Staples like rice and curry form the foundation of many meals, often accompanied by a variety of curries made from vegetables, meat (chicken, beef, goat, or fish), and legumes. Dishes such as dal curry (lentil curry), pol sambol (coconut relish), and mallung (herb and vegetable mix) add unique textures and flavors. Street food is also a highlight, with items like kottu roti (stir-fried flatbread mixed with vegetables and meat) and hoppers (a bowl-shaped pancake made from fermented rice flour) being popular choices. Sri Lankan string hoppers (steamed rice noodles) paired with curry is another favorite.
