Sometimes, the moment that changes everything starts with… mice.
In January 2024, construction began on the ground floor of the Hell’s Kitchen brownstone I’d called home for years. It was my first real Manhattan apartment, my first move out of Brooklyn—cozy, rent-stabilized, full of charm, and perfectly imperfect.
But the construction stirred something. First, squeaking and rustling… then we saw it: a mouse, climbing up the refrigerator onto the counter.
Maintenance came. First they said, "What do you want me to do about it?" Then they caulked. I’d never had mice before, so I assumed they had it handled.
By fall, they were back. A whole family this time. They moved in like they were on the lease—scampering across the floor in broad daylight, making eye contact like I was the intruder. They helped themselves to my cat’s food and got very comfortable. One of the babies got caught on a glue trap and my cat also got caught in the trap with it—and I started to be very concerned for my (then) 16-year-old cat's health and wellbeing. I'm fully convinced that Tom and Jerry is a lie—it's only in the cartoons that the cat is the bad guy.
My apartment wasn’t home anymore. It was a battleground. We had to move.
And here’s the real question that came next: with inflation, economic uncertainty, and business pivots, could I still afford Hell’s Kitchen?
I could’ve played it safe. Looked further uptown or maybe at moving back to Brooklyn. Shrunk. Instead, I took a big swing.
I did a ton of research into the neighborhood. With two weeks’ notice, we moved into a luxury building—doorman, amenities, everything... for not much more than I was already paying. I didn’t know how it would shake out financially. But I knew I needed a new environment, a new level, and a new energy. I started every morning feeling incredible because I could wake up and go look out my balcony and see the Hudson River. It was the circumstance shift I needed.
And the wildest thing happened... my business immediately started growing, too. Revenue jumped. Clients said yes faster. Deals closed quicker.
I made one bold decision to change my circumstances—and my circumstances met me with abundance.
In the last two weeks, I’ve written $322,000 in qualified proposals. That’s not every convo. That’s real, aligned, resourced opportunities.
📈 Last week: $166K 📈 This week (and it’s only Wednesday): $155K
Why the spike?
Speaking engagements. I’ve stepped on multiple stages over the past six weeks, and every time, my calendar fills. Not everyone I speak to ends up being qualified. I only write proposals for people I know I can help—and so far, it’s been worth it, even though my time spent on qualifying conversations has gone up considerably. Being booked is a numbers game, and the more visible you are, the better off you are.
High-level referrals. The kind that come from long-standing relationships rooted in results. I so appreciate the transfer of trust when this happens.
But here’s the part I don’t want to gloss over: this didn’t happen by accident. And I didn’t just get lucky—I got ready.
It took nearly ten years to build the capacity for this kind of volume. Not just to generate it, but to hold it. I had to create systems to get proposals out quickly and ensure that my team and I can deliver on this volume of work. I had to build infrastructure to deliver at scale—and with excellence. And I had to do the inner work to believe that even if half of these deals close (or, let's be real, all), I won’t have to panic or turn anyone away.
And we still have capacity, too.
We’re ready. And that’s the difference between a moment—and a movement.
