When Lulu Pulls Her Tulip Cart, It is a Ride Fit for a Queen!
This video was recorded on April 6, 2021 and originally published November 14, 2021. The tulip cart has always been one of my favorites in Laura's menagerie of horse drawn vehicles. It was a sight to behold when Laura’s Percheron team Bonnie and Ben were hitched to it (reminded me of Ben Hur) and today it was exciting to help Laura put the shafts back on it so Lulu could have her turn to be a chariot horse! The scarlet color of the cart with beige upholstery and natural wood, beautifully embellished with fancy pin striping is the perfect go together with Lulu - because she is a sports car kind of horse! It was a "stay on the ranch" jaunt this time because Lulu was a little gimpy from a stone bruise, so this short test drive was in the arena where the ground is soft.
I tried to reformat this video because I never liked the black border on top and bottom- and thought I had fixed it- so uploaded this “new” version but turns out it is no different than the first video I published. After fiddling with it again, I found that if I I cropped the black borders it took too much off the sides too. So, although this is a duplicate of the one I already published, I don't mind re-publishing since it’s 1 of only two videos I have of Lulu pulling this magnificent cart.
Donkeys Doing What Donkeys Do
October 22, 2023. I heard a lot of wild braying from inside the house and saw the donks running around so hurried out as fast as I could to catch the action but didn't quite make it in time. I arrived to see Rose taking a roll in the dust after their play and the rest of the group were standing around just looking at me. Then I spied some scuffling behind a cottonwood at the back of the property and realized that Buddy and BooBoo were still at it. They are best buds and don't usually join in when the others are running around like a wild herd of donkeys. Buddy and BooBoo prefer to rough house together and have mock fights, sparring and biting each other on the neck and legs like wild jacks. Finally they simmered down and ambled over with the rest of us. Then we all headed to the front field where they contentedly spend some time nibbling on leaves that have fallen from the fruitless mulberry tree. Rose tries reaching up giraffe style to pluck some leaves. My ASSn9Bunch are a happy herd! 22, 2023.
Bill the Belgian ~ Handsome as Ever!
August 5, 2022. ~ I can't take my eyes off of you Bill! I always loved taking pics of Bill back when Annette had her “Belgian Boys” team and even when she drove him single. He gives 100% effort when he throws his weight into the collar and sometimes he decides he wants to up it to 125% - and that’s when he becomes a prancing machine, like a carousel horse come to life! Bill rides and drives and is truly a gentle giant. Now he's Uncle Bill to "little" Lex, Annette’s young Percheron, and it will be fun to watch Bill help Annette as she continues Lex's training for the up and coming Draft Horse Classic!

Lulu Tries Out Laura’s Metal Training Cart
November 3, 2023. Laura had been on the lookout for a smaller training cart because the only two wheeled cart she has for Lulu is a big show cart. Laura’s ”tulip” cart is oak wood with an upholstered seat and was pulled by her Percheron team, Bonnie and Ben. But after she had to send them on to a new home Lulu inherited it and she looks great pulling it too but it's not practical to use for every day because it is a big big step up to get into the seat and much larger to maneuver around. So this smaller metal training cart is the perfect find and will be easy for a student to climb aboard and not be too intimidating to ride in. This string of video clips shot with my iPhone shows Laura in the arena first so we could fine tune Lulu’s harness traces and hold back straps to fit the different shafts and level the cart. After a few turns in the arena, when everything was adjusted right, we took Lulu for her usual round on the winding trail of Blueberry Lane and on the routine drive up and down the street so we could get the feel of the cart at different gaits. It rides well and with the wide wheel span and heavy metal construction it's sturdy and safe, so it will be perfect for lessons and any other time Laura drives with just one passenger.
