Creating a Positive Environment for Rescued Animals With Molly Goldston
Today’s Pet Game Changer is Molly Goldston, founder of Saving Grace, a non-profit organization in North Carolina that rescues dogs on euthanasia lists across the state and pulls out all the stops to get them ready for adoption.
Molly began working in animal sheltering right out of college, and found a huge need for rescue services in her own backyard and throughout her county and state; many of the shelters in NC, especially in rural areas, can’t provide veterinary or adoption services.
Saving Grace rescues, rehabs, and rehomes about 4,000 dogs a year, and depends on volunteers, fosters, and individual donations to save pets from euthanasia and prepare them for adoption.

Dr. Becker and Bill Bookout Talk About Pet Health Supplements
Pet parents are learning more every day about the potential benefits of nutritional and issue-targeted dietary supplements for their own health and that of family members, including the four-legged kind. As president and founding member of the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC), Bill Bookout observed a decade ago:
“There aren’t any magic bullets out there, but I think supplements are becoming more and more recognized and substantiated as a valuable component of a comprehensive care program where we either try to maintain general health and wellness, or manage health as a result of the aging process or some health challenge.”
Consumers are becoming increasingly interested in dietary supplements not only for themselves, but also for furry family members.
Supplement categories include those for joint health, GI tract support, heart, liver, and kidney support, and skin and coat health.
High quality dietary supplements can be extremely beneficial to your pet’s health and longevity; work with a knowledgeable veterinarian to determine what types of supplements are best for your dog or cat.

How Functional Medicine With Love and Commitment Can Lead to Better Outcomes in Pets
This 14-year-old Austy girl started falling and having trouble pooping and getting back up, as what can happen with older pets. But when Austy's owner-veterinarian made these three changes to her care, she not only lived almost two more years, but, miraculously, started going for jogs again.
Today’s Pet Game Changer is Dr. Katie Kangas, who runs Integrative Veterinary Care in San Diego, CA, a practice focused on prevention and natural healing and wellness.
Like so many veterinary Game Changers, Dr. Katie’s inspiration to branch out into the fields of holistic and functional medicine was her very own 14-year-old dog.
Dr. Katie started her integrative journey over 15 years ago, and today she runs a busy practice helping to maintain and restore health in her patients, and often inspiring their owners to take care of their health as well.

What to Look for When Shopping for Shampoo for Pets
Your pet's body stores toxins and when too many build up, vital organ systems can become damaged, and tumors and cysts can begin to grow. Don't let that happen to your pet - take these 10 steps now to help their body rid itself of accumulated toxins before it becomes overwhelmed.
Every pet is exposed to toxins because these chemicals are ubiquitous in commercial pet food, homes, yards, the general environment, and even the veterinary office.
If your animal companion's accumulation of toxins overwhelms her body's natural detoxification processes, it can compromise her health.
There are several things you can do to minimize your pet's exposure to toxins and support the organs of her body responsible for detoxification.
For many pets, a regular detoxification protocol can also be very beneficial.

Groundbreaking Laser Procedure Improves Breathing in Flat-Faced Dogs
Done on an outpatient basis, this minimally invasive procedure is dramatically improving the health and quality of life of French Bulldogs and other brachycephalic pets.
Today I’m Zooming with a veterinarian in Boca Raton, FL, Dr. Boaz Man, who is using a groundbreaking CO2 laser procedure to dramatically improve the health and quality of life of French Bulldogs and other “extreme” flat-faced breeds.
Dr. Man is a general practice veterinarian, not a board certified veterinary surgeon, but he has taken it upon himself to learn the skills and techniques necessary to perform this successful life-saving surgery on dogs with a compromised quality of life who struggle simply to breathe.
The CO2 laser procedure is done on an outpatient basis, is minimally invasive, produces minimal bleeding, and no stitches or “cone of shame” are required; the laser is used to open the nostrils and remove excess tissue from the nose and windpipe
Dr. Man is hopeful that many more veterinarians will learn the technique, because French Bulldogs and other brachycephalic breeds are hugely popular in the U.S., and many of them are in very poor health.
Ultimately, the onus is on breeders and owners/prospective owners of flat-faced dogs to act responsibly and ethically to dramatically improve breeding practices with the goal of returning these deserving dogs to good health and a good quality of life.

Dr. Becker Discusses Basal Cell Tumors
A basal cell tumor is a slow-growing overgrowth of cells on the outer layer of the skin. They can be either benign or malignant, but most are benign. In dogs, basal tumors are usually found on the head, neck, or forelimbs. In cats, they can develop almost anywhere on the body.
These tumors are typically firm bumps that may be attached by a stalk. They can range in size from less than 1 centimeter to up to 10 centimeters in diameter. Malignant tumors are most often seen in older cats, and appear flatter than benign tumors.
A confirming diagnosis is made through microscopic examination of tissue through either a fine-needle aspiration or a biopsy. The standard treatment for both benign and malignant basal cell tumors is surgery, which provides a complete cure if the entire tumor can be excised.

