth the Fallen Lords a real time strategy game released by Bungie back in 1997 which was released on the PC and Mac where gamers would participate in a number of Lord of the Rings style battles. We then get a glimpse of the game via one of the game cutscenes.
Finally I discuss the hugely successful game Broken Sword Shadow of the Templars featurng American Tourist, George Stobbart and Photo Journalist Nico Collard which is a point and click adventure game relased by Revolution Software originally in 1996.

For the past year I've bee doing freelance work and I've started up my own company as a sole trader where I've working on a few projects. Prior to studying at University I studied at Jewel and Esk College for two years where I got my Higher National Diploma HND in Film, Television and Video Production.
My first week at University was very social. Reflecting back I had spent alot of time on my own not really spending much time with people my own age. In fact most of the people I had been spending time with had been mostly older adults because I've involved with things such as Business Gateway
workshops where most partipants were older than me. I've found myself suddenly with groups of around twenty people my own age which I've not experienced for sometime.
For my furst week everyone was just getting to know each other and receiving our matriculation cards. The first day was a challenge socially, we got an exercise where everybody had to sit in a group and introduce themselves. I suffer from anxiety and get really nervous within these situations so glad I managed to speak about myself to the group.
I was frustrated with my freshers week experience, it was really bad because I had planned to attend several events but had to cancel them as my lecurers had scheduled classes within the entire Freshers week so we efectively had no Freshers experience which is really sad reflecting back and probably had a really negative impact on my enjoyment of University at Napier.
To make up for this I attended the Pitlochry Highland Games by joining a coach trip to the event which I enjoyed. This featured Pipes and Drums with bands performing along with a Tug of War evet, Cycling and Running. The event began with sunshine but quickly that turned to heaviest rain shower I could remember at the time and had to run for cover.
It's been quite challenging for me talking to people in the class, I'm just getting to know everybody and often I felt everyone was in their own little groups, I've defiitely grown up as a person since attending University.
When I made this video I was really looking forward to the course, it seemed really practical hands on course and there were different modules for each subject so I was involved with a creative project, we experienced a TV Research module and a Presentation module where you have a go at
being in front of the camera, doing a bit of presenting work.
Something else I became involved with was an Edinburgh YouTube Gathering organised by Nerdfighters and also YouTube itself.
This was the first in a series of vlogs I had created in years! This is one of the last vlogs I recorded using my Hi8 camcorder which unfortunately experienced a faulty and it wasn't long after this video that I was forced to stop using it.

I regularly stayed on the farm within the cottages which are located just a few miles out of the town centre. It was the perfect autumn short break and something I always enjoyed was the peace and quiet and scenery as well as a variety of animals such as Horses, Sheep and Cattle not to mention a sheep dog called Ben who was particuarly fond of Animal Biscuits!
The cottage had a open fire and coal shed which my family loved to work every night especially as it was so cold! No doubt we will return perhaps with our own family in the future. I used to enjoy making a few videos while staying here, really just experimenting and have fond memories of this place as a child.
I was massively into diecast cars and remember having my Matchbox Motorcity playset spread across the living room floor, enjoying movie nights, roast dinners and floating my Action Man speed boat down the river next to the cottages. Me and my sister used to venture out into the hills and enjoyed seeing the animals, it was an exciting but terrifying experience climbing the hills not knowing whether a cow was going to greet you when you reached the top!
We were lucky on one occasion to pass through the Farm where a large herd of sheep were being herded, Dad got his car stuck in mud after taking a wrong turn and I even got to hold my first lamb! Happy memories and will treasure them.

This week has been a very productive one where I'm now getting into the thick of things within the course currently working on productions at the moment. We are working on a pilot magazine TV show where we are producing a budget, production schedule and script for the production as part of our coursework.
We were given the opportunity to visit STV Studios in Glasgow at Pacific Quay nearby BBC Scotland Studios where we were shown around their facilities getting to view the Post Production studios and large visual gallery. We were lucky to be able to watch a segment from a show called The Hour being filed before it was broadcast on Scottish Television.
Something that I found interesting was that the show was filmed within the studio using mostly remotely controlled cameras where only one out of three cameras was operated by a camera operator. I was impressed by the TV presenters as well who managed to say their lines without errors for ten minutes straight, no easy task. Getting there involved a trip by bus from St Andrews Bus Station in Edinburgh to Glasgow Buchanan Street then we took the Glasgow underground train to Exhibition Centre the a short walk to the studios.
My experience of the TV course has been a mixed one so far, I have felt left out often finding it hard to make friends so feeling a bit down at the moment. I am also finding the workload to be very challenging where balancing different projects tricky with many deadlines. I often find that I take work too seriously especially my coursework which can be a negative trait instead of being more laid back and enjoying the work more.
Something else we're working on is a module called presenting where we get to be in front of the camera, something that is definitely out of my comfort zone but fun to try. At Napier they have a multi camera studio where we produced a pilot TV show where we took turns to speak on camera with members of our class sitting in the TV gallery while another group presented within the studio using lapel mics and auto cues. I found it challenging but it was fun and wish I could have another go many years later where I've become more confident and dress sense has improved!
We also produced a short presentation piece to camera on location where I decided to create my own as a news style piece where I spoke on camera while the camera operator followed my movements then I carried out a single interview on camera as part of the video package piece.
We're also working on our TV Research module where we have to pitch in front of our lecturers six ideas for a Television programme which target particular TV timeslot for example six o'clock news on BBC One. We needed to come up with a demographic and target audience.
Aside from this I've been reading books from Napier University's library at Merchiston ad planning, scheduling other productions for our coursework submissions.

