Dr. Becker on Brown Recluse & Black Widow Spider Bites
Without the antivenom, this bite is fatal for most cats and many dogs. They'll need hospitalization, and even then the prognosis may be unclear for days. This 'cousin' inflicts bites that are just as disturbing, but with different symptoms. What to have on hand for both.
A venomous black widow spider bite triggers muscle spasms and paralysis. Other symptoms can include severe pain, difficulty breathing, and loss of coordination.
Your pet can be bitten by a black widow indoors or outside. Younger and older pets are at increased risk of fatal complications from a black widow bite. A dog or cat bitten by a black widow spider must be treated with antivenom, supportive therapy, and other medications as necessary.
A brown recluse spider bite is necrotizing – meaning the bite wound will ulcerate and cause destruction of surrounding soft tissue. Some pets show no symptoms from the bite of a brown recluse, but when symptoms are present, they often include several hours of intense pain at the site of the bite.
Routine wound care is given for brown recluse bites unless the pet is very ill, in which case he must be hospitalized to receive proper care.

Thyroid Disease in Pets with Dr. Jean Dodds (Part 1 of 2)
Dr. Becker chats with Dr. Jean Dodds, the leading authority on thyroid disease in pets. Dr. Dodds discusses the best tests for an accurate diagnosis of hypothyroidism in dogs, and why some cats go from hyper to hypo.
Dr. Jean Dodds is a world-renowned expert on thyroid disease in pets, and today she discusses the importance of using the right tests to accurately assess thyroid function in dogs and cats.
Canine hypothyroidism typically goes undiagnosed until it is far progressed and 70% or more of the thyroid gland has been compromised. Dr. Dodds recommends a complete thyroid antibody profile versus the total T4 test.
Hyperthyroid cats often become hypothyroid within a matter of months after medical intervention that inactivates their thyroid gland. These cats do quite well with added thyroid hormones that return them to a state of metabolic balance.

Dr. Becker Talks About Encephalitis
Encephalitis means inflammation of the brain, and it may be accompanied by inflammation of the spinal cord (myelitis) and/or inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord (meningitis).
The disease is either the result of an infectious agent or it is termed “idiopathic,” meaning the cause is not known. However, idiopathic encephalitis often has an underlying immune-mediated cause.
Symptoms of encephalitis depend on the area of the brain that is affected, and usually come on suddenly and progress quickly. A confirming diagnosis often involves a spinal tap.
Holistic veterinarians typically use therapies such as homotoxicology, ozone therapy, and herbal protocols in conjunction with traditional treatments for encephalitis patients.

Dr. Becker Discusses What to Look for in a Joint Support Supplement
While certain breeds (including America's most popular breed) may be more susceptible to developing cruciate ligament rupture, the reality is, this painful and debilitating condition can occur in any dog, no matter the breed, size or age. Now there's a way to know your dog's risk with 98% accuracy.
A genetic test is now available that screens for risk of cruciate ligament rupture in Labrador retrievers.
For about $250, the genetic screening evaluates multiple gene variations that, in combination, predict a dog’s genetic risk of cruciate ligament rupture with 98% accuracy.
Knowing in advance if your dog is at high risk — before cruciate ligament rupture — allows for personalized interventions that could help reduce the risk and even prevent the condition from occurring.
In most cases, ligament rupture occurs due to gradual deterioration that took place over a period of months or years.
In my experience, under-exercised dogs that eat poor-quality ultraprocessed diets, or those that eat homemade prey model diets lacking in important nutrients are at increased risk of CCL injury.

Dr. Becker Discusses Ubiquinol
You've noticed your older dog doesn't seem to hear as well as he used to. With humans, hearing impairment can be one of the biggest predictors of dementia. Is that so with dogs, too? Know the five classic signs of cognitive decline in dogs and five ways to help your pup stay mentally sharp.
Recent research by North Carolina State University has established that as is the case with human seniors, there appears to be a connection between hearing loss and dementia in senior and geriatric dogs.
The study of 39 dogs, median age of 13 years, showed that a decreased ability to hear is closely associated with the onset of canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD).
Of the dogs with normal hearing, 61% had no symptoms of CCD, while half of dogs with moderate hearing loss had moderate CCD symptoms, and of the dogs with severe hearing loss, none were CCD symptom-free, 38% showed moderate signs, and 50% had severe levels of CCD.
There are many things you can do to help preserve your aging dog’s wellbeing and help her stay mentally sharp, including offering the right diet and supplements, encouraging regular exercise, skipping unnecessary vaccines, and scheduling twice-yearly wellness exams.

Dr. Becker Discusses Reverse Sneezing
Once you witness your dog reverse sneezing, it’s a sight — and sound — you’re unlikely to forget. Fortunately, this phenomenon, which is caused by a spasm of the throat and soft palate, is not usually cause for alarm.
Reverse sneezing in dogs is caused by a spasm of the throat and soft palate, and is not usually cause for alarm.
Reverse sneezing occurs when your dog forcefully and quickly inhales air instead of pushing it out, as occurs during a normal sneeze.
This “backward sneeze” typically leads to a loud snorting or honking sound, and your dog may freeze in place with her front legs apart, neck extended and head back.
Household products like air fresheners, cleaning products and fragrances, as well as pollen, dust or powder can trigger a reverse sneeze.
Your dog’s soft palate may also be irritated by overexcitement, pulling on a leash or sudden changes in temperature.
You typically don’t have to do anything during a reverse sneezing episode, but since your dog may be frightened, you may want to speak to her calmly to reassure her that she’s OK.

