Sleeping Gods & Kings of Chaos
The psalms appear to give contradictory images of God in relation to sleep. Psalm 121 says that Yahweh never sleeps, that he is eternally vigilant in protecting his people from all evil. Psalm 44:24 gives exactly the opposite picture, however. The psalmist calls upon God to wake up and save his people from the wicked who threaten to devour them.
How do we make sense of this? Scholars have varying approaches to deal with this seeming contradiction. The answer lies in the Ancient Near Eastern sleeping deity motif. In this video I will explain what that is, why it matters, and how it emphatically points to the deity of Jesus Christ.

He Who Is & Who Was & Who Is Still to Come | Yahweh in Revelation | Revelation 1:4b
#apocalypse #Yahweh #Trinity
Revelation 1:4 Grace and peace to you from "he who is," and who was, and who is still to come
In this teaching I will go in depth and analyze this famous phrase. Scholars notice how anomalous it is in the Greek. Why did John write it this way? How does it point back to the Septuagint and the Aramaic Targums?
How does this phrase aid in our understanding of the philosophy of God and time?
Does the Greek grammar point to the Trinity?
What is the connection between this verse and the divine council worldview?
We will discuss these questions and more!

To the Seven Churches & the Church Universal | Revelation 1:4a
#revelation #prophecy #church
Revelation 1:4-5a “John, to the seven churches that are in the province of Asia: Grace and peace to you from "he who is," and who was, and who is still to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ - the faithful witness, the firstborn from among the dead, the ruler over the kings of the earth.”
These verses are an ancient epistolary greeting. How do we know this? What are the literary elements that make up an epistolary greeting?
John is writing to the seven churches. How should we interpret these seven? Are they simply literal churches? Or do they represent something more?
We will discuss these questions and more in this installment of our continuing series on the book of Revelation.

Apocalyptic Blessings | Revelation 1:3
#blessings #prophecy #revelation
Revelation 1:3 Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near.
The reason the readers and hearers should keep the words of this prophecy is because the time is near. But what does this mean? Many interpretations have been offered.
Daniel Wallace notes the importance of the definite article. It is “The time”. It signifies the well known period of eschatological consummation.
The OT prophets looked forward to the last days. But Christ’s first coming kicked off the last days. According to Peter the last days have begun. 1 Peter 4:7 “The end of the world is coming soon.” While we don’t know exactly when the end will be, we are to live sober, holy lives in expectation of it.
2 Peter 3:11-12 “Since everything around us is going to be destroyed like this, what holy and godly lives you should live, looking forward to the day of God and hurrying it along.” It seems the timing of the end has some relation to the behavior of God’s people.
The eschaton is coming, this world is ending, and the final reward belongs only to those who are obedient.

Apocalypse Now | Revelation 1:1-2
#prophecy #revelation #apocalypse
In this video we will be discussing Revelation 1:1-2. We will address the following questions and themes:
What is the meaning of the word “apocalypse”?
How is the apocalypse applied to Jesus Christ?
Revelation is revealed in symbols, how does this affect our interpretation?
John is told this vision most “shortly come to pass.” This seems straightforward, but is it? Does this phrase prove the preterist interpretation of the book? How does Daniel 2 aid our understanding?
Join us as we begin our verse by verse analysis of the book of Revelation!!

The Old Testament, The Prophets & The Book of Revelation | Introduction Part IV
In our fourth introductory session on the book of Revelation we will be examining how John uses the Old Testament.
Revelation is famous for its extensive Old Testament quotations and allusions. John goes so far as to use irregular Greek grammar to make sure we don’t miss the Old Testament passage he has in mind.
Scholars also point out the Jewishness of the book. It is so obviously Jewish, especially from chapters 4 and on, that one scholar has suggested that 4-11 was written by John the Baptist. And a few have suggested that the book was originally written in either Hebrew or Aramaic.
There is debate as to whether Daniel or Ezekiel influenced John the most.
Other scholars emphasize, variously, Isaiah, Exodus, and Zechariah as being models for Revelation.
In addition to John’s direct use of the OT, he also develops important OT themes throughout Revelation, including holy war and the day of Yahweh.
We will discuss these issues and more!

Identifying the literary genre of the book of Revelation has garnered much scholarly debate.
In this video we will discuss the various literary options that been offered by scholars in their quest to identify the genre of the Apocalypse. Some discussion points include:
What is apocalyptic literature?
Is apocalyptic prophecy different than general prophecy?
Does the book of Revelation have an epistolary framework? If so, how does that impact our understanding?
How does the book of Revelation identify itself?

Prayer - The Heavy Artillery | Spiritual Warfare Part XII
#spiritualwarfare #armorofgod #prayer
Prayer is the seventh item, the completion of the armor. Prayer is at the heart of spiritual warfare.
In the OT and in later Jewish literature, prayer is depicted as a battle. Prayer is the weapon God has given believers to pull down strongholds and destroy the schemes of the devil.
As we wrestle against spiritual powers of darkness we need to be reliant upon the ultimate power, the Holy Spirit. Chuck Missler called prayer “action at a distance” and said it was the believers “heavy artillery.”
Nuclear wars cannot be won with rifles. Likewise, satanic wars cannot be won by human energy.

The Shield of Faith | Spiritual Warfare Part IX
#spiritualwarfare #armorofgod #faith
Ephesians 6:16 V16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.
In this study we examine in detail the shield of faith. Faith extinguishes the enemy’s flaming arrows.
We need to expect attacks and counterattacks. The devil is wily and his schemes and attacks are varied and broad.
The Athenian general Thucydides stated in his writings that the leather coating of each shield was soaked in water before the battle. This neutralized the flaming arrows of the enemy. In the same way, we need to soak our faith in the living water. Paul clearly says that our shield, faith, is capable of extinguishing all the flaming arrows.
1 Peter 5:8-9 Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith.
Join us as we examine this crucial piece of spiritual armor!