Unfortunately for this week's entry my Hi8 camcorder has finally given up and stopped functioning so I have been forced to record an audio only version this week letting you know what I'm up to.
Week two at University has been really busy. Last week I spoke to you about my induction week which was basically an introduction to the course and getting to meet everybody who is in my class. This week was basically the first full on week with lots of briefs and guides on what kind of assessments we're going to get. We've got three modules, one per trimester so three in a year.
One I was working on was called Film Project 1 where my class was split into groups of about five where we were to produce a programme between twelve and fifteen minutes in length. We decided on producing a magazine show where we began researching well known TV shows such as the One Show, the Hour to generate ideas and by week eleven we came up with a finished programme.
For our programme we decided to feature two presenters including interviews with a number of guests combined with video packages pieced together on particular subjects then include nice graphic elements and titles to give the production a more professional finish.
The second module we were involved with, a research module involved us having to pitch an idea for a programme. We had to produce a treatmet proposal and outline of a programme. One exciting opportunity I managed to experience was visiting BBC Scotland Pacific QuayStudios in Glasgow to get to go behind the scenes on one of the programmes.
Our third first module was a presentation module where it was all about getting in front of the camera and improving our skills in talking and connecting with the audience. We experienced a fun exercise where we all did a piece to camera and tried to do in the form of a news report. I found this very challening and wasn't feeling confident at the time.
In addition to the above I've been spending time in the library and also been involved with a camera exercise where we were practising skills including pull focusing.

I first got interested in being a video creator back in Portobello High School where I'd taken media studies and fell in love with whole filmmaking process. I was fortunate to get involved with events such as Edinburgh's Festivals including the Film Festival which sparked my interest even more. I joined Scotland's oldest cine society, Edinburgh Cine and Video Society and got involved with a large number of video projects filming across Scotland getting the chance to screen them at weekly club nights.
At the same time I undertook a film, tv and video course at college and also was gifted a Hi8 camcorder by a member of ECVS. I remember the summer of 2007 being action packed where I filmed as many events as I could. I setup my first YouTube channel in 2007 though it's been through some changes throughout the years and feel as passionate as I did back when I started making stuff!
Highlights over the years include working with the RNLI in Dunbar, filming Edinburgh's Festival Cavalcade and setting up my own self employed business to name just a few. One of the most enjoyable aspects of being a filmmaker is meeting so many amazing people from different backgrounds, so much variety which means there is always something unique around every corner.
Edinburgh Castle is a famous fortress which can be observed from most locations within different parts of the City of Edinburgh. It sits within the centre of Scotland's capital city and is a major tourist attraction managed by Historic Scotland.
It is known to have been occupied by humans as far back as the Iron Age in the second century after death. A Royal has been known to reside there since the reign of David First from the 12th century. From the 17th century it was primarily used as a military barracks.
Edinburgh Castle has been involved in several conficts in Scotland's history including the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century to the Jacobite rising of 1745. It has also gained a reputation of having experienced the highest number of sieges in it's 1100 year history.
It's also widely known as being the backdrop to the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo during the annual Edinburgh Festival. Everyday at one oclock a gun is fired which is a time signal. This was established in 1861 as a time signal for ships in the harbour of Leith and the Firth of Forth.
If you are lucky enough to visit the 7th floor you'll find yourself on top of the rooftop terrace which provides incredible panoramic views. This particular spot is special as it's right in the middle of the Old Town where you will be able to see the New Town, the Braid Hills and the Firth of Forth.
If you are interested in visiting any of these tourist attractions you can find out more information here.

Scottish Parliament Broadcasting Unit Holyrood Highlights [Behind the Scenes Video]
This week I was on a work placement with the Scottish Parliament's Broadcasting department which gave me an insight into what is involved in producing a programme for Broadcast. I went behind the scenes to find out more.
In Spring, 2009 I had to source a work placement to complete a module for my HND Film & Television Production course which I completed at Jewel & Esk College in Edinburgh, Scotland and Eskbank between 2007 and 2009. I initially emailed local production companies, offering a variety of skills but really offering my help for three days in an attempt to gain a placement for my placements module to gain work experience.
Within this video we meet Douglas Carter, Holyrood Highlights Camera Operator and Editor getting to view where the camera equipment is stored and we get to view an interview with local MP, Michael Matheson, SNP. We also get to meet Andrew Johnston, Holyrood Highlights, Producer/Presenter and Michael Matheson who at the time was deputy convener of the European and external relations committee.
During the work placement I got to view the main Parliament chamber and shown how an autocue is operated. I was lucky to meet with BBC's Alan Meldrum who provided me with a great insight into the technicalities of how it all works. Along with the team, I observed an interview wth SNP Andrew Welsh who gave a gloomy look on the economic status for the upcoming years.
I was able to view an interview with Jeremy Purvis who was a local democrat member of the Scottish Parliament. As part of Holyrood Highlights video packages are recorded which are then edited together with the interviews recorded and with footage recorded from the main chamber to present an update on the latest main news topics being discussed within politics.