What to Look for When Shopping for Shampoo for Pets
Around this time of year, many dogs start experiencing itchy or flaky skin issues, but there isn't just one potential cause. These five common skin conditions can make your dog uncomfortable anytime during the year, and even lead to other alarming signs.
Skin is one of the largest and most extensive organ systems of the body, which is why it’s no surprise that canine family members, like their humans, can develop many different types of skin conditions.
Five of the most common skin disorders in dogs include hot spots, hair loss, atopic dermatitis, flaky skin and a dull/dry coat, and mange.
If your dog has a skin condition, it’s important to identify what it is and what’s causing it so that it can be successfully resolved.

Tick-Borne Disease in Cats
Bobcat fever, a tick-borne illness formally known as cytauxzoonosis, was diagnosed in a southern Illinois cat. If your cat spends time outdoors in an area where bobcats or ticks are present, be on the lookout for this life-threatening disease, which can prove to be fatal without early treatment.
If you live in an area where bobcats are present, and you have a cat who frequents the outdoors, stay vigilant for a tick-borne disease called cytauxzoonosis, commonly known as bobcat fever
Reports of infection have come from southern Illinois, where at least eight cats were affected in 2018, and one has been reported as of May 2019
At least 16 other states have also reported cases of cytauxzoonosis
Fever, lethargy and loss of appetite are among the first signs of bobcat fever
Sadly, cytauxzoonosis is often fatal in cats, although survival is possible, especially if treatment is started early

Every Bit of Time You Give Can Make a Difference
Mary Jo Rulffes, president of the Australian Cattle Dog Rescue Association (ACDRA), was nominated for a Game Changer Award by Nancy V.
A serendipitous meeting during a 2013 shopping trip in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, brought Mary Jo Rulffes together with ACDRA, after she worked with them to rescue a cattle dog in need.
Not only were they able to rescue the dog, but Rulffes ended up adopting her — and soon became president of ACDRA.
ACDRA is run completely by volunteers and is 100% foster home based; since 2019, they've pulled about 850 dogs from Georgia alone.
Rulffes continues to be inspired by those she's met along the way; her favorite part about working with ACDRA, aside from the dogs, is "the rescue family in the rescue".

Dr. Becker Discusses Struvite Stones and Crystals
Struvite stones are bladder stones that develop in both dogs and cats. The condition accounts for over a third of all urinary tract stones in dogs and about half of all urinary stones in cats. The problem is seen most often in female pets at middle age
Struvite stones can be caused by alkaline urine, steroid therapy, abnormal retention of urine, a urinary tract infection, or another disorder of the urinary tract. Common symptoms include frequent urination, straining to urinate, urinating in inappropriate places, cloudy or bloody urine, and increased thirst
Diagnosis of a stone will include manual palpation of the abdomen, urinalysis, a urine culture and sensitivity test, x-rays and ultrasounds
If urine flow is completely blocked, this is a medical emergency and you should have your pet seen by a veterinarian right away. Otherwise, the situation can often be managed with medication and dietary adjustments
To reduce urine pH — which is the goal in most struvite situations — you must feed your pet a low-carb, grain-free, potato-free, species-appropriate diet. When dogs and cats who are designed to eat meat are fed a grain-based diet or a starch-rich diet, the starch alkalizes urine pH, which can lead to the development of struvite crystals and stones. Sometimes, surgery is required to remove stones in the urethra, ureters or bladder

Discovering the Importance of Nutrition With Dr. Conor Brady
Today I'm talking with Dr. Conor Brady, author of the fantastic new book, Feeding Dogs: The Science Behind The Dry Versus Raw Debate. The following article covers many of the highlights of our discussion, but I encourage you to watch the full video as well.
Dr. Conor Brady is the author of a groundbreaking new book titled “Feeding Dogs: The Science Behind the Dry Versus Raw Debate.
Dr. Brady’s passion for food-as-medicine arose from the plight of his 7-year-old dog with debilitating hip dysplasia.
Dr. Brady was improving the health of his own dog and the guide dogs he trained with raw diets, but the vets and others he worked with were uninterested — so he struck out on his own to make the case for feeding raw.
His incredibly well-researched and footnoted book is the result of a decade of work; it makes complex topics understandable and digestible for both veterinarians and pet parents.
Of particular benefit is the proof the book provides that ultra-processed pet food is tied directly to the epidemic of diseases in today’s canine companions.

