Giacomo Puccini (22 December 1858, Lucca – 29 November 1924, Brussels) was an Italian opera composer. His operas are among the most performed today, among these are La bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly and Turandot. Some of the arias from his operas, such as "O Mio Babbino Caro" by Gianni Schicchi, "Che gelida manina" by La Bohème and "Nessun dorma" by Turandot have become part of popular culture. Described by the Encyclopædia Britannica as "one of the greatest exponents of realistic operas", he is remembered as one of the last great Italian operatic composers. His repertoire is essentially made up of verismo, or the operatic tradition and post-Romantic literary style. While his work is essentially based on the traditional Italian operas of the late 19th century, his music shows some influences from contemporary composers and the Impressionist movement and Igor Stravinsky.
