Celebration Amidst Turmoil
Celebration Amidst Turmoil
New Orleans celebrates Mardi Gras – Happy Fat Tuesday!
Have you ever walked Bourbon Street or visited Laffites’ (a 300 year old tavern)?
Meanwhile, Ukraine fights for survival.
Life often brings contradictory extremes together.
You’ve likely experienced that as an Entrepreneur, as a Leader.
It’s necessary to acknowledge the reality of attacks, tragedy, and uncertainty, while celebrating moments of success, joy, and clarity.
For example, on this day in 1873, manufacture of the first “practical” typewrite began. Remington & Sons had bought the patent from Christopher Latham Sholes.
Mr. Sholes had struggled to manufacture his invention since 1868. Remington paid $12,000 – nearly $27,000,000 in today’s dollars – and Mr. Sholes continued to refine the design.
The 1873 design was clunky, but launched the modern era of writing. Mark Twain soon became the first author to submit a typed manuscript for a book.
You likely haven’t used a typewriter recently, BUT you’re still using the QWERTY keyboard layout from 149 years ago.
How might you scale your business by licensing products or intellectual property to other companies?
What products or services could you license as additional solutions for your Customers’ needs?
What Customers, products or services could you gain by buying another company?
We discuss this and more in this Episode of Wolfe’s Watch.
PS: This is also National Dadgum That’s Good Day – what did you experience or see someone else experience today that deserves a “Dadgum That’s Good?”
Episode #170

Do You Stand With Your Team or Accept A Ride?
Do You Stand With Your Team or Accept A Ride?
When the going gets tough some accept a ride to safer ground,
Others will take to the streets.
Having clear values guides options and actions.
One value system will guide a leader into the streets to be with the people he or she serves.
Another set of values will guide a person to catch a ride home for the weekend.
Even if you don’t have clearly articulated values for your business, your action will clearly communicate your actual values.
Recent events have provided clear examples of true leaders stepping up and leading from the front. Putting themselves in harm’s way even when alleged allies offer “a ride” to safer ground for them personally.
We are seeing amazing examples of true leaders standing strong and rallying the people they serve while propagandists mock them from the safety of their comfortable offices thousands of miles away.
From these examples, we discuss 3 clear lessons for you as the leader of your business.
Today’s episode goes to those who lead when progressives say they are not qualified to do so because they don’t have the “proper” education or blood line or approvals from “the right people.” Those that demonstrate what self-governance, independence, and self-determination look like.

From The Baltic Sea to Seattle 🛫🗽
An Entrepreneur from the country of Georgia regaled us with story of starting the second business in his country after USSR’s ban on private businesses had been lifted by Mikhail Gorbachev under Perestroika/glasnost.
Georgia borders the northeastern portion of the Baltic Sea.
Ukraine borders the North/Northwest portion of the Baltic Sea with Russia in between these 2 countries.
I was astonished by his story, while VERY aware of the irony of having a conversation that 10 years before would have not been possible.
He was a successful entrepreneur in the United State, living in Seattle, when we met.
I hosted him to lecture the top engineers, scientists, and executives of the launch systems company I worked for at the time.
Remembering the drive from the airport to the company's campus still gives me goose-bumps because it was the impossible becoming reality: a respected scientist/engineer from the (former) USSR would be sharing how we could be engineers and scientists.
Unthinkable, a few short years before that!
Speaking of sweet irony, on this day in 1870 Senator Hiram R. Revels became the first African American to serve in the United States Congress! Merely 5 years after the civil war.
Sen. Revels, a Republican representing Mississippi, took the Senate seat formerly held by none other than Jefferson Davis. (https://www.britannica.com/biography/Hiram-Rhodes-Revels)
Irony often results from how things play out over time. No doubt that will be true of current events.
As an entrepreneur - a leader - you have an opportunity and duty to be the calm eye in the hurricane of current events.
You can have a massive, positive impact on the world by growing your company - continually expanding opportunities for others in the process.
You'll affect future Hiram R. Revels, and other future leaders that go on to great "firsts." Mostly without even knowing them or how you helped.
For example, if you make products, every manufacturing job supports at least 4 other jobs. (https://www.epi.org/publication/updated-employment-multipliers-for-the-u-s-economy/)
That's positive leverage that helps a lot of families!
As that calm in the storm you'll be able to act on the opportunities for grow that always result from chaos.
Enjoy the moment.
In fact, today is National Chocolate Covered Nuts Day! Celebrate accordingly. With a favorite beverage and some of your favorite people.
Have fun Friday!!
See you on the trail.

This Made Your Custom Wheels Possible
This Made Your Custom Wheels Possible
Custom "Mag" wheels have been popular for cars since the 1970's.
Improving the efficiency of isolating aluminum from mined ore made industrial-level use of the metal possible.
After at least 5,000 years of limited use, mostly jewelry.
Charles Hall, a student working in his parents garage in Oberlin, OH changed all that. In 1886.
In 1888 he founded the company we know
as Alcoa.
On the other side of the Atlantic, a French Chemist named Paul Heroult, developed the same process.
Known as the Heroult-Hall Process, these two gentleman made
many of the products you use today possible.
How do you lead your Team to innovate and improve efficiency.
With inflation here to stay through 2023, improving efficiency continues to be a Key Strategy for not just scaling your business, but for surviving the current economic turbulence.
There are 3 Categories to keep your Team focused on. First they must thoroughly map the processes they are responsible for.
We discuss these and more examples of how this applies to
YOUR BUSINESS in this Episode of Wolfe's Watch.

Just When You Thought The World Was Stepping BACK From Insanity 🛑🌏😡
Just When You Thought The World Was Stepping BACK From Insanity 🛑🌏😡
A wave of "mandate cancellations" has signaled an end to the "2 Weeks To Flatten The Curve" policies. Perhaps even the end of the Crisis that started in 2020.
Now international conflicts are - almost as if on schedule - driving market chaos. AGAIN. Reports scream of Russia invading Ukraine, and China announcing intentions to "eradicate" Taiwan independence.
Financial markets are rocked - oil, gas, other energy-related commodities begin pricing in disruptions and potential shortages.
Supply chain disruptions are happening - again.
Ships are being warned to avoid the Black Sea because a Turkish ship was hit by a missile.
Disruptions in Taiwan could trigger more electronics shortages.
As a business owner...a leader...there are 3 opportunities, which are responsibilities, too.
You have an opportunity to help those directly affected.
Who on your Team, at your Suppliers or amongst your Customers have family in harm's way.
Your example will guide how those around you respond as events continue to unfold.
Create the calm "eye in the storm" for those around you as chaotic events unfold.
How other leaders react will create opportunities for you to help the Community you serve.
"Those who panic get eaten first." - A principle from our SHTF Leadership Series of 2020. As other Leaders react or "panic" you'll have opportunities to serve, to fill the gaps, and to grow your business.
We discuss these in more detail in this Episode of Wolfe's Watch.