The Incredible Technique That Helps Racehorses Heal
Dr. Lillian Bonner, an integrative veterinarian in Christchurch, New Zealand, is doing incredible work to help horses heal emotionally, physically and energetically.
Nominated for a Game Changer Award by Karen, Bonner works with sport horses that are super elite athletes.
Bonner describes herself as a perfectionist, adding that initially she was practicing high-level sports medicine but the conventional treatments available just weren’t enough.
She added reiki to her practice and saw “amazing results”; she also uses acupuncture, osteopathy, chiropractic and rehabilitation techniques.
Horses are highly intuitive, sensitive, emotional creatures, so adding energetics into their healing makes perfect sense — and Bonner can tell the horses are appreciative of her efforts to help them stay well.

Dr. Becker Shares Her Updated List of Best and Worst Pet Foods
If you want your pet to be healthy, happy, energetic and live a long life, I urge you to start demanding food without these ingredients. Also, consider being like 43% of pet owners, and pay more for food that doesn't contain this vile substance.
In the U.S., almost all pet owners (95%) consider their pets to be part of the family.
Pet owners are increasingly looking for healthier, natural pet food and treat options, and are even moving beyond expectations of “high-quality” food towards “humanized” food.
About 43% of pet owners indicated they’d pay more for non-GMO (genetically modified organisms) pet products.

Frozen Banana Basil Towers for Dogs
Bananas have been a part of people's diet for thousands of years. In fact, they are one of the most popular and highly cultivated fruits worldwide, outranking apples and oranges in terms of sales, with around 100 billion consumed globally annually.1 Bananas have become a staple in many cultures because they're filling, versatile and affordable. They're also a good source of various nutrients and bioactive compounds that may benefit not only you but your furry family members too.
One of the most notable benefits of bananas is that they're rich in antioxidants, including phenolics, carotenoids, biogenic amines and phytosterols.
Green bananas contain resistant starches and pectins, making them a good whole food source of prebiotics.

Dr. Becker Discusses Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia (IMT)
Immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (IMT) is a condition in which the body’s immune system destroys its own blood platelets. IMT is primarily a disease of middle-aged dogs, and while any breed can be affected, Poodles, Cocker Spaniels, and Old English Sheepdogs are predisposed. The disease is quite rare in cats.
Blood platelets are very important types of blood cells. They not only help blood to clot and seal holes in leaking blood vessels, they also produce biochemicals that make permanent repairs to those holes.
The exact cause of IMT is unknown, however, the condition can be triggered or exacerbated by vaccines, especially bacterins (such as lepto and Lyme vaccines) and adjuvanted killed vaccines (such as the rabies vaccine).
Most of the symptoms of IMT are bleeding-related, with spontaneous bruising being one of the most common.
Immune-mediated thrombocytopenia is a complex condition that varies from patient to patient, so treatment must be individualized. Most pets with IMT can live normally if they respond well to medical treatment.

Dr. Becker Discusses What to Look for in a Pet Bed
Since “fleas” is one of the most frequently searched terms on this site, and since the 2023 pesky pest season will be here before we know it, I decided to tackle this ticklish topic a little early this year.
Flea season will be here before we know it, and if you live in a flea-endemic area, it can be a challenge to keep your pet pest-free.
Fleas have a 4-stage life cycle; adult fleas are what you’ll find on your dog or cat, but believe it or not, they represent only 5% of the fleas in your environment.
Signs of fleas on your pet include scratching, patchy hair loss, and physical evidence of fleas or flea dirt.
A flea comb is your best defense against adult fleas on your pet; there are several steps you’ll also need to take around your home to eliminate pests in the other 3 life stages.
Nontoxic repellents can be an effective deterrent to fleas on your pet and in your environment.

What Is Normal Poop for Your Pet
Monitoring your pup's bathroom activity is the easiest way to know if she's feeling under the weather. If you see any of these 7 specific types of stool, it might be something mild or something serious enough to warrant a visit to your vet.
An excellent way to stay on top of your dog’s health is to monitor what comes out of him, otherwise known as feces/stool/poop. It’s important to know your dog’s “normal” when it comes to poop.
The most obvious symptom of a health problem in dogs is diarrhea, which has several characteristics that vary depending on the cause.
There are several potential causes of diarrhea in dogs, ranging from a change in diet to cancer.
It’s time to call the veterinarian if the diarrhea doesn’t resolve on its own in a day or so, or if your dog is showing other signs of illness.

The Real Reason Dogs eat poop and How to make them stop
They don't do it because they think it's yummy or to gross you out. But there are a number of reasons why they might do it. Address the root cause, of course. But what you really want to know is how to stop this bizarre behavior. And there's really only one answer for that.
Dogs don’t engage in coprophagia (poop-eating) because they like the taste or to gross out their owners.
Many dogs sample poop in an effort to correct a digestive insufficiency or microbiome imbalance.
Dogs fed a biologically inappropriate dry diet are more often poop eaters than dogs fed a nutritionally balanced, fresh and human-grade diet.
Sometimes coprophagia is behavioral in nature, especially among puppy mill dogs and dogs living in kennel situations.
If your dog is a poop eater, one of the most effective ways to curb the behavior is to simply clean up after him as soon as he eliminates, and supervise him in situations where he could encounter the feces of other pets or wildlife.