Reasons Cats Throw Up and Ways to Treat a Vomiting Cat
Chronic vomiting in cats is unfortunately so common these days that many pet parents and even some veterinarians don’t consider it a big deal. However, the reality is that regular vomiting is a sign something’s wrong, since your kitty’s cousins in the wild don't routinely vomit. It’s also important to realize that frequent vomiting is stressful and physically taxing.
A common cause of frequent vomiting in cats is a poor-quality diet and food intolerances, both of which must be addressed to resolve the issue.
Eating too fast and too much time between meals can cause vomiting, as can hairballs and constipation.
Enzyme deficiencies, toxin ingestion, and an underlying medical condition can also play a role.
Helping a chronically vomiting cat requires identifying the cause(s), addressing any underlying medical issues, and making appropriate dietary/lifestyle changes.

Why I Don’t Recommend Most Prescription Renal Diets for Cats
Sadly, estimates are that over half of kitty companions 10 years and older suffer from chronic kidney disease (CKD), which is also referred to as chronic renal disease or chronic renal failure. There are many causes of CKD in cats, but one of the most common and preventable influences is a dry food diet.
The prescription “renal diets” recommended by many veterinarians are also dry processed diets that provide very little moisture and poor-quality protein to kitty patients in desperate need of food loaded with moisture and animal protein.
Ideally, CKD cats should be fed excellent-quality, fresh food diets formulated specifically to address renal disease.
There are also natural supplements that can be very beneficial for cats with CKD.

Fostering Teamwork Between Clients and Veterinarians With Dr. Deirdre Farr
Dr. Deirdre Farr has spent decades improving animals’ lives using alternative and complementary care.
After experiencing burnout and frustration at the tool given to her by conventional veterinary care, Dr. Farr was about to change career paths, until she discovered acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine and chiropractic care.
Initially, Dr. Farr’s colleagues didn’t believe in the alternative tools she was offering, but when she was able to help their “dead-end cases,” their minds changed.
When Dr. Farr works with a patient, she sees them as a whole being — one that’s not only physical but also emotional and spiritual in nature; this is key to supporting their wellness.
Dr. Farr retired from veterinary care in 2019, but her passion to help animals brought her back into practice; she can now be found working one afternoon a week at Iowa Veterinary Wellness Center in Des Moines.

Frozen Coconut Oil and Berry Treats
Bursting with antioxidant phenolics that help rein in damaging free radicals, these tasty bite-sized gems are ideal for feeding to your dog or cat. One study even showed how their extract led to significant cognitive improvement in dogs. But the devil is in the details - moderation is key.
Adding fresh foods like blueberries to your pet’s diet is a simple way to boost their intake of beneficial phytochemicals, including anthocyanidins, and fiber.
In sled dogs, supplementing with blueberries led to significantly elevated antioxidant status post-exercise.
A polyphenol-rich extract from a blueberry blend led to significant cognitive improvements in dogs, suggesting it could benefit working memory.
Blueberries can account for up to 83% of wolves’ diets in July, among wolves living in Minnesota’s boreal forests.
Large dogs can enjoy a small handful of berries daily; for smaller dogs or cats, two to four berries for each 10 poun.

Dr. Becker Explains What to Look for in a Sunscreen for Pets
As temperatures rise in summer, pets can become easily overheated outdoors or in vehicles.
Taking precautions — and watching out for signs of heat stress — will ensure your dog stays safe and cool all summer long.
When taking walks, stick to early morning or evening to take advantage of cooler times of day.
Avoid hot pavement, which can burn your pet’s paws and lead to overheating; stick to walks on cool grass instead.
When it’s warm outside, be sure your dog always has access to shade and cool water.
Watch out for signs of overheating, such as excessive panting and drooling, elevated body temperature, glazed eyes and weakness.

Dr. Becker Discusses Bones and Your Dog (Part 1)
At this age, your puppy will start losing baby teeth and grownup teeth will begin to erupt. In the process, no surface is off limits for his robust teething. He'll chew your furniture, shoes and anything else in his reach. Here's what you need to know about your puppy's teething.
Baby, or deciduous, teeth typically come in at 3 weeks of age in puppies.
By 3.5 months, your puppy will start to lose some baby teeth and adult teeth will begin to erupt; the entire teething process is typically complete at around 6 months of age, and longer for some puppies.
During this time, and often lasting through the first year of life, your puppy may try to chew on anything he can get his mouth on, including your shoes and furniture; take care to remove objects that your puppy could choke on and provide plenty of safe options for chewing.
Try putting your puppy’s silicone chew toy in the freezer; the cold can help relieve teething pain. You can also offer frozen treats, such as blueberries or small pieces of carrots.
During teething, get your pup used to having his mouth gently touched as part of his daily routine; it’s the first step to regular brushing.

Giving Your Dog a Foot Bath
Both cats and dogs groom themselves, but kitties are much more committed to the process than dogs are, so if you notice your dog constantly licking his paws, it’s important to investigate. Chances are, something is making him itchy and uncomfortable.
Dogs who obsessively lick their paws are often itchy and miserable due to environmental allergies.
Especially during the spring and summer months, your dog’s paws are collecting allergens and chemicals in the environment 24/7.
Up to 50% of seasonal paw licking and chewing can be relieved by removing the irritants with a simple foot soak each time your dog comes in from outdoors, or once daily at a minimum.
Two other common disorders that can make your dog’s paws itchy are a yeast infection and mange.
